A white--'Huldine' comes to mind. 'Arctic Queen' is not a big grower. 'Languinosa Candida' is nice, too.

The advantage of the type III's is you can cut the whole thing off a few inches above ground level and pull it off the rose at pruning time.

Another possibility, the beautiful Korean chiisanensis 'Yellow Bells', a small, 6-8 ft. pale yellow clematis that will clamber through the canes of RdV and add a charming contrast. And imagine those purple vines running through the green leaves of both plants. Wow!

I have a purple leaved, white flowered Clematis heracleifolia in that place. If only the deer would leave it alone. It's a nice plant. Shrubby, not too big, but big enough to make a statement.

What about Belle of Woking? (I've never grown it, but based upon the catalog pictures wouldn't the flower probably be a good color match?)

Good choices, I'm only familiar with Huldine and Belle of Woking but have never grown them. I tried looking up Yellow Bells and couldn't find it, could it possibly be 'Lemon Bells'? It looks really amazing. I think a pale yellow would look terrific with RdV. After strolling through Clematis on the Web and Silver Star Vinery sites I have too many tempting choices. White will definitely work, I have one with Maggie (John Huxtable) that looks great. Maybe a soft pink would look good also, something like Betty Corning???

linrose, my bad. You'd think that staring at the plant name right on the page would clarify that, yes, it's 'Lemon Bells,' and not 'Yellow Bells.' Sorry.

I had thought of Betty Corning, too, and agree with you that the color and shape would work but, at least for me, it's too bushy a plant to work well with my RdV. I really like the simpler, thicker vines of the atragenes versus the chaos of the viticellas. Have a look at Frances Rivis, Joe Zary or 'Jan Lindmark' for something in a blue to purple range. 'Emilia Plater' is a possibility, too.

In yellow, 'Helios' might work. I love mine, tucked in with Golden Showers.

You might try dropping Debbie a note at Silver Star and asking her if she has any 'Lemon Bells' tucked away. I bought mine from her after she sternly insisted I needed it in the garden and it's one of my favorites, in part because it's so unusual. Everyone comments on it and we anticipate its arrival every year.

Joy Creek Nursery in OR is another possibility for some of the more rare clematis. You could call Maurice there for some recommendations. They have access to many of the Japanese cultivars as well as the Rogerson collection and are sure to be able to suggest something exciting.

Lost in a fog of clematis on Joy Creek's website, I came upon 'Yuki Komachi,' which I think is my choice for placing with Reine des Violettes. It holds the same colors but in a very faint pastel. Sent my imagination soaring...and now my wallet is a little emptier.

Thank you suze, yes I'm beginning to appreciate those bell-shaped clematis more and more, there is something so sweet and elegant about them. I like Yuki Komachi, it reminds me of a campanula, with the bell shape facing upwards.

Lemon Bells is a very special plant, a 'find' you might say! Those purple stems and delicate pale yellow bells, yours is lovely. And that photo of Helios with Golden Showers - wow - you have a special gift with pairing of roses and clematis. I never think to use similar colors but it's stunning.

I think a whole new world has just opened up to me, and opened up my wallet too! Yes, it's clematis fever time, now that the roses have been ordered. Keep on enabling!
