I am thinking of doing a couple black doors as well, not all my doors, but I do love that look. So I vote yes to those.

I did think I could just do the entryway doors (front and closet) black and the rest white, but I am continuing the wallpaper in the upstairs hall so figured the bedroom doors should be black as well. That just leaves those two French doors to haunt me!

Black in a large block like a door can be, well, light sucking. I'd vote to keep the main home's doors black, but choose white for the rest, including the more airy seeming french doors. To get an idea of how much black will close in the space, take some trash bags and tape them over the doors. You really have to add additional lighting when you use a large amount of black in a room.

Someday I will have a pink living room. Love the idea!

My concern with your home, though, is the floor color: the wood is very orange, and I don't think you can pull off pink walls unless you do something to cover the orange-ish floor. Are you planning on getting a neutral colored area rug/carpet like in your inspiration picture?

(I have orange colored floors too. They wreak havoc on lots of my favorite wall colors.)

Maybe you could do a warmer pink. This floor has yellow in it, showing mostly on the left side.

I painted some of my interior doors black in my current house and love it. I chickened out and didn't go with the high gloss black, but think that would look fantastic! We kept the door trim white and didn't think it sucked out the light....but prior to painting they were stained rather than white, so the extra darkness wasn't off putting. In the end, I feel like it looked crisp.

I do agree with choosing a warmer pink for walls based on the current floors. Another option is a warmer tone of gray on the walls with pink furniture and accessories. You will definitely need the right rug to tie it all together, but think it could look fantastic.

I will say that I do question the wallpaper in the entry though ....maybe too stark unless you plan on tiling?

I think what you're trying to do is going to be very hard to pull off.
The wallpaper is really nice, but it's also very bold and may be a bit much to carry it through all your hallways. I think it might be better suited to a smaller space like a powder room. If you put it adjacent to a pink living room, you run the risk of an ice cream parlor effect. You'd be better off doing a pink living room with something more neutral in the hallway to complement the softness of the pink walls. I think that's also why I wouldn't put black doors in there. I'm not a decorator so it's just MHO.

@awm03, funny you mention the floors. We are having them refinished. I am not going totally dark, as in ebony, but they will be darker. But thank you for bringing that to my attention! I never even considered the color of the floors and how that can impact the color on the walls.

@snookums, do you happen to know what color that is? I have searched a few other pinks and love so many. Do you have any rec's for "warmer pinks"? Would love some input! My daughter's room is going to be F&B Middleton Pink.

@chickadee2, if it helps, the entryway is very small. I am only carrying it up the stairs and into the upstairs hall because there is no ending point at the top of the stairs. Also the hall upstairs is fairly small. I do see your point about the adjacent pink room and ice cream parlor effect. Will take that under consideration.

@kellienoelle, thanks! I did read somewhere that if you do a high gloss black that it won't suck all the light out, but bounce the light back into the room. Who knows if that is true but it sounded good. : ) As for the furniture in the living room, we have a coral zebra armchair and a navy velvet camelback love seat. We don't have a rug yet. We will live with what we have for a while before committing to a rug.

It will take a very keen eye to use your choices in a harmonious design without it looking like an ice cream parlor, as someone above pointed out, or a sorority house. If you are serious about the black and pink--- which I think could be fabulous if done right, btw---I would hire an interior designer to help you with the public rooms downstairs that flow one into the other.

re the black doors -- maybe a soft, off-black would help mitigate the risk of it all turning out like an ice cream parlor. Off-blacks on the doors perhaps so as not to overwhelm and to complement the black in the foyers.

It looks like there's a lot of bright light in that LR inspiration photo you posted while your new living room doesn't appear to get as much light? Just something to keep in mind re: painting the doors a dark color.

I painted both our breakfast room and master bath in a pink with orange undertones (BM whispering peach) and love it...very bright and cheerful, kind of like a sunrise/sunset but definitely reads pink.

First of all, let me say that I do hope you post pics of your progress. I want to live vicariously through you as I can appreciate many of the elements you have chosen but do not have the guts to do them myself.

I think that KSWL's suggestion is a good one on the interior designer. Even if you could get a couple hours consultation. These are bold (but absolutely wonderful) design elements and a second set of well trained eyes may prevent costly mistakes.

As far as the black doors, since those are French doors, I do not think they would suck all the light out as you will not have a solid slab of black, the window panes will definitely help in that matter. We have just started painting our doors SW Bohemian Black. I chose it for the more muted black color and we did it in high gloss. The more muted color suits the more muted, old world colors in my house (SW Napery and Compatible Cream). This black has a purplish undertone but it will be hard to know what you need until you can get in there.

I'm kind of surprised that not everyone said "wow, yeah, do it". I don't see the floor as a problem. As for the french doors, they might look best in trim or fireplace color. Were those going to be white, or gray, or a deeper pink, or ??

Thanks everyone! So much to contemplate. I really want to hit the ground running once we close (end of March) since we will be in temp housing until the painting is done.

@snookums, thanks for the color name! I see what people are saying about the Bridal Pink. I did bring some of those concerns up to my DH last week and I am considering other pinks. I just don't want to have to paint 10 swatches of pink on the walls to figure this out! I know, that is how it goes sometimes.

@hlove, I thought the same thing about the light. DH said the living room does get more light than we remembered when we saw the house last summer. But still something to consider.

As for the black doors, I am on the fence. I know that pink and black can be done well, but not sure I want to risk it! So, maybe just do the front door black, both sides, and call it a day. I guess I can change my mind on that once we close and I see the house again.

I like your color sense. You have a decent eye, IMO, so if you've got a hankering for pink & black, you could probably pull it off :) Maybe you could go to the paint sites -- Sherwin Williams, Ben Moore -- and play with the paint simulators. You could test out various pinks & blacks there.

I am still contemplating the black doors but maybe I'll change up the tone of pink in the living room to make it less ice cream parlor. I have tried the BM color viewer. Need to try it with pink and black.

I have almost black doors (Benjamin Moore Raccoon fur) and trim, in almost all the rooms in my house. I love them. A couple of the rooms are on the north side of the house, and even with a lot of black furniture and accessories, I havent found that it sucks the light out. I love them, and would do them again.

Nice! My favorite combo is with the pink. Kudos to you for bravely going bold. :)

Thanks, Natebear! You are very kind. I really can't imagine having white doors anymore! We really love the dark doors and I am glad I didn't go with a true black (although in the back of my mind I think,"one day I will have black doors!")

I love the doors and your colors! Also, I noticed you have lever door knobs. Good for you! We need to change ours now that we are older and I find it harder to turn knobs-seeing that you used the levers (and they look terrific, btw), makes me feel a little less old! :)

@cyn427, well, I can't take credit for the doorknobs. They were already here! In my dreams I would have all glass/crystal knobs, but that is too cost prohibitive right now. But I do agree that they aren't half bad! Thanks so much for commenting.
