I'm back...and planting my Austins. Help!

Hello all!!

I am generally a lurker on the forum, but with moving into my house & getting organized I've taken an extended break...not anymore!

I've already planted the following: WS2000, Abe Darby, Jude the Obscure, Geoff Hamilton, Bishop's Castle, Windermere, Golden Celebration, & Heritage. I gave Golden Celebration & Heritage the most room and I hope in my climate this was the best choice.

Can anyone comment on the performance of Jude & Geoff in So Cal?

Also, how have the following done for you?

*Belle Story

*Falstaff

*St. Cecilia

*Jubilee Celebration (have it, don't know where to put it)

Finally, I picked up The Squire as a bare root today and I am now thinking this was not the best choice. Can anyone comment about their experience with The Squire? How does it do in a large container?

Hi Deron,

I grew several of these in San Clemente. WS2000, Jude, and Bishop's all did very well for me, especially Jude which seems to like a warmer climate ("they say").

I had mixed results with Heritage which grew quite large (good that you have the space!), but also got very bad rust in my garden. Hopefully, you'll have better luck.

I also grew St Cecelia, and I really liked this rose. It had one of the best scents of all my roses, I usually just described it to people as "smelling like candy", everyone loved it. Sweet, strong, myrrh-based but with a lot of sweet fruit mixed in. It wasn't my best bloomer, but it bloomed often enough, and I was happy to grow it just to have the wonderful scent. I had no problem with disease on it at all.

Well, the damage has been done, so please don't fret yourself into a sleepless night. I have burned them, froze them and generally made myself a target of the plant police. They can be tough. If you get it back to the place where they thrived before, it could conceivably re-start. Keep it warm and moist, but not wet. Do not trim it anymore, let the pieces wither and shrivel. Do not re-pot or otherwise disturb it any more. Remember that with less greenery, it will need less water. And wait. This is not the time of year it makes new stems, so if it just sits there, that is normal. The parts nearest the soil need to be somewhat succulent for re-growth to occur. The brown bark nearest the soil covers the green that photosynthesizes. If you have even 1/2 inch of sturdy stem, you will probably have a little plant in the spring.

Hi Karen..thank you for your kind words of encouragement..I do believe in Prayers and Angels..and agree, that from all the wonderful, encouraging responces I've received here... I've found this forum to be a home to many. DH & I went out today to do some shopping and just enjoy the day..it felt good to be back to be doing just the simple little everyday things. kareen..thank you for your good wishes. DH & I are slowly 'bouncing back' to normal mode.. I think, any parent would do all they could to offer help or just support when needed..Funny how when you think you're not important to your kids anymore...they sure look to you for your strength in times like these..and it's also tough to show that strength when you want to just fall apart yourself. But, somehow, we manage to keep it together... I'm am so looking forward to our class with Judith...seems like there will be quite a nice size group joining in too. jane

Plastic pots could be found for free - next time you visit garden center, ask if they have any empty pots they don't need. May not be much available in winter, but spring to fall there is plenty that go to recycling. I have more than 200 plastic pots, of different sizes & shapes, that I didn't pay a penny for :) Another excellent source of inexpensive stuff are Salvation Army, Good will and similar stores where ppl donate stuff they don't need/want anymore. Problem with using cache pots (decorative pots or outer pots) is that many ppl do not think of emptying them of excess water after watering the plant (cache pots do not have drainage holes). Another problem could be when inner pot fits very snuggly into outer pot and that creates additional humidity - sweating - on inner pot, not good for plant. Beginers especially should make things as simple as possible and add "fancy", or decorative stuff as they learn more about plants. Poorly grown plant will still look bad regardless of fancy pot it is in :)

You are getting there :-)) You will have an entirely different perspective once you get the black pots elevated. And you can always add more color with flowering plants. What happened to the white/cream colored containers? You could mix them in with the black ones to make more of a statement. The pots in the middle photo (mostly blue tones) are still too lined up. btw, the groupings do not need to be equal in impact or quantity :-)

Robert, thank you for sharing your experience. St. Cecelia has such beautiful cups & looks amazing at The Huntington...I think it's on the short list.

Glad you gave Heritage & Golden Celebration quite a bit of room. They both are fairly large in my garden. Heritage is my favorite, but both have done well. GC has amazing fragrance.
