Tell her they are only toxic if they eat too many otherwise it calms them down, lol. That will keep her from ever coming back to your house, lol. Maybe thats not a good idea, lol. I had a lady at a nursery tell me they would kill you if you touch them and thats why they didn't sell them. Stupid huh.

Maybe I'm just an instigator, but there is a guy on the plant exchange with a post that says "deadly oleander" and I had to give him a piece of my mind too. Think he got the idea after many many reponses tellling him he was none too bright.

So many people are so idiotic. I try to ignore the morons..i honestly do try..but somehow 9 times out of 10 I wind up getting into arguements, because their stupidity pisses me off

I told them they should be arrested for selling oleanders instead. Just kidding, lol. I don't remember what I told her now but it wasn't nice something to the effect of you need to know what the heck you are talking about before you tell people things like that and half the plants you sell are poisonous but none of them are going to kill you if you touch them.

Hey everyone help me out here I have some oleanders and I love them they over winter for me very easy bloom very easy all summer long BUT all i read is how toxic they are. one story was that a horse ate 3 leaves and died. I would just like to know are they really bad or not? thanks for any info Cindy

CIndy, yes oleander can be very dangerous if ingested. I have several plants and cats, dogs and children. You kinda learn from an early age down here to never touch and oleander as a kid.
From Wikepedia: "Oleander is one of the most poisonous plants and contains numerous toxic compounds, many of which can be deadly to people, especially young children. The toxicity of Oleander is considered extremely high and it has been reported that in some cases only a small amount had lethal or near lethal effects (Goetz 1998). The most significant of these toxins are oleandrin and neriine, which are cardiac glycosides (Goetz 1998). They are present in all parts of the plant, but are most concentrated in the sap, which can block out receptors in the skin causing numbness. It is thought that Oleander may contain many other unknown or un-researched compounds that may have dangerous effects (Inchem 2005). Oleander bark contains rosagenin which is known for its strychnine-like effects. The entire plant, including the milky white sap, is toxic, and any part can cause an adverse reaction. Oleander is also known to hold its toxicity even after drying. It is thought that a handful or 10-20 leaves consumed by an adult can cause an adverse reaction, and a single leaf could be lethal to an infant or child. According to the Toxic Exposure Surveillance System (TESS) in 2002 there were 847 known human poisonings in the United States related to Oleander (Watson 2003)."

Gasoline, Paint and electricity are very deadly. Much more so than any plant.

I guess I will have to walk, let my house rot and sit in the dark. ;-)

Does the lady feed her children potatos? I agree very many plants are toxic, but how many people do you know that aren't capable of keeping their children from eating someone else's plants?
I do raise birds and so I have to be careful about which branches I give them to chew and make perches and nests from, but the amazing thing is that I have never seen a wild bird die from eating a poisonous plant. If you give them something they don't like, they won't touch it.
Too bad some people aren't that bright....

I'm not the kind to just throw away a plant because its toxic (I'm a brug lover) and i'm not trying to say oleanders are bad and should all be gotten rid of I love love love them. I just think I should not have them if their soooo toxic because i have dogs that do like to eat grass and I would go into a coma of sadness if one was to die over a leaf or two. I just wanted to know if they were really that bad.

I have dogs and oleanders too and I have never had a problem. The most my dogs mess with are dragon fruit cacti.

I have dogs and one oleander and they never bother it. The devil dog seems to know what she can mess with and what she can't. She used to unpot all my other plants and dig them up but she doesn't mess with the oleander or the brugs. They are smarter than most people. As long as you don't leave the cuttings lying around on the ground if you prune it I don't think they would bother it. If its dried out they might would play fetch with it so I keep any trimmings cleaned up. Lucy and I were just discussing how to propagate them since I would like to have more but they are expensive for some reason so I will try and root some cuttings of mine. She says they root easily.

If we got rid of all the plants that are poisonous, our yards would be bare...since I have moved south, nearly every plant I buy then look up the care requirements for says it is poisonous. Elephant ear, golden dewdrop, oleander,poinsettia, etc. etc. I always tried to teach my children not to eat any plants at all unless a trusted adult told them it was safe...
