Sassi is here!

We are totally smitten.

That tiny little black and white ball of

puppy love waltzed into our lives today

and wrapped both of us around her little paws.

I left this morning at 10:30, drove to South Carolina

met with the wonderful folks that have enough love for

oodles of poodles. Sassi's mom was sad and with good reason.

Her babies were being taken away. Her human dad took her

upstairs so she wouldn't see us take her little girl.

Neil walked in sat down and immediately had a poodle in

his lap. Then he was holding another one. Sassi was

playing with some of the others on the floor. I wanted to bring them all home with me.

She made the trip fine, we made several stops to take her

out of her crate and let her go potty and to drink and eat.

She wouldn't eat til we got home so I gave her some sweet

stuff called Nutri Stat.

I'll take some pictures tomorrow.

I just hope she does okay her first night away from her

parents and playmates.

She is sound asleep now, she's so precious and so cute

I'll probably be awake all night just looking at her.

Jan, your post is so full of LOVE and JOY! I can't wait to see pics of Sassi. She will get over missing her kin when she discovers all the love you have waiting to share with her.

So where are the pictures & what kind of poodle is she? They are great dogs & exceptionally intelligent. I know you're going to be enjoying her puppy antic this holiday.

Spin out bags or cloth Sassy?

I've been working on a huge spin-out project this year. Planting new and digging up and re-planting many hosta under maple trees in the spin-out bags. I put the giant and XL ones in the 10 gallon size, some large-medium in 5 gallon bags and small in the 3 gallon bags. I, also, noticed that the bags are much deeper than necessary. I just dug the hole as deep as I felt necessary and cut everything off above the soil line, leaving about an inch above the soil line. I'm finding that I kind of like that inch or so because when I water, the bag is acting as a reservoir and the water doesn't run off. I know that each hosta is getting an inch or so of water each time I water...lol I added mulch to the bed around each bag sticking up so the tops of the bags aren't even noticable. Time will tell if the project is successful. So far everything looks good. But, too early to tell if I've conquered the maple root problems. I hope so! I have three more new ones to plant and probably won't dig up any more until next year.

Hey Sassy, I am glad to hear your feedback on your experience. I have one noid which I believe is Honeybells that I thought was melting out last year from too much sun. But after reading more in the threads on nematodes, I suspect that nematodes may have been the cause. No clear sign of anything on it yet this year...but, I know what I can do now. By the way, the link you provided shows information from the webpage of our very own gardenweb member pietertje who started the thread "A matter of identity....". Hi Natebear! I do have pics although the house isn't "done". Haven't hung any artwork yet. Sassy is a great beauty, and it wouldn't surprise me if someone has taken her in, whether or not they realized that she already had a home. And I think that the chances are that she is being loved and well-cared for. Cats also know how to find warm sheltered places to sleep, and so on, and Sassy's coat should keep her pretty comfortable. That said, I know I would be a mess if one of my cats disappeared like that! It would be unbearable, so I really sympathize with you. I have had 15 cats in my life and it has been my experience that they generally know where their home is and will hang around near it, even if they haven't been out before. But a female in heat...now a cat in that condition might roam farther, unless a Tom scents her and shows up on the doorstep, so to speak. Spaying will lessen or even remove a cat's desire to roam. Cats, unlike people, are stimulated to ovulate by mating, so if a Tom was hanging around, Sassy should have gotten pregnant pretty quickly, and her "heat" would end shortly thereafter (I forget if it is a matter of hours or a day or two.), and she should have come to her senses and tried to find her way home. It is true that she might get confused by a lot of apartments all looking similar, so by all means do leave familiar-smelling things in your yard. Once, when we were about to move from Japan to the States, I had to give two cats away to a friend, who foolishly just put them on collars and leashes the first day, in an area where they could get outdoors. Well, within hours they had both slipped the collars and disappeared. She called me and I rushed to her house, which was a 29-minute train ride and 15-minute walk away. You can imagine how churned up inside I was, the whole way there. We went around her neighborhood calling the cats' names, but nothing happened. Her family let me sleep that night in a little detached room in their garden. Before I went to bed, one of the cats came to the door of that room and cried to come in, and the other came round, crying at the door in the middle of the night, so we got them both back. In the end, they were left free to come and go at their new home, and they never got "lost" again, but this shows that cats can remember their way around, even in an unfamiliar place. I would expect that Sassy did not stray very far in the beginning, but probably some kind person picked her up and is caring for her. She may get loose from them someday and find her way home. I would not give up on walking around from time to time, calling her name. I agree with what others have said about the fence. If Sassy couldn't get under or through it, she could still have gotten over it. It is amazing how high a cat can jump, especially if the fence is a bit rough and she can get a bit of extra boost by putting her claws against it near the top. Our two cats have been microchipped. They hardly seemed to feel it at all. Vets usually use a sensor to check for microchips on stray cats people bring in, and a number of lost cats are recovered, thanks to that. The sensor actually reads and displays the number on the chip. Having your pet microchipped gives you a lot of peace of mind. Here's hoping you find your girl! Meanwhile, Lucky Girl is lovely, too, and I know she is in good hands with you until her owner can be found, or even if he/she cannot be found.

Oh how funny. I was just thinking of you and Sassi this morning and wondering when the big day would be. I'll bet you and Neil woke up this morning with the biggest smiles and that "I have a dog again" feeling. Can't wait to see her. I haven't seen any black and white poodles in person but after you told us about her I did some Googling and brother are they ever cute and as adults,really beautiful. Congratulations Jan and all I can say is I hope you are good at taking little cat naps during the day..you are going to need them.

To tell the truth, our whole family is in love with
this tiny little personality packaged in a white poodle
body with a heart shaped black face, black feet, white
and black ears and a black spot on her little rump.
Her markings are so unusual.

She stands up and walks on her hind legs and sits up.
This baby probably weighs in at a pound or a little over.
Katrina has been here all day and they are best buds.
I've tried to get pictures of her but she is never still
long enough. She'll come over and sit up and turn that
little head to one side, I'll have the camera ready to
capture the look and then she will jump right up in my face.

I look at her and wonder how in the world could anyone
ever cause any harm to anything so precious and so full
of love. I wish all of you could see her.
She brings out the best in all of us.

Chewing ability, pretty darn good I'd say.
First she went after the pajamas til he rolled them up.
She then discovered the shoe laces.

Needs chew-sticks; and other acceptable leather chewies from the pet store. ASAP

You're right, Andie. I was not amused when Mackie gnawed my favorite handmade shoes; leather -shoes, coats, purses- remained a lifelong temptation he couldn't pass by. Lalee was given chew sticks as soon as her teeth showed and she never chewed on human garments.

I'm a member of the baby poodle chewing club. Digby is happy no matter what he's chewing so I just immediately substitute and he's fine. But what do you substitute for poop?? Jan,she is so cute. Take a gazillion pictures because in just a week she'll be bigger.
