Are centifolia's worth the garden space

I recieved R. Centifolia (cabbage rose) from hortico last spring as a sub. It was so small I considered planting it in a pot. Then decided to plant out. At 1st it seemed to do well it actually bloomed very well. Then blackspot set in and half the bush was dead by the end of the season. I'm considering removing it to make room for something else. Am I being to impatient. I don;t have any experience with centifolia's. Any imput on centifolia's and there worth would be great.

Really good centifolia with excellent health and long bloom time is Sheiler's Provence.
Majority of centifolias in my experience are not so resistant to BS, much lower resistance then for example gallicas.

I don't think it's fair to judge a whole class on one experience with one rose.
Fantin-latour is one of the best in class and probably several other classes as well,LOL. IMO a must have. If this would have been your first centifolia, there's no doubt you would have thought they were one of the best classes.
Rose de meux and the Burgundian rose are a couple of 'mini' centifolias, I love these also.

Oh yes, the old roses grow and flower beautifully here. Very easy and low maintenance. My favorite rose of all in my garden in fact is the alba Felicite Parmentier. It's a bit early for her flowers this year however. She is leafing out and has buds, but I don't think the flowers will be open until late this month or early next month. I do have past years' flowers of her up on HMF. My gallicas aren't blooming yet, but Jenny Duval is leafed out and has lots of buds. Kraskoje Kawaskole is only partially leafed out. It's a new one for me, in the last couple years or so (own root, Eurodesert via Heirloom), and I don't remember when it started blooming last year. Later than Jenny D. though. Aimable Rouge is from Pickering and has barely started to wake up. My huge damask York and Lancaster always put on a spectacular show. No need to check for buds, when this roses' flowers open the whole garden is enveloped in heady perfume. Who cares if it only blooms once a year, that scent is divine. Madame William Paul is a lovely moss I've had for decades. Reliable bloomer (but only once) in partial shade. Extremely fragrant. Just beginning to flower now. I added another alba this year, Madame Plantier from Pickering and plan on getting more damasks, albas, and gallicas next year, but which ones........ I also want more eglantines, species, and rugosas, but I am running out of space. Ye olde pot ghetto is embarassingly large as it is. Below is the first flower of the year on the moss Rene d'Anjou. I agree with Pamela. In a smaller to moderate sized garden you really want to be selective with roses. They all need to be rewarding. Sometimes I feel guilty about removing a reasonably good rose that I just don't love, but often I can find someone to give it to who will love it. You are not the curator of a collection unless that is what you want to be. Your roses exist to bring you pleasure. Otherwise you would grow azaleas (well, not in your climate). Or vegetables. Obviously late to the party, but am really interested in indoor gardening, especially for people in apartments or other small spaces who don't have sufficient light (~99.9999% of almost any indoor location for veggies). I found this post b/c I was looking for tower garden reviews. I also found one called iGarden and Gardyn. One mentioned earlier, Green Diamond, looked like it was for a farm. I have two reasons for inquiring. One is my own, personal reason: I don't have tons of time, but would really, really, really love to have fresh veggies, including tomatoes - grown indoors. (I live in a condo with no balcony.) This other is because I have a small nonprofit [yes, 501(c)(3)], and one of its missions is to have sustainable buildings and environs - which also includes the ability for people to grow at least some of their own food in their apartments! With regard to the second reason, whatever solution must be energy efficient since one of our goals is to develop sustainable affordable housing - but, as executive director, I would like to also see some sort of program for very low income: many live in food deserts and most have a similar situation to me (apartment, no balcony). The system must be plug and play or close to it. I know a lot of people who work up to three (!) jobs, and still have trouble making ends meet. So many people may not have high income, but they are extremely busy. [Although it might be nice to develop a DYI system and methodology and point some of these people to that, b/c not everyone's working 18 hour days and, of course, some or retired or are otherwise not working FT.] Thanks so much in advance for your advice! Pink Traviata does fantastic at nearby rose park .. that one is a beast in alkaline clay, hardy for the past 10 years. I'm putting MULCH FILM (black plastic) to kill grass for a new garden next year, but it takes 6 months to completely kill the grass, to be ready for next spring. Our cold zone zaps roses so small, it's so easy to fit into the garden. My La Reine is 1 foot by 0.5 foot, lots of blooms. My Barcelona (very hardy) is even smaller, like a mini-rose. The blooms of own-root are small too, but they get big after 4 years, if the soil is made loamy. When I first got William Shakespeare 2000, it was so small, and the bloom was 1 inch. !! Now in its 5th year, the bush is much bigger, and the bloom is at least 4 inch, I put tons of gypsum in its planting hole, which helps with zillion petals & also sulfate of potash for potassium.

I've only been growing two long enough to fully evaluate. Blanchfleur is a beautiful one with better than average health that is definitely worth the space. Chapeau de Napolean is a delightful curiosity, but it is rather spindly and struggly in a no-spray garden.

I agree that in general Centifolias are not as Cast Iron as Gallicas and Damasks but there are some excellent ones. I second Fantin Latour-it is wonderful the Minis...Petite Lisette is another good one. The pure Cents like Reine des Cenfeuilles and Rose des Peintres are definitly more problematic-they are supposed to be sports or cultivars of R. centifolia. Tour de Malakoff is good but huge. It is one I dormant spray on principle but I dont know if it needs it. Blanchefleur is a lovely white Centifolia-but obviously mixed background-that is a good one. I think it is interesting that the Moss sports do not suffer from the same spotty problems as the non mosses. Why dont I have Shailer Provence? People are always saying it is a wonderful rose.

Fantin Latour was a favorite among my once-bloomers in my Ohio garden, and there were also very nice plans in the small antique section at the Columber (OH) Park of Roses, and at the Garden of Legend and Romance in Wooster. So that's sorta three more votes for Fantin Latour!

I'm still working on the idea that R. centifolia itself had problems. For me, that's unquestionable the best centifolia. Very hardy and disease resistant.

Hmmmm..... I think they are, since I grow 10 different centifolias. But everyone's experience will be different, so I can't speak for all. Mine are all very healthy, with the exception of Gros Choux d' Hollande which tends to blackspot. Fantin will get a little blackspot but not until his blooms are long gone. The rest are very healthy for me here and winter-hardy. Maybe they just love really cold winters?

I will give another vote for Shailer's Provence and Fantin Latour. Shailer's Provence just works so well for me. I will also suggest The Bishop (sometimes classified as a Centifolia) but may be better classified as a Hybrid China, and, Banshee which is classified as a Damask, but, grows a lot like my Shailer's Provence.

Thanks everyone for all the great information. I'm very glad to hear so many of you grow Centifolia's successfully.I really don't remember reading much about them on the forum.
There a group i've admired for many years. I have more confidence now and will definetly leave R. Centifolia at least another season. Celeste your pictures are amazing. Thanks for sharing. Fantin-latour is one i've know about for quite a few years and not sure why i've never tried it.

I had the pompon de borgogne, the mini. Cute BUT for many years, the blooms were so tiny, they either dried up and did not open or the spring was too wet and they did not open. And the blooms did not last very long as they were too tiny. Never had good luck with it and it went. Cute as a buttom though.
