OT...I'm Back...and relieved

Hi all...I'm sorry to go off topic here. Please excuse my 'imposing' on you like this. I don't know if you were aware that I was 'missing in action' for a while. DH and I were in New Jersey helping take care of my 4 GKs, as my daughter was preparing to take a test for her Real Estate License. We were there for a week, (three weeks ago). The day after we left to go home, she went to the Dr because she found a lump in her stomach. They sent her to the hospital for some further tests...which led to a total nightmare. They said they found a mass in her stomach, on her left ovary, and suspicious nodes on her lungs and liver. Needless to say, we immediately returned to NJ. DH & I, were prepared for the worst. She then had to go for further testing MRI/CT scan. All of these results were becoming very conflicting as to what they thought they were seeing and yet nothing conclusive. Lots of talk though of (ovarian cancer). Well, I went with her yesterday to hear the Doctors review of all the testing. It seems that the nodes in the lungs are very minute..and don't look threating in appearance or shape, however, will be monitored -as well as as a small node in the liver which they feel the same about. As far as the ovary..they feel it was a large cyst that burst..which will also be monitored in 6 weeks)..As far as the stomach...(the original culprit)...they feel she might have torn some muscle.(she works out with a trainer)...Well, we are so terribly relieved and happy, but will be more so once the follow ups all come back with no change. DH & I have been so worried sick over all of this..We just got home today, and are 'recuperating' both physically and mentally.. To bring back some normalcy, I started reading some of the posts here, and Judith...I will be ordering my book asap..and look forward to some 'fun' diversion...so, please count me in. If I don't receive it in time, please start and I'll

catch up..if that's okay. I just want to say, I am so happy to be back here..

Oh, Jane, it is never an "imposing" thing to hear from you. I am so sorry that you and your family is having to go thru this. If it was my DD I would be a wreck! But, from what you have written it is sounding hopeful. And I can tell you from experience getting "away" from the situation by reading and doing other things can really help keep one's sanity!

I am so glad you will be able to join in with us, I think you will be able to catch up fine, I am thinking we will be going back and forth with questions and comments, so you will certainly be able to keep up I think! At any rate, welcome back, we will be here for you.

Jane, I was wondering where you were!! I thought maybe you went away on vacation...I wish it had been that.
What a nightmare, but I am happy to hear that things are improving. I will say a prayer for your dd that all the issues are resolved...

Florence, there are answers, and I hope your doctors find them soon. I had student a couple of years ago who had horrible headaches much of the time. She was 16 and had been to many places including Mayos. Last year I received an email from the parents that they had taken her to M.D. Anderson in Houston. They found something very tiny in her brain. They fixed it, and now she feels great. Sometimes it may not be the facility, but the doctors who happen to be there. You just need the right person to discover what is wrong. I hope you will be able to get some other opinions, and find out what in the world has happened. (A fellow teacher said that her daughter had minor surgery in her abdomen, the surgery made a nerve angry --"angry nerve???" And that was the cause of her pain. Lots of interesting points and I also was surprised by the foods on the list, most all of them being my favorites. Annie brings up an interesting point by saying that her old doc said "we were sanitizing ourselves to death." I couldn't agree more. Growing up, I stayed with my grandmother most every weekend or school break. Another cousin that lived close by did the same and we were outside and dirty from sun up to down. We ate whatever my grandmother fixed without complaint because we were so hungry from active play EVERYTHING tasted good. She bought staples from the store like salt, sugar and flour but everything else was raised or grown on the farm. When our cousins from out-of-state came for a week or two, their mother polished and fussed about them, forcing vitamins down their throats. They were very picky eaters as well. They didn't get dirty or if they did and their mother happened to see some mud on their clothes, they were wisked off for bathing and changing. I must qualify that I do understand the difference between getting dirty and filth. We bathed every day, mind you, with clean hands and face when we sat down to eat. Anyway, long story short, those kids were sick ALL the time. Their mother felt like we "country cousins" were quite primative ;) There is no better way to ward off illness than to have clean hands and work place when dealing with food. I have had fun learning safe canning practices here as well. That does not mean I shower my home in "sterilizing" agents but certain surfaces do get a bit of bleach in the soapy water once in a while and especially my counters and sink if I have been dealing with meat. That was the way my grandmother did it all those years ago, too. I don't know, I think common sense goes a long way. Those "super bugs" are out there now thanks to over-use of everything so we do need to be cautious. I want my house to be clean, not sterile. One more point I wanted to make or comment on (and I'll try to keep this short, sorry) is the use of antibacterial soaps and antibiotics. I am a nurse and have to use the antibacterial soaps (really strong stuff) on a very regular basis. About once a year I get this horrid painful rash on my hands and the first time it happened I went to my doctor about it. Seems that the bacteria, both bad and GOOD had been wiped off my hands and allowed some kind of viral thing to happen. The same thing happens when we take antibiotics and get various yeast infections. The good bugs are there for a reason! If we need the antibiotics, I'm glad they are there because they can be life-saving. I just think they are over-prescribed and many people aren't satisfied if they come away from the doctor's office without some. Lori

Wow Jane, I am tired just reading about what all you did! Sounds like a wonderful time and lots of work and effort on your part. What a large group to entertain! So nice that your DH helps you with the decorating. Mine does not help with the inside at all. I carry everything up from the basement including the trees, all the boxes, ladders, etc. The only thing he does outside is put a blow mold Santa on our mailbox, although this year, he did run an extension cord from the backyard for some of the lights as they kept tripping the breaker this year! Again, getting everything down out of the rafters, off of the shelves, and put up is up to me! Sorry, I just needed to vent a little. "Stone is porous and unfortunately hold undesirable attributes because of this." @Jason Martell resurrected a 5-year-old thread to add an ignorant statement. For anyone reading this--now that he has brought it up to the top from 5 years ago--please note that while some stones used for counters are porous, there are so many that are not. Many stone counters, both of granites and quartzites, need no sealant at all, ever, due to their low absorption rate (i.e. very low porosity). Some stones have such low absorption rates that the use of sealant mars their appearance; since the stone is so dense, the sealant cannot be absorbed so it sits on top, and causes the counters to look hazed and streaky. There are a number of posts on this forum from people who sealed counters of a more dense stone, and got that result. Quartzite, like granite, has different varieties that vary in porosity. Taj Mahal is one of the well-known quartzites that is not porous and does not need to be sealed. However, the OP's quartzite, Calacatta Gold, is not as dense and will need to be sealed. Jane, thanks for thinking of us in a "personal/family" kind of way to relate all you have been through lately. I think we would all agree that we want to "be there" for each other through the fun-decorating-times and the bad times too. It must have been so scary and stressful for you and your loved ones and no doubt, is still on your mind. I will keep you all in my prayers. Glad you are going to join us for Judith's class and have something fun to look forward to.

I noticed you were here!! I'm glad to hear things are getting better! I can't imagine how stressful/scary that must have been. Saying a prayer for your daughter and everyone else in the family! Glad you're back! :)

So glad to hear from you and that things are looking up, that must have been so scary for all of you--will certainly pray that everything clears up and your DD won't have any serious problems.

You should be quite entertained catching up on all the posts here, it's been staying pretty active with all the Fall decor being posted. Glad you will be joining in on Judith's class too, I think we will have some fun and hopefully learn a bit as well.

And I agree with DD, glad you wanted to share what's happening in your life with us, and hope we can offer lots of encouragement and maybe even a little "diversion". ;o)

Dear Jane,
I have been reading and sharing here for less than a month, so I didn't know you prior to your posting and felt it best to step back and let your old friends respond. Still, I feel compelled to write you and let you know how frightened I got as I read your story (even though you wrote the word "relieved" in the subject line), and how glad I was for you and your daughter when the tests proved less than you were led to believe.
I think if anyone manages to make it past middle age (I left that milestone long ago), then he's faced a pretty serious rough patch. We all know how it feels to be unable to sleep.
Not too long ago, someone (maybe it was Betty, I can't remember) wrote that if something happened to her, she'd given her husband instructions on how to let the people on this forum know. When I read that, I said, this forum and these people are the ones for me!
So keep us informed on the latest results. Hope you have a place to go for a second opinion. Although you're undoubtedly sick of doctors by now, it never hurts.

Hi Jane!

I am also fairly new to the forum. Even though I've never "met" you I felt your anxiety at realizing everything might not be okay with your daughter. I'm so glad the test results came back without the implications no one wants to hear.

Mother to mother, we all know that there is nothing more important than having your family healthy and well cared for. Best wishes to you and yours.

DD will be going to a different GYN for a second opinion, and will also be setting up another test with them. I know it never hurts to do this. I also know,
that if there is no change, that's when I will be truly relieved. Sorry I never got a chance to 'Welcome' you..but then better late than never!!

hi nessie..I remember you..and welcome too...Thank you also, for reaching out to me, to offer kind words of encouragement. You are so right as far as a mother wanting nothing more than a healthy family...to me, That is True Wealth, and Peace of Mind.

Nice to meet you Jane, I was MIA for months & didn't meet you, so HELLO!

I had an ovarian cyst that was very painful, sent pain down my leg and when the dr. examined me, he said "oh, it burst" and I said "what does that mean?". He said, "they are common & usually burst on their own"!

That was years ago, I mean years ago & never had another, so that is nothing to worry about.

I can imagine the panic you & your dh were in, so glad you are finally on the way to seeing the light at the end of the tunnel & better news will be on the way...

yachter..Hello to you..and welcome back as well... I know I've read up on all kinds of cysts including the one you had, and read how painful they are. I was praying that it was such a cyst that was causing many of the symptoms my DD was experiencing... It's frightening, because it mimics so many other more serious conditions..but definitely needs following up on.
We are praying and are hopeful for a positive outcome.

Jane, I wasn't here last night and just now saw your post.
I can't believe what a nightmare all of you have gone thru.
Its going to take a lot of mental and physical 'recuperating' I imagine.
Tell your daughter she will be getting a lot of prayers and caring coming from this Forum. The gang here does good work when it comes to that. I tease them about being Enablers, but in my heart I think there's a lot of Earth Angels around here too.

Hi Karen..thank you for your kind words of encouragement..I do believe in Prayers and Angels..and agree, that from all the wonderful, encouraging responces I've received here...
I've found this forum to be a home to many. DH & I went out today to do some shopping and just enjoy the day..it felt good to be back to be doing just the simple little everyday things.

kareen..thank you for your good wishes. DH & I are slowly 'bouncing back' to normal mode.. I think, any parent would do all they could to offer help or just support when needed..Funny how when you think you're not important to your kids anymore...they sure look to you for your strength in times like these..and it's also tough to show that strength when you want to just fall apart yourself. But, somehow, we manage to keep it together...
I'm am so looking forward to our class with Judith...seems like there will be quite a nice size group joining in too.
