The floribunda Rainbow Sorbet has been very hardy for me and is a wonderful heavy bloomer with fragrance. Morden Sunrise has a yummy fruity scent and also reblooms quickly. Of course there's the Austins Heritage, Jude the Obscure, Gertrude Jekyll, etc.. that are hardy here in zone 5 and very fragrant and good repeaters (in my garden).

I am in zone 5 - chicagoland. Austins do really well for me historically with very little dieback.

Also, I have an own root "valentine" I got from chamblees. This is the most floriferous little floribunda - very little disease. Dark maroon red, semidouble. Very low growing, no scent, so the japanese beetles don't bother it that much. Has been through 3 winters, I have 4 I like them so much.

Also, the buck rose, Prairie star, white, an upright habit. Nice light scent. Makes a good cut flower as it has longer stems. May die back in a hard winter but sprouts right back up there, very vigorous.

Dornrosen. This is FAR hardier than many of the roses I grow. I started with a smaller plant, and the first year I grew it I had a late season basal break survive below zero weather (no winter protection) with no cane damage. You have to deadhead it though. It REALLY wants to set hips, and the hips will slow the rebloom significantly.

I have had several Austins die on me. Last spring I got Jude, Evelyn and Tradescant. It remains to be seen whether they will survive the winter. I have not tried Gertrude yet because I heard that it was not a good rebloomer (picture looks great). I already have Baronne Prevost and she does not repeat. Rainbow Sorbet is a possibility. Prairie Star is on my list. It doesn't look like Roses Unlimited carries Dornrosen. Thanks for all of your suggestions.

Radio Times (tip hardy), Sharifa Asma (canehardy), and Golden Celebration (almost cane hardy) are winterhardy in Elgin, Illinois. All rebloom very well for me. Yolanda D'aragon is an old HP that, if pegged, has reasonable repeat and is tip hardy for me. Also, Rose de Rescht and Darlow's Enigma (both of these are very hardy, repeat very well and bloom in the shade)

Thanks for the suggestions. I am thinking about Darlow's Enigma for next year. I got Yolande d'Aragon last spring. Sharifa Asma is definitely hardy. Golden Celebration died last spring along with A Shropshire Lad and William Shakespeare 2000. I also have Rose de Rescht.

Krista (ktopp) asked me about the pink rose in the background of the Jude the Obscure picture above, which was a great reminder for me to mention another wonderful Unusual zone 5 (and 4 and 3) rose - Prairie Joy. It's name sounds like a Buck rose, but it is actually a Morden rose. It's pretty much bullet proof in my garden - extremely hardy with no winter kill (I prune just to shape the rose and stimulate new bloom). It's covered in beautiful very double David Austin-type blooms in June and then has lighter flushes throughout the summer. I first saw it in the botanic garden in Wisconsin and fell in love with it.

Prairie Joy looks great. Any fragrance? I am also considering some of the Easy Elegance series if the local nursery has them. Edmund's mentioned that Sweet Fragrance and Kiss Me are fragrant.

Are any Kordes roses fragrant and hardy in zone 5? I will try them.

Mutabilis & Lavender Dream do well for me. They have the same shrubby form & are equally carefree. Mine have survived & flourished for many years with little care.

Predfern, Prairie Joy is only mildly fragrant, but is otherwise an outstanding choice for gardens in zones 3-5.

For me Ballerina, is a must, in fact, I get tired of trmming it since it is so prolific. It always blooms massively mid-June and I offer it no protection. Minimal dieback, too.
Zephirine drouin is surviving its first winter well...in fact, it is still evergreen. I did not cover it either, but do mound snow on it about 3 feet thick.

I'm in the Quad Cities (straight west across the state from you) and Reine des Violettes is a beauty, it's a fragrant OGR, repeats lightly all summer after one huge spring flush and has no thorns to speak of. It's cane hardy here in my z5 garden.

Jim may have more to offer on other Kordes cultivars, but in my experience 'Scharlachglut' is absolutely rock hardy in zone 4. It is a once blooming red with a bold ring of golden stamens and single flowers. It makes a vase shaped shrub to about 6'. It is an outstanding landscape shrub for zone 4 and warmer.

I have 2 Prairie Joy. It's very hardy for me as well. After 8years its hardy, fairly diease resistant, great rebloomer. My only complaint with this rose is it balls in wet weather.

I live down state in Decatur. Any of the Rugosa roses, and most old garden roses are cold hardy. Miniature roses are also cold hardy. I have to cover my English roses or I would lose them. You can grow any HT'S and floribundas you want just cover them in the winter,I do. My roses come thru great every year.
I don't cover my minis or my shrubs and ogr.

Honey Dijon grandiflora is unusual for it's colorful blooms that resemble the mustard so named. You'll either love it or hate it.
Hot Cocoa floribunda is an everchanging color scheme of Brown, Orange, Rust, and even a tiny bit of pink will sometimes show through.

I grew Sweet Fragrance this year and liked it. I would not consider it anything more than mildly fragrant, though. Nice repeater and it seems to be handling the winter as the canes are still green. I highly recommend Prairie Star as it is easily my most prolific White. Good, strong fragrance, winter hardy, and very prolific bloomer. I haven't mentioned Cuthbert Grant or Carefree Beauty either but those two are definitely hardy enough for around here, and if you prune Cuthbert hard enough after the first flush, he comes though with several more flushes. Carefree Beauty is always in bloom. And Darlows is a great rose because it will grow and bloom continuously in heavy shade. I don't find it strongly fragrant, though. Illusion is another Kordes rose that does well, here. It's not totally tip hardy in my garden, but I always end up with enough cane, and it bounces back quickly. I grow it as a climber, but it could easily be grown as a large shrub.
Cuthbert, Prairie Sunrise, Prairie Harvewst, Carefree Beauty, Illusion, can probably be grown nospray here, although I spray all my roses
