My thanksgiving this year for the GardenParty

It's been a rough year for most of us (Gandle, Mwoods, Wandaredhead, Lilo... I could go on), but I am still very thankful. We are here and can still commune together. Health aside, we're still here. We got to see those who had been quiet for so long: G'ann, bugfood, and KathyJane. Katie even checked in from Guatemala. A couple of us got to see Michelle in person. Pidge came back with movie news. From near and far, we're still friends. And I am thankful for all of you. I know it's a little early, but I am just thinking about how much worse my year could've been. I narrowly missed being homeless several times. But even if I'd, I'd still have you. Even if i didn't mention you, meldy, mwheel, anneliese, LindaC... you were still there, keeping us keeping on.

Robin, Dear Heart, you are so appreciated by me; you're a survivor and *one tough cookie*--and I mean that as a compliment. Whenever/whatever you post is eagerly read and appreciated--from the good times to the hard ones.

I, too, am thankful for the GP and its members; this is the one place I visit every day when I'm on line. If I can't get here, I feel as if I've missed something important, and revisit, ASAP.

I sincerely hope each and everyone of us has a Happy Thanksgiving.

Sandy, Count me as one of those "teary eyed" people too. Can get choked up at any little kindness or concern! Often even get that way at church services--especially the really moving ones. I love your new tradition. And it is so good for all of us to focus on the good things in our lives. Goodness knows we certainly hear more bad stuff than we need to. Hi Larry We will miss you this fall! But we will make sure that we get our spring party to see all our friends. We had so many blueberry pies, banana breads and other things made for this time. When Lucy when to the animal services tested negative for heart worm, the vet said that in the beginning that happen, so she really is on time to be cured, she already went to the first treatment and the second is at the end of the month. She is also taking antibiotics now. She looks good and happy, she is only upset when she goes to the vet for a treatment because they keep her under observation for the day. Sorry to hear about the avocado...this summer has been very hot. Larry we hope to see you this spring but then Lucy should have a full recovery. Thank you Kathy, and I hope that now the treatment is better and used different meds, the vet was very optimistic because we catch the disease in the beginning. Hi Bradisha Thank you for all the positive things that you said about Lucy, the garden and the parties. I will be so happy to meet you and one day maybe you can come for the garden party, they are so much fun! It is always a pleasure to see your beautiful garden, please keep posting! The only thing "different" will be the day. We're having dinner with the neighbors. Both hubbys work Thanksgiving Day so we're celebrating with our Thanksgiving Dinner on Sunday. More time to pre-cook! I want to go out for Chinese; she's young and still wants to have all the "traditional" foods so we're planning... Turkey or Turkey Breast and small portion of Ham Cornbread Dressing I'm making the cornbread and freezing it Tuesday. Mashed Potatoes I'd skip these, but she wants them. All I need is dressing! Groovy Gravy Creamed Corn Her favorite; she's making it. "Something" Green My favorite so I'll make it. Hot Yeast Rolls A "spoon roll" recipe that can be made up to 10 days ahead. Any size portion can be baked when needed. I'm mixing it up Wednesday. Can we say way too many carbs for this diabetic! Cranberry Sauce Going easy and using canned this year. Pecan Pie Her favorite, and we love it, too. She's never made a pie; she's coming over Saturday for a crash course! LOL I'll make the dough the night before. Pumpkin Pie Our favorite. She's going to make it, too, under my watchful hawk eye! LOL

But what this 170,000-square foot facility on Choctaw Drive doesn't have as the holidays start is food. The situation has gotten bad enough that the charity, which serves an 11-parish area, is putting out public calls for extra help, for extra donations of food, and especially for money to purchase additional food. High-profile disasters, including hurricanes Florence and Michael, as well as the ongoing wildfires in California, have diverted the supply of donated food as well as drawn away cash donations that might ordinarily have gone to help hungry people locally at Thanksgiving and Christmas. “You would ordinarily see all of these shelves full,” said Mike Manning, pointing to two tall, long and nearly empty stretches of metal shelving at the rear of the facility. These shelves is where the the charity normally stores its dry, canned and staple foods. Manning, president and CEO of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, said instead he is flush with candy, a relic of the Halloween holiday, pointing to a big box of M&M bags. “We’ve got a lot of candy,” Manning said. “That’s not what we need.” About 30 volunteers, several of them employees of ExxonMobil, were on hand Monday sorting donated canned food. Many people brought their families. The empty shelves are not visible from their work area. Katie Skiles volunteered on Monday with her father Joe and brother, James, but she said she has worked there by herself since she first volunteered more than a year ago. “My parents made me come,” Katie said. “Now I love it.” A senior at Lee High in Baton Rouge, Katie, 17, said she was not aware of the food shortage. She said she might talk to the National Honor Society at her high school about doing a food drive. The warehouse currently has about 1 million pound of food in its inventory, about half of the normal inventory, Manning said. One million pounds of food is also roughly what the food bank distributes each month to its 100-plus member agencies, he said. And to top it all off, this is normally a time of peak inventory, when the food banks stock up in order to have sufficient supply for the early months of the year. “I’ve never see it this bad going into the holidays,” Manning said. Besides recent disasters and the resulting “donor fatigue,” another food supply factor is the shrinking donations over time from commercial grocers who carry less excess inventory than they used to, Manning said. To help restock, the food bank has asked local schools to do special food drives. What would help most, though, are cash donations, which people can donate online on the charity’s website, Manning said. “We are kind of held hostage by the national situation, unless we can get sufficient money to purchase food,” he said. It doesn’t necessarily take much money to help. Manning pointed to palettes full of canned vegetables without labels on them. These cans, when they have commercial labels, cost 70 to 90 cents a can at the store, but without the labels, they cost the food bank between 5 and 10 cents a can. Manning said he’s talking about having a more formal fund drive around New Years to raise money, but he’s been too busy to pull together anything more formal sooner. “We’re in firefighting mode right now,” he said. “We’re just asking for help.”

Whenever I think something is hard to do, I think of you, Robin and how strong and resourceful you are and all the bad times you conquered.
I am thankful for all of you, especially since I am the last of a group of friends here.

Thanksgiving memories '50s and'60s

Mom had seven sisters and brothers each with their own kids. Grandma's house was the go to place for Thanksgiving dinner. The yard was about an acre it seemed and three quarters of it was garden. Corn in the back row, beans and peas, potato hills and squash, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, turnips, onions and much more. Rhubarb and ground cherry bushes were around the front edge. The chicken house was full and eggs were plentiful. All of this bounty went into Ball jars and ended up on the shelves in the root cellar.

We drove from Urbandale to Shellrock the day before or early that morning. Cherries and apples from our yard were packed and brought along to make pies. Velma, our Mom, Dora, Marlys, Leola, Margaret and Roberta were vying for their spots in the kitchen under the eye of Grandma Lena. It was a very busy kitchen. There would be as many as twenty kids out playing games in the yard while the men watched the football games. Some of us would pick ears of corn and peas right from the garden to munch, mmm so good. Some years we would head to a local pond and fish with our red and white bobbers on bamboo poles.

Grandma had a huge round oak table that could be extended with three centre boards. the dining room was the largest room in the house with a coal burning stove. There were two or three card tables set up for the kids and a side board to hold the food dishes that would not fit on the table. Some of us kids were put to work setting the tables. The smells from the kitchen were overwhelming by this time and the men would try to get tastes of favourites as they wandered in to the kitchen for another Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. They could be charming when entering the Women's domain to steel treats.

When we all sat down to eat the conversation would be about what had happened in the last year with each family. We were the furthest away and learning these bits of news was always interesting. The meal would linger for an hour at least or more then the older kids would have the job of cleaning up the table and washing the dishes. Men would retreat to to living room for more football while the women took over the dining room to continue the family news. The latest knitting or needle work was passed around while all the kids lives were reviewed.

Napping was in order for those affected by the triptophan then the local families would return home. we usually stayed over night and left the next morning as the drive was long. Have had and been to a few Thanksgiving days since but none on the scale of the ones I so fondly remember. We make our own memories of special events as we progress through our lives with new friends family and acquaintances. Make the best of your holiday this week and savour the experience.
