Dogs and Oleanders

We bought a puppy without ever knowing Oleanders are a threat to dogs. I have 7 large Oleander bushes lining the side of my house. Do I need to be that worried about my dog eating the leaves or chewing on the bark while we're gone?

I have heard that because they are so bitter and nasty tasting, dogs tend to steer clear of them. The only time they are a threat is if a leave lands in a puddle, the sun beats down on the leaf, then the leave sweats the poisonous juice and the dog drinks the water that has poisonous oleander juice in it.

Is there any truth to any of this?
