7 Ways to Make the Most of This Weekend
Get your kitchen ready for the holidays, cozy up, make a fall wreath and salute veterans
It’s a good weekend to check off a few tasks (like getting your knives sharpened) before the holiday season begins in earnest, add some cozy comforts around the house and hang a wreath on the front door. Also, with Veterans Day coming up on Saturday, Nov. 11, show your gratitude for veterans’ service and sacrifice by flying an American flag, attending a Veterans Day event or visiting your local VA hospital.
2. Get your knives sharpened. Good knives deserve to be treated well, and that includes taking them to a professional knife sharpener about once a year. And with fall and winter holidays approaching, this is a great time to get your knives sharp and ready to work.

3. Roast fall veggies. Once your knives are back from the sharpener, you may be amazed at how easily they slice and dice. Why not put them to use on a nice, big tray of roasted fall veggies? The markets are bursting with fall squashes — try a tender-skinned variety like delicata, kabocha or acorn squash and you can skip peeling it.
4. Add cozy fall details. Warm up your home with touches of fall. A fire in the fireplace, a bowl of nuts, a soft throw draped over your favorite armchair, a stack of good books — it doesn’t take much to create an inviting scene.

5. Make or buy a fall wreath. A wreath made from fragrant greens or colorful berries adds a cheerful note to your front door and, if protected from the elements, should last a month or more. (A preserved wreath can last for years.) The DIY version shown here is fragrant with fresh rosemary and eucalyptus.

6. Feast your eyes on colorful mums. This ubiquitous fall flower takes center stage at the annual Chrysanthemum Festival at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, which runs through Nov. 19. Can’t make it to Pennsylvania? No worries. Garden centers all across the United States are full of these colorful blooms, so you can still pick some up to enjoy from the comfort of your front porch.

7. Honor veterans. Veterans Day, a national holiday that honors American veterans of all wars, is coming up on Saturday, Nov. 11. Celebrate patriotism and pride in the United States Armed Forces, and show your gratitude for veterans’ service and sacrifice by flying an American flag, visiting a VA hospital or attending a local Veterans Day event. Or, if you still have some unopened, recently purchased Halloween candy hanging around, consider donating it to Operation Gratitude. This charitable organization sends care packages to new recruits, veterans, wounded warriors and U.S. service members stationed overseas — they collect candy only through mid-November but accept other items on their wish list year-round.
