Just a Few Pictures

My Isabella Sprunt had a pretty bloom. It came from Chamblee's and is in a 5G pot now. It is small and dense so far. Almost all my potted roses are mildewy now, not sure why.

Condesa de Sastago. We decided to turn the farthest and dingiest corner of the back yard into a "tropical corner" with a tibouchina and Mexican sage. I think Condesa fits very well there.

Every year I plan to take a special trip to take some pictures of fall foliage, and I can never find the time:-(. So here are some pictures I took in my neighborhood. We don't have those spectacular maples that people up North enjoy, but pistacchio trees make up for it very well. They turn multiple colors from pink to red to yellow to orange and there are lots of them around here.

Your photography always pull me out of "lurking" around the GW forums.

I love the idea of a "tropical" corner. I have many pastels amongst my garden so your idea is very inspirational.

May I ask the name of the lavender rose in your second photo?

Who needs maple trees when you have these spectacular pistacchio trees.
I'm so glad you posted the name of the tree.

Beautiful pictures..I WS Malva Zebrina in 2009 and it came back this year but not as strong. Something has been eating the leaves. I sprayed but last year it was much taller. That maltese cross is a beauty and I like it with sundrops. Is this the first time you have grown sundrops? They spread fast but are always so pretty. I had them at my former home for years. We called them "Aunt Pearl's flowers" because my husband's favorite Aunt gave us the original plants. You'll find them everywhere you didn't plant them if you have a windy spell in the winter or early March, just like forget-me-nots..and Johnny Jump-ups too. The wind carries the seeds and plants them wherever!

Nancy: No I do not use a flash outside at all.Ms Blackie had her eyes squinted half shut, because the sun was very bright,and she had just walked out of bright sun into the shade.She dont act like the same cat that came here about 7 yrs ago.She was so wild and skinny,I could not get closer then 15 feet from her.She is still on the skinny side,even tho she eats good,she never puts much weight on. and yes, she really is content.She seems happiest when she can be near me and just looks me right in the eye and purrs very loud. Thank you Rita, I do love these Red lilies. I will have to bring this Pink rose outside and give it some sunshine,as it wont live long inside,and as it grows I will pot it in a bigger pot. I planted Hydrangeas in the ground years ago here and none of them lived,so wasnt going to take a chance with these two and put them in big pots.Well,the one is planted in a large plastic tub as you can see,and I just drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom for drainage.Besides these tubs was selling for $ 4,00 each at the time,and the big pots was $ 20.00.I plant tomatoe plants in these big tubs too each year and those tubs are now 10 yrs old,sitting in the sun all day, so they do last a long time, too. Them scapes are beautiful to me right now.Its hard to wait to see a bloom. Jean

I like Carnival in Brazil, mine has increased well, but no scapes on it yet. I bought from Shaws sale in the fall also, and everyone I got is doing great. Nice pics. love the group shot of Strawberry Candy Cindy

Beautyberry plants are kind of leggy/gangly shrubs if left to grow on their own. However, they respon real well to pruning and pruning them back once or twice a year will result in fuller shrubs. It is said you can even cut them back to the roots in early spring and they will come back looking much lusher. They can be rooted from cuttings, but I think they were one of the plants that are rather time sensitive on when you should take cuttings. Too early or late and they tend to fail. Seeds, however, are super easy to sprout. I got my beautyberry plants from clipping a 6 inch length that had two nodes of berries on it. I threw them all in a pot and covered with soil. Very beautiful, Masha. Strangely, I've been trying to think of some pale yellow roses for the last few days and you come along with a really beautiful one that I'd forgotten about. I've begun to realize that my roses seem to be mostly pink, purple and white and I thought a pale yellow would be good for contrast and added interest.

Your roses are beautiful but, what really surprises me is the fall foliage. I didn't know Autumn was so pretty and colorful there.

Oh so pretty Masha! I have to find a pistachio tree. Several were planted in the Mississippi State Univ. trial gardens here in search of a good ornamental tree. They did very well.

Thank you, Kitty and oldblush. Pistacchio trees are great in the fall, but here they are pretty brittle and prone to dieback - not severely, obviously, but enough to require consistent maintenance to look good.

Masha, beautiful photos as always!

Last year I noticed more mildew on my potted roses than on my roses in the ground (which also still had plenty of it, too). This year all roses in pots or in the ground are relatively clean of mildew. Go figure...

Isabella Sprunt looks like a very nice pale yellow rose. I really do like her.

The color combination of Condesa de Sastago with the Mexican sage and the Tibuchina in the background is so outstanding! I really admire your sense of color!

The autumn pics of the trees are very pretty make me miss the Bay Area quite a bit. Maybe I have to visit soon, again :-)!

Masha, I was so pleasantly distracted by the pistacchio tree photos that I couldn't concentrate on the roses! Very, very beautiful trees you have in your neighborhood. Thank you for posting them. I wonder if they are the same trees as what's grown here? People call them "Chinese Pistacchio" here. Do you think they are one and the same? I look forward to seeing them every fall & they are just now beginning to turn colors here.
