A Sneak Preview

Sunrise and Mystic can't wait for you to come explore the prairie:

I love the texture of the grasses at this time of year.

As you walk, you might see a brilliant purple exclamation point, the blooms of purple prairie clover.

Along the wetter edges, you can find swamp milkweed, a name that does not do justice to these flowers.

The view back across the wetlands is full of texture - a statement that we couldn't make a few years back.

The native loosestrife, Lythrum alatum, is more subtle than its thuggish brother, but it still brightens up the wet prairie.

Two friends of mine are strolling through the back, looking for Deanne. They were all ready to put on a show for her.

I hope you have a book of "before" shots to share with us. This is just super. I can't wait!!! I won't even polish my shoes. Bug spray though may be needed so they don't carry me off. Love the milkweed. Expecting butterflies as well!

Nana, I've had the bunny but found the matching wire tea pots at Dollar Plus last month. Creek, glad you enjoyed looking. Jeanne, I have a few more blue jars and hope to come up with a way to display them before Easter. The half gallon Kerr jar was DM. Since thats our last name I had to give it center stage. I added white grass but will continue to work on that too. The flowered plates, creamer and sugar set are Generic but I plan to use them for a spring table setting. Put them out so wouldn't forget I have them. As I've said before, you don't miss a thing. Maybe you missed your calling.LOL Karen, the bird cage came in 3 different sizes at Ross or TJ Maxx. I believe I bought the middle one. The bunny train is one of Kurt Adler's creations. I still have several totes to go through if I make it there. You have so many wonderful bunnies and I always love seeing them. Hope you have time to share some with us. I do suffer from mental fatigue any more. It drives me crazy that I end up sleeping occasionally for 12 hrs. I come home from work, eat and I'm out. Not sure what I should do about it but for now I'm just dealing with it by sleeping when need be. Seems to be coming more frequently than I care to admit. Makes it hard to stay on top of all the posts here too.haha So glad all of you like the teal bunny. I have the teal crackle plates from DD that I hope will match. Punk

Hi kulagal, Joan is the real pioneer here. I discovered the Nichiha product on GW when I was looking for an alternative to cedar siding to minimize maintenance. At that time, she posted her gorgeous home and about a two years later, we used the same product, but with a slightly different finish color. We attempted to build our house with an arts and crafts feel, although now that it is nearly done, most of the neighbors refer to it as the Cape Cod house. Go figure. I definitely think that real cedar siding or the Nichiha Premium Sierra Siding (which is the overlapping siding you see above) would be appropriate on an arts and crafts inspired home. We have been extremely happy with the product. Good luck with your decisions and please ask any questions you may have. I love to give back to the forum which shaped and changed our home in so many ways. There are more pictures on our blog which you are more than welcome to peruse for ideas if you want. We are about 2 weeks out (fingers crossed) from completion.

I could plant another Bougainvillea (the red bush up front)in the area in front of the telephone pole. It doesn't need much water and it grows really fast. I may be able to grow a plant from cuttings. Not sure. The lawn in the back could use some water. A Mexican palm in better shape (I think the two in front were transplanted without good dirt or watering) would do well with little water once it has been established. You should see the large plant the landlord cut down in the back because it was too close to the patio. As far as blocking the pole from the inside besides putting mini blinds on all the windows and french doors, I will be covering the entire length of the patio with solar shades. I have 2 eight foot shades and two six foot ones. I think I will have 2 of the 8' ones on either side of the 6' one. I will have 6' one rolled partially up so the dog can go out to the yard. There are 3 support poles which are a bit over 11' apart. So 8 + 8 + 6 = 22' which means that setup would work. The solar shades not only keep the space cooler but also create an outdoor "room" of sorts. Always loved having a covered patio since I have been here. Do morning glories like 110 or 115 degrees? The bird of paradise plants do pretty well, as does a rubber tree plant although the rubber tree seems to like the shade better. Yucca plants are good here. Roses are great too as long as you water them. There are two rose plants up front but planted too close to the door. I am moving those in the back some place. V., oh how lovely your land is!! I am so sad that I will not get the opportunity to see it in person and to visit with everyone again. I would love to see 'before' photos if you ever care to share them, it sounds like you've done a lot of work to reclaim your land. It is beautiful and a bit fun to imagine wagon trains traveling through.

LOL I'm sorry to laugh V but when I heard we needed to bring long sleeved shirts and long pants I pictured six foot tall grass that we'd be hacking our way through...sorry but I got a good laugh out of that.; ) On a serious note what lovely land you have and it's exciting that you've made progress-confirmed by the creatures that make the prairie their home! I can't wait to see this in person!
Deanne you don't have to sit in a corner with your thumb in your mouth....just come over for a day or two-just tell Doug to sleep alot and set up a mini fridge next to the bed: )EASY! And make sure you plan it to be Fri. Sat. or Sun when I'm there: )

Hey they have bug repellant wipes. I think I will bring some since they will travel nicer than a bottle of bug spray.

V, I didn't realize the extent of your property. I can't wait to see it. Our pasture is considered to have enough native grasses to be considered prairie. We no longer put cows in it for that reason. So it all looks somewhat familiar to me. Thanks for the sneak peak.
