I was helping set up for a brunch yesterday and one of the women there brought her tea cups and saucers for us to use. ( Suzy's thread made me think of this.) There were 36 of them..all different and the most gorgeous china and patterns I have ever seen. This woman is about 70,I'd say and she told us that these belonged to her mother. What her mother did was pay herself 50 cents every time she washed a window and these tea cups were what she purchased through the years..up to the time she died. If I paid myself every time I washed a window I might have about 4 china tea cups and saucers. I'd be wealthy if it were cat vomit I was cleaning up.

I'd be there with you, Marda, on the window washing,
however, I would more than make up for it with cleaning
gutters and blowing debris off the top of the house.

It is a good idea and would certainly be a great way
to start a collection and make a lasting memory.

Well the idea of rewarding yourself is not so bad. I have been really fighting depression recently ever since a dear friend of mine died about a month ago. Just sitting around moping mostly and doing the minimum I can get away with. The one thing I have done is go swimming once a week. This is the mininmum for keeping in shape so I can SCUBA when we go to Mex this winter. Every day that I swim I feel better, endorphins, I suppose. Yesterday my son promised me a hot fudge sundae if I swam three times this week. Now that is an incentive! Maybe, maybe I will.

That small bed will not grow a tree, even a dwarf hardy variety. It is encased in brick, which is then surrounded by brick, and so will heat up the soil inside it unnaturally, and also dry out quickly. The roots won't be able to spread to find water, but anyway water will immediately evaporate in such an environment. Rainfall will runoff that yard into the street and not stay in the yard. Plantings there will have the same fate of drying out. The entire area is literally like an oven. The reason pizza ovens have brick in them is so the crust will get crispy. You've done that to your front yard. And that's summer conditions. In winter, the tree's roots will not only be too dry, but also be unprotected from cold. Long Island is located within the "USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7a and 7b, which experience annual average minimum temperatures of 0 to 10 F". No tree will survive that winter if it is in that bed. I do not know what the OP was thinking by all that brick. It was really a wrong choice. I'd rip out most of it if you want any greenery, and also if you would like your house's AC bills not to be astronomical. I bet your neighbors don't like what you've done to the appearance of the block. And come time for re-sale, your home now has no curb appeal.

You could do something sculptural, but I like the idea of more colorful art like you have on the other wall. You've got so much brown and neutral colors, some more color would help make the room less one-note. I'd even consider layering an area rug in that space for the same reason.

While we wait forthe paint gurus, my only suggestion would be to paint the house one color only. not a fan of two tone for this style home.

Marda your tea cup story reminded me of my great aunt Frances' tea cup collection. She had several dozens of them, all very fine & most of them had been gifts from my Aunt Margaret who brought them back from visits to her far flung family who lived scattered across the British dominions. When Aunt Frances died, my cousin Judy took them. She now says she uses them for parties & dinners where they always start a conversation.

I contented myself to taking Aunt Frances' china - service for 14!!

Marda, I am with you on the cat vomit. I would be retired and living on my own southsea island if I paid myself for that little chore. Which is why we have 22 year old carpet. Keep waiting for the puker to die, he is 18 and still going strong.
