Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, Veterans Day, whichever one knows this day by, we give thanks to those who have served our country, offering more than most citizens choose to or can give.

It's a particularly poignant day in our family, rich in military history. Whether one is a 'hawk' or a 'dove' it matters little, where honoring our soldiers are concerned. They were asked to step up, and they did. Those who were obliged to do so, still gave it everything they had.

I'm thinking of my father, who saw service in three wars, and was an MIA. His brother, who fell on the beaches of Normandy in WWII. His cousin once removed who fell in the jungles in the Philippine Insurection. His grandfather, who left six children and a widow in the Civil War. Another Grandfather who was captured by Morgan's Raiders and sent to a Prison Camp, and a Great Grandfather who was also captured and was a POW. His uncle further back who was imprisoned in England during the War of 1812. Another two grandfathers further back who saw service in the Revoluton, despite their Quaker principles. And countless others in the family tree who served and returned and went on with their lives, men changed forever.

My thanks and gratitude go to all the men and women -- from whatever era -- who helped to preserve our way of life. May we never take their service for granted.

We are in the middle of a dandy storm right now, I woke up about 4:30 this morning to wind that was making our old house creak, I could hear thunder in the distance. 10 minutes later lightning lit the sky and the thunder was just a booming. The ferry system between the island and the mainland is shut down, DH just heard on radio, the cars in the long term parking lot at the Tsawwassen ferry terminal are covered in seaweed. Last year around this time Stanley Park on the mainland was devastated, at last count 10,000 canopy trees came down. DH and I saw some of the destruction when we drove through the park on the way to our son's place. It really was horrific. It looks like the weather patterns are really changing around here. Oh well, at least the rest of the leaves are down, only one more cleanup. Annette

Today is Pearl Harbor Day

There doesn't seem to be any let up in the number of people visiting the Arizona in Pearl Harbor or Punchbowl, but it's 'distant past' for many young people today. Two of my uncles served in WWII -- one in the Pacific. I only remember the war efforts -- saving grease, needing ration stamps to buy restricted items like gasoline, tires, shoes, and my mother laboring in her Victory Garden.

I spent the day with my dad, a Retired Air Force Col., my mom a former Marine who served 3 years in WWII while my dad was in China flying fighter planes. Then my brother served in Viet Nam in the Air Force, yep it was an emotional day. There was a nice ceremony at the nursing home, complete with Honor Guard and 21 gun salute.

I thank all Veterans from the bottom of my heart and I pray for those that are currently serving, continuing what those before them did, Protecting the Freedom of this great country.

Few people I know realize that this was first held for WWI. The moment of silence at 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month when armistice was signed. The opening line of "In Flanders Field" always makes me shiver.

"In Flanders Fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses row on row,"

I did know about the moment of silence and the adult day care where I take my dad once a week, did start theirs at 11, but the nursing home did not know and therefore did not have their until 2, but at least they remember to do something.
Flander Fileds was read at the first ceremony, it always brings tears............

And it's been 90 years since WWI ended. I think there are only a couple of WWI Veterans left alive in the world. I remember visiting the WWI battlefields in France. The trenches are still there after so many years and I found them both moving and disturbing.
