Are you having anything different for Thanksgiving this year?

We're having corn pudding, which is different. I think I made it once for Christmas or something. Other than that, it's the same old stuff.

I think I may make some yeast sweet potato rolls. Other than that just the regular Thanksgiving Day food. They usually want the familiar holiday foods.

I'm trying to do all gluten-free this year, so I think the rolls will be a challenge.

Yep!! I buy Caladiums every year. The day they come out as bulbs in any "big box" store, I always buy 2 bags, take them home and pot them up....put in a warm place out of direct sun....last year I got caladiums going faster yet using a heat mat on low setting... then after last frost, plant them outside. I wait until May here. It's alot cheaper than buying potted ones that are all leafed out already, and it beats waiting for them to sprout if you just plant the bulbs outside. You can dig them up in fall and try to over-winter them, but I never bother.

I also tried a mix of cherry tomatoes and it sold very well. People loved them and kept coming back for more. I had Black Cherry, IsIs Candy, and Dr. Carolyn. The Black Cherry is a for sure for next year and I will probably grow the others also. I also plan to grow some other different ones to add to the mix. Was planning on trying the yellow, red, and black pear tomatoes next year for a mix. I think people would really like those too. People always love our colored peppers, and were especially crazy about our purple ones (Islander from Johnnys). The purple ones sold out every week, and is another thing people just kept coming back for. I plan to grow those next year and add another purple variety also (different shade of purple). I also grew one type of green sweet pepper and people loved that also. I plan to grow other types of sweet peppers next year. I grew Bush Baby Zucchini (from Johnnys) and that seemed to do pretty well. DidnÂt grow too many of them since it was just a trial, but next year I plan to grow more of them. In the spring our salad mixes did really really well. We did not plant any fall lettuces and greens though because we have big plans for the area we plant them in and are going to be working on putting up a hoophouse, and rearranging everything. No one else at our market sells lettuce and greens which is why I think they sell so well for us. Well those were some of my biggest successes and I will have to post again about what some of my failures were.

Layout Critique - would you have done anything differently so far

I love GW. I agree 100% with GreenDesigns and all of you who suggested that the range should go on the one wall without any openings and the refrigerator should go back on the wall where it was. In fact, the mental picture I had of the kitchen that way was so beautiful that I completely forgot how we ended up with the fridge in the middle of the other wall. So we tested it out and rolled the refrigerator around the room (it's nice to be able to do that since it's the only thing in there) and tried it out everywhere. And then I remembered how we ended up with it in the kitchen design no-no spot. It's a monster. It's a 31 cu. ft french door model that is basically 36"x36". On an unrelated note - it rolls around like a Cadillac - so easy to move! Here it is in it's proposed spot: Anyhow.... the little walls opposite from each other next to the doors to the living room and laundry room stick out not quite 35". The little wall on the other side by the dining room sticks out not quite 31". The doorways are tiny - the one on the south wall is only 30" wide. Putting the refrigerator on either end of the run that you all so wisely suggested just feels cramped both ways. On the dining room side the refrigerator door opens into the dining room opening which is where people always seem to congregate when we entertain. I was constantly having to open the refrigerator door in their face and say "Excuse me". On the other end of that run it makes the entry into the kitchen from the living room seem very cramped and makes for an odd view from the hall/living room. And we'd have the same problem of the refrigerator door swinging into the opening. I guess since that rubbed us the wrong way with the old layout we gravitated towards the polar opposite. I so badly wanted it to work that way you suggested, especially picturing the backsplash I want for the range, but the structure of this house (a very tiny 1950 tract home) is not cooperating. So I think we will have to break with design guidelines and stick that monster frig in the middle of the wall. Hopefully with the wall cabinets it won't look too strange in the middle of the counter run. I haven't given up on your suggestions completely. This is not our forever kitchen but it is our right-now kitchen so we have to go with what feels most comfortable even if it looks a little odd. If we ever have the opportunity to build a larger kitchen I am keeping GreenDesigns suggestion in my notes because I LOVE the idea of a range in the middle of a larger counter run and the refrigerator wall as more of a snack center with a smaller counter run to one side and the toaster oven right there. And I haven't abandoned the idea for this kitchen entirely yet either... Thank you so much! I have learned so much from this discussion. I'll definitely post pictures of whatever we decide to do and I'm sure this won't be my last question. Back I go to rolling the refrigerator around...

Yes. Reservations at a Dinner Theater! Our group of four couples takes turns each.year to have Thanksgiving dinner, and last year the gal whose turn it was said "enough cooking, let's go out!" We went on a charter bus, had a wonderful dinner, saw a great show, and the best part was no dishes to wash! We're doing the same thing this year. No leftovers, but we don't care.

We go to a friends cabin for TG. They make the turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing and I bring some side dishes. This year I'm making two new veggie dishes - one is a roasted root vegetable dish and the other is a kale dish with lemon balsamic butter. If I'm really ambitious I'm also going to try a new apple and wild rice salad.

The only thing "different" will be the day.

We're having dinner with the neighbors. Both hubbys work Thanksgiving Day so we're celebrating with our Thanksgiving Dinner on Sunday.

More time to pre-cook!

I want to go out for Chinese; she's young and still wants to have all the "traditional" foods so we're planning...

I'm making the cornbread and freezing it Tuesday.

I'd skip these, but she wants them. All I need is dressing!

Hot Yeast Rolls
A "spoon roll" recipe that can be made up to 10 days ahead. Any size portion can be baked when needed. I'm mixing it up Wednesday. Can we say way too many carbs for this diabetic!

Cranberry Sauce
Going easy and using canned this year.

Pecan Pie
Her favorite, and we love it, too. She's never made a pie; she's coming over Saturday for a crash course! LOL I'll make the dough the night before.

Pumpkin Pie
Our favorite. She's going to make it, too, under my watchful hawk eye! LOL

So can you share the recipe for spoon rolls, Caroline?

I am having the usual favorites. We added Glenda's corn pudding last year and will have it again. It will be a high carb meal with fresh turkey and sage dressing, geen beans almondine, green salad, candied sweet potatoes, corn pudding, mincemeat peaches, pumpkin bread, wine and lemon custard merangues (sp?) for dessert. Decided with one branch of the family not joining us that we will omit the twice baked potatoes this year.

Same old foods but we're having dinner delivered pre-cooked from Fresh Direct in New York City. My daughter's kitchen has about three feet of counter space, just not enough to prepare the whole shebang.
