Scott's Weed and Feed with Atrazine is the best. It is a little pricey but its effective. If you live in the state of Florida, call you local Agricultural Extension office one of the Master Gardeners will be willing to come out, a small donation, if anything is the cost and they can assess your lawn and yard for you.

Basagran is listed as safe on St Aug as long as the temps are below 85. It should take care of any broadleaf weeds you have.

Check out henbit, creeping charlie (ground ivy), mallow, and veronica (speedwell). Some of those are perennials, which I don't think you'd be bothered with right now (not sure), but some, like veronica and henbit, are winter annuals. You'll want to learn the right time to apply herbicide. I don't study weeds but do recall these are very similar in appearance. Exactly what yours are I cannot say because all I named look so much alike, but it is one or two of those. As for the bushy one in the middle, I need a better look at it. Can you provide a closeup photo?

That gives you about a 2-day window of opportunity around January 3rd.

One of the problems I had with weed killers and fungicides (back when I used chemicals) was that where I live in the south, there is just about zero time to apply them "according to the label." The requirements for temp, wetness, and dryness just never matched up with the actual environment.

The second leaf from the left looks like upside down dichondra. That stuff usually gets a pest every August and will die out on its own; however, it leaves so much viable seed that it recurs every year. The one on the right looks like henbit. Henbit is embarrassingly easy to pull out. The root is about as strong as wet noodle. The big one looks like rosemary. I know things grow wild in FL. Could it be rosemary? If it has a tap root, I would use a Weed Hound tool on it.

Have you tried weed-b-gone in a hand sprayer? It should take care of the broadleafed weeds.

Weed and feed products are a waste of money. If you need one or the other, just get that one. If you need both, get both, and apply the fertilizer about 2 weeks prior to applying the weed killer. Sometimes feeding the grass will crowd out the weaker weeds. Just don't get the mixed product. Preferably get the weed killer in a hand sprayer so you can spot spray.

I do believe the two on the left are dichondra and the one on the right is dollar weed. In looking it up I find that dichondra is used as a ground cover in some places, but I don't want it in my grass. The bigger weed is a large weed, but does appear to be dying out now. I dont have any idea what it is. But there are so many of these coming up everywhere in a large area I couldnt spray each one individually and with the Floratam I am told I am limited to atrazine, still not sure about the Basagran on Floratam.

Looks like some type of spurge to me. Read the label on Atrazine.

Atrazine is mainly for grassy weeds and some broadleafs and also has a pre emergent effect.

I forgot to tell you there is a product called "Image" that you can use on S.A., but I would probably go with the Atrazine.

With the exeption of a hand full of days it's below 85 degrees, from Nov.-march. I haven't had much luck using premergents, atrazine works well for me. on most weeds.

What do you use? I have had excellent results with the use of products containing pendimethalin or dithiopyr.

It's timing first and then a year 'round thing for me. You cant put it down just one time in early spring and then think your good to go until the following spring.

patsys....Do you use a preemergent on your S.A.? I am not familiar with the application timing (Feb-Mar?) in Florida though.

My lawn is fairly new, June 2006. I used weed and feed with atrazine in Feb-March 207, and some spot with atrazine over the summer. I dont know what else I can use on Floratam. Every weed killer I see in the stores say not to use on Floratam. Any suggestions for me?

Ortho Weed-b-Gon spot weed killer says it's safe for Floratam.

patsys, I could not access the pictures but I gather that they are broadleaf weeds. I have had quite good results by applying atrazine on St. Augustine BUT I use a flat fan nozzle on a back pack sprayer and always use a dye. I calibrate the back pack to my rate of walking so that I can be sure that the amount of atrazine required is put down on the turf area. Another product, 'Speedzone' is labelled for only certain types of St. Augustine and because of its 2.4D content, attention to accuracy is totally important. When using 'Speedzone' I also pay attention to wind speed because 2.4D drifts incredibly. Even so, I always leave a buffer strip of at least six feet from any desirable broadleaf plants.
I time this activity for the latter two weeks of February. Any grass weeds are best sprayed with glyphosate and the area resodded. Pre-emergent chemicals have never worked satisfactorily for me in turf.

Image for St Aug is atrazine, and so is ortho weed B gone. I read that Speedzone is not labeled for floratam any longer. I can only get 4% atrazine. I spot sprayed on the what I think is dichondra Sunday and haven't seen any results yet. Have not watered since then, but it rained a little bit this afternoon.

patsys, weedkillers, properly applied, will take some time to show dramatic results - wilting, shrivelling - but you will see effects in 7 to 10 days.
Incidentally, atrazine is not one of the ingrecdients listed on the label of either "Image" herbicide or "Ortho Weed B Gon MAX" with or without crabgrass control.

ronalawn, sorry I wasnt clear. Image for St. Aug and Weed B Gon spot killer for St. Aug both list atrazine as the active ingredient.

patsys, OK, I found the label. The 'Image' product contains 4% atrazine and should be applied at a little over half a pint in enough water to cover 1000 sq.ft. (9 oz. in 1.0 gallon water would be my choice). It is important that the material gets into the soil and it would take at least 10 days or so before results are seen. Generally the contact/dessicant type of weedkillers show rapid results. Others take time but are more effective in that they destroy the target plant systemically and thoroughly.

Thanks for that info. I spot sprayed with 4 oz in 2 gallons water, still not seeing any results, except for what I think is kyllinga is turning yellow. I'll try that ratio next. Unfortunately I have over 10,000 sq ft sodded area, with all kinds of weeds and chinch bugs too. It never ends.

We have the same weed (the large one in the middle) growing in our lawn. We moved in last year and our St. Augustine lawn was beautiful. We have concluded that my husband sprayed the wrong chemical on our lawn in May and killed it in several areas. This weed has taken over! At first, I thought it was chamber bitter, but most pictures I see of this plant are green and the branches are more spreadout. The weeds invading our lawn are more compact, have sturdy (almost tree like) stems and branches, and are green & red on the stems and leaves with pods underneath. I haven't been able to identify this weed yet. Have you been able to get it under control?

snsn....i am getting the same thing in my lawn. i am here in central florida 6yrs and this is the first time i've seen it. your description is spot on. these things look like they belong in a japanese bonsei plant. keep looking for answers and i will do the same.
