reine des violettes came back! (etc)

a little while ago, my very spindly band of Reine des Violettes dropped all its leaves (AGH!)... and those were like the only 3 leaves it's had since I planted it in January, so that was discouraging... but I fertilized all my roses about a week ago, and now RdV has new leaves! So I guess she doesn't completely hate me. I still might pot her up.

an older bloom of Jude the Obscure, still smells great and has such lovely color! The only reason I had this bloom was that I missed this bud. I've been trying to be good about pinching so I can get more plant growth. :)

I am glad that your RdV is doing better, I might try and buy her after all next spring, so I can join up "Problems with RdV" club. Maybe leave her be where she is while she is showing wish to grow, maybe she settled in new place small bit, so disturbing her now might be not that good idea.

The Pomponella from what I remember had rather lax long canes, so your plan I think would work with that obelisk thingie. Still have to figure where I am going to put mine lol.

I hope your RdV makes it; it's such an enchanting rose and the fragrance is simply beautiful. Pomponella is a new rose to me but very pretty. Your pot ghetto seems to be thriving.

I have two own-root, one from The Uncommon Rose and one from Chamblees. Both were planted in 2007. My gardens are no-spray. My RdV are not shooting out long canes, but many thin pliable canes, the longest of which is maybe only 5 or 6 feet. Karima, is yours a grafted rose? If so that may explain the huge growth spurt in one season. It really doesn't explain the stout canes though, that doesn't seem to be a characteristic of this rose but I've never seen a grafted version. I have trained some of the longer canes along a 4 foot high fence and temporarily tied the shorter ones to a pyramid that I move around the garden as needed. The young canes are so lax that they'd be in the mud if I let them be and I want to see those beautiful blooms.

linrose, my bad. You'd think that staring at the plant name right on the page would clarify that, yes, it's 'Lemon Bells,' and not 'Yellow Bells.' Sorry. I had thought of Betty Corning, too, and agree with you that the color and shape would work but, at least for me, it's too bushy a plant to work well with my RdV. I really like the simpler, thicker vines of the atragenes versus the chaos of the viticellas. Have a look at Frances Rivis, Joe Zary or 'Jan Lindmark' for something in a blue to purple range. 'Emilia Plater' is a possibility, too. In yellow, 'Helios' might work. I love mine, tucked in with Golden Showers. Here's another 'Lemon Bells:' You might try dropping Debbie a note at Silver Star and asking her if she has any 'Lemon Bells' tucked away. I bought mine from her after she sternly insisted I needed it in the garden and it's one of my favorites, in part because it's so unusual. Everyone comments on it and we anticipate its arrival every year. Joy Creek Nursery in OR is another possibility for some of the more rare clematis. You could call Maurice there for some recommendations. They have access to many of the Japanese cultivars as well as the Rogerson collection and are sure to be able to suggest something exciting. I think the single, most beautiful display I've ever seen on any rose may have been years ago, on a 'Reine des Violettes" that we pegged, nearly flat to the ground, with just enough arch to prevent the canes' snapping. It was astonishing when it flowered. Hundreds of closely-packed flowers. On the other hand, we've never done it again, because after that flower flush, the structure of the plant was a mess, and we pruned at it for a long time to make it "normal" again. And it was a lot of work to peg it in the first place. Nowadays, we grow it as an untrained, unsupported bush, which easily reaches 6-7' tall by nearly as wide in a season. We do prune it fairly hard, especially for height, in the spring. We get a major bloom flush in the spring, then a few flowers here and there all summer, then another heftier flush in the fall. It then continues with a few flowers through the winter, until we prune, usually late February or early March. (this is in Lakeland Florida) Malcolm

So beautiful! Just have been getting into old roses for the past couple of years. Always nice to see pictures of them blooming in someone's yard. It gives me more of an idea as to how they will actually perform (rather than the staged photo's of a nursery catalog). Love Duchesse de Rohan. Now I have to go look it up and read more about it. I'm glad your RdV is doing better. I love the color although, mine doesn't bloom as much as I wish it did. Maybe too much shade. I love your pomponella bud; it looks just like a peony bud minus the ants. How long does your angel's trumpet bloom. I was thinking of growing one in a pot and bringing it in for the winter.

RdV was one of the first roses I thought I wanted, but now that I've learned more about various ones, I'm more on the fence about her. But I'll keep babying this one and see how she does. :)

As to the Angel's Trumpet, I really don't know! I got it a couple months ago and it had some buds on it, then not for a while, and now it's blooming again. I have it in a pot. I guess they can get really big, so eventually I'll have to put it in a larger pot. I got it as an experiment. :)

Kitty----I too am nursing along my RdV-----I rescued this bush at Home Depot a couple of years ago----Just did not have the heart to walk away from her-----

Hopefully next year she will "leap" into bloom

My Reine des Violettes took a while to get established. Now, years later, it's actually a remarkably tough rose in my garden, surviving quite well with my occasional neglect. Don't give up, she hasn't been around since 1860 without reason! I refuse to garden without her. At this moment, on our master bathroom counter, there is a perfect single RdV bud in a vase with her unique foliage all the way up to the bud. The bud hasn't even fully opened up yet, and you can already take in the legendary RdV fragrance.
