Update on back surgery------WHOOPPEE -------

I'm WALKING without a cane-----It is so wonderful to walk around the garden and the roses are putting on a very fragrant show this year----

I will be very careful for the rest of my life----no digging or twisting-----but I will not complain--just enjoy the fact that I can walk

Last week-end we went to grandson's graduation from Penn State----

Followed Dr's orders----we got out and walked every hour on the 4 hour trip -I was so happy that I was well enough to enjoy this milestone---

It has been a longer recovery this time----and I did get discouraged at times but finally I no longer need a cane or walker---I'm thrilled !!!!!!

Hope everyone is OK and sure wish people would post more--I miss all the old-timers--

Congrats Florence! That is great news!! I figured you must be doing well when I saw the pictures you posted of roses in your garden. Now don't over do it!!!

Florence what wonderful news! This is a very long road you've been traveling - I just couldn't be happier to hear you are getting the results you'd hoped for. How does it feel to have both hands free when you are up and moving without a cane or the walker, must be liberating :)

And congratulations on your grandsons graduation, you must be so pleased not to have to have missed that weekend!

Datils are a great pepper, from Fla. too. Try the sweet datil , it is not hot but is one of the best flavored peppers out there. Glad to here you will be having a local supply of peppers. Field grown peppers have always given me much higher yields then pots so if you can keep up with the weeds the sky is the limit. Good Luck Dave

Westbourne Oranges For Christmas--I believe this picture is wind blurred. Golden Prize--really very orangey-gold. Barnegat Light--humidity caused the blurring effect here. One Eye Willie--this one is becoming one of the best small flowered daylilies we have. Most of the scapes are above the foliage, a couple reaching the registed height and these scapes are producing the registered number of buds which is 33-36. I know because I did the count and could hardly believe it. Galaxy Explosion--lots of flowers continue to come on this one. Really unique color, I think. Southside Yellow Border--the hot dry weather has held down the blooms this year. Coffee To Go--the best it has been, great surprise this morning to walk out and see how good this plant looked. Got lucky and had enough cloud cover so the flowers weren't bleached out. Thanks for posting the winter pictures! That helps.... Given that winter is the longest period, it does make sense that the shed is 'snow colored' :-) So, in the growing season, to blend the shed in better I'd try to add some blues and whites to other parts of the yard. Consider trying to eliminate the upper level of the raised bed, clean out weeds, and plant the rest with something like pansies/violas - I think they do well in the north and, if you chose ones in a range of blues/dark purple, and white that would pick up the shed colors and connect the shed to the sitting/lawn/garden area - add some of the same pansies to pots by the sitting area and the greenhouse to further link the shed into the yard. I'd paint the door on the greenhouse to match the color of the covering as best you can to fade the greenhouse into the background. But, to further draw your eyes away from the greenhouse and further connect the shed to the rest of the yard, try planting delphiniums in the area by the greenhouse. Remove the white rocks that make a raised edge around the tree near there and try to just smooth out that raised bed to make it part of the lawn. I'm not very good at modifying photos but here is my crude attempts at showing the changes proposed: Summer: Winter - greenhouse area: I did some Google image searches to see if I could find pictures of the suggested plants in the Yukon - delphiniums Peonies Pansies If you found a local source of seeds, the delphiniums and pansies could be easily grown from seed - use that greenhouse of yours :-) The delphinium seeds need cold stratification to germinate so you should have no problem giving them that! :-) Back in the days when I grew them from seed, I just left the seed package sitting on the back porch for a week or two. Most of the peony pictures in the link are indoors - bouquets and flower shows - but some are outdoor plant pictures so ask around locally to see how well they do in your front garden. I'm sure the pansies would be available locally anywhere plants are sold, but you could probably grow them from seed too. It's been interesting thinking about gardening in such a different environment :-) Have fun!

My island is 9' long, curved on the seating side, and 6' deep at its longest (yes I reach a bit to clean the 2" that are farthest from me). Some thoughts from my experience: i just never ever ever would put the sink in my island. Rinsing and loading dishes is he least glamorous job in the kitchen and I prefer to do it looking out the window, pretending I am elsewhere and surveying my garden. Plus all of the dishes on the island, where 5 people are presumably eating. This would make me miserable. My island has 4 seats. With my family of 6 never has every seat been taken at the same time. The island is for coffee and laptop, chatting with the cook, light meals like breakfast or lunch or "leftover night" taken in small groups. My table is a lot closer than yours, though, so it allows many seating options for these meals. Real meals are consumed at the real table most nights. My point is: do you need 5 seats? I thought I did too but I'm glad I didn't bother. 9 is a lot of island but it still allows for easy circulation -12 seems a bit much but idk if I can pretend I would notice 18" on either side. I would be more worried about it looking silly For all that island, there doesn't seem to be much space to the left of the sink im not going to dig in to the specifics of your space but if it were me I would try to orient the kitchen to the right, keeping the sink by the window and making the island shorter. I would also consider if there is a way to fit a table in the kitchen, eliminating the need for so much island finally, while your current set-up seems kooky, I can say that 15 years cooking in a kitchen with an island stove, when set up properly it is great, so don't necessarily let your experience with the current kitchen sour you on the idea if it is in the mix

Glad it went well. As you know the 1st year usually does; if anything is going to go wrong, you will feel it in year 2.

I have an appointment at Rothmann in Philly in August. Hopefully I can get rid of the spasms.

Hi Angi---------I remember you --it has been a long time--GW doesn't seem the same anymore---many are now on Facebook--
I won't be doing much gardening anymore since my second back surgery----I'm lucky to be walking but have to be very careful---------hopefully the roses will survive---Grandson's (Max) graduation was lovely---we had a nice time------
My grandson Eric will be graduating this May ------college is out by Pittsburg------long trip------hopefully we will make it-----
Robyn's divorce still dragging on-------hopefully it will be over soon---It has been very painfull for all of us
Hope all is well with you and your roses will soon be blooming------

Hi Roselvr,

Thanks for thinking of me----Hopefully the divorce will be over soon but the pain for my daughter lingers on---It is affecting her health in many ways---she is heartbroken about the loss of her family life--her gardens etc--
As for my back---I'm still walking OK --still have some pain in the left hip which was replaced before the second back surgery.

How are you doing? seems like many folks are suffering in one way or another--

I'm grateful for the mobility I still have----

I hope more folks join us here on Conversations--

I do check on Facebook and see many from GW posting over there----
