finally orchid gods smiling on me!

No more crying and moaning for me! The orchid gods have finally forgiven me for whatever offense I had committed. I went to Lowe's this morning for sprinkler supplies and just couldn't help quickly scanning the orchids. There to my surprise, in a bag no less!, was a $40 orchid that's been on my wish list for $11.99!!!! I thought I had to be reading it wrong, I couldn't believe it. A dgmra in a bag at Lowe's, who'da thunk it? And it was in great shape, about a foot tall no less.

So I come home and grab the mail and there's a check from the grandparents of that kid who scammed me for $60!

I'm smiling again!

Lucky, lucky you! That plant is one of the most beautiful plants I had in my collection. It's easy to grow and easy to bloom. Nice going!

Congratulations!

Pssst: Don't use Orchids Limited as your price guide! That vendor is outrageously expensive, though quite often you get the quality that you're paying for. Dgmra are no more expensive than other oncidium intergenerics (lowes orchids has seedling sized winter wonderlands on sale for $4). That $40 is just a larger plant from an expensive nursery. :)

taunia, i was going to reply to your original post but i thought i would give it a day or two just to see how you were doing. i kind of figured that your initial reaction was one of profound grief, the worst you have ever felt. i can SO relate. it will soon be 3 years since my husband was taken from me. i didn't actually hate God but oh how i questioned him! gary and i had a fairytale life, in the 11 years we were together, we had nothing but happy, blissful days. neither of us ever said a cross word to the other. we spent most of our time together, rarely were we apart. we were literally each others "other half". neither of us felt complete unless we were in the same room. over time, my grief hasn't lessened. it has only become "different". i am more tolerant of myself and others. i let myself cry when i need to but i have also let myself go with raucous laughter when i remember some of the silly things gary would do. memories are what we have. we also have lives to lead and i choose to lead my life in a way that would make gary proud of me. i bend over backwards and work my fingers to the bone to take care of my part of the farm where we shared our lives. flowers, mowing, taking care of the horses, mending fence, keeping bird feeders filled, fountains clean and in working order...i could go on and on and on. these are all things we did together. in my mind, we still do them together. everywhere i look out here, i see him in the things he built and cared for. it used to make me so angry and hurt when people would ask me if i am dating yet. it would send me into crying jags i didn't think would ever stop. often, i wished i could go to sleep and never wake up. now, when i am asked that silly question, my reply is that i had the best there ever was, why would i want to settle for anything else? that usually shuts people up. ;) i don't mean to turn this into something about "me", just wanted you to know you are not alone. everything you are going through is normal. as normal as normal can be at this place in your life. it WILL get better, i promise. it will just take a tincture of time. there will be rough spots, some rougher than others but some day, you will be able to look back at life with your husband and you will smile instead of cry. when that time comes, it will be like the weight of an elephant herd lifted off your shoulders. there will be setbacks, many, but they will become fewer and farther between. one day, you will wake up and realize how very lucky you were to have shared your life with a wonderful man. many people are not as lucky as we. always remember...death leaves a heartache no one can heal. love leaves a memory no one can steal. Aha, in his mind, you still looked like the girl you were in school and it was a shock to him that you had actually aged like everyone else. That's no excuse, I know. I am dreading my 40th reunion that is coming up in the fall for just the same reason. One of my friends confided that a male classmate wanted to see pictures of me from our last friend's weekend because he had had a crush on me since high school. I don't remember EVER talking to the guy. Well, I've gained 60 pounds since high school, have bags under my eyes, and a chicken neck, not to mention gray hair. I guess I'll just have to show up and make him grateful he married someone else. lol

Oakley also asked about growing tips. ... I do the same as Annie - more or less, depending on how lazy I'm feeling. I put them in the sink twice a month and let the water run through. If I forget to give them a good soaking then I'll just place a couple ice cubes in the pot and let them melt. I fertilize them with a weak solution of Orchid fertilizer while they're sitting in the sink. I try to mist them once or twice a week. Mine are on a plant stand in a bay window in the kitchen which has an eastern exposure. When the phalaenopsis flowers are done blooming I cut the stem back to 3 nodes to see if it will bloom again, but only if the stem looks healthy. These are also from from last summer - you can see the Endless Summer hydrangeas in the background. This orange orchid is really vigorous and blooms 2 or 3 times a year on different stalks. Most of the other ones bloom once a year but the flowers may last for 3 months.

Carolyn and Merry, after reading the book mentioned above it appears that the court tried to 'get her' on a charge of spying. The German trial dealt with over 80 people in one day and no prisoners had been allowed to be seen by a defence lawyer. None of the court justices spoke French, the prisoners didn't speak German. Nurse Cavell spoke only French and a single interpreter was able to go from French to German but none of the prisoners or the defence members were allowed to read/check the German written statements taken at the time of arrest. At the time the only person in authority to 'help' EC was the head of the neutral US Legation in Brussels (representing UK affairs) who suffered from a delicate constitution and had taken to his bed. Much hand-wringing throughout Europe but little practical help and (in hindsight) only a day in which to do it. After the very speedy execution and burial the German General who had passed the sentence was hastily 'recalled' by the Kaiser and the US Head of Legation sent back to DC for 'recuperation'. I am not a lawyer but wonder at the term traitor in this context. I'm sure one of you knows if you can be a traitor in the country in which you are working, that has been overrun by another power. So EC though English, working in Belgium for all nationalities is a traitor to the invaders . . . very complicated. Had the Geneva Convention been introduced by WWI? Perhaps I'd better look it up myself.

Aaaand, the $60 is yours because you called the kid's grandfather! So, the orchid gods just sent you about $85. for orchids, between the $60 and whatever you saved at Lowe's.

Now that you are again on the good side of OG (Orchid God), you must try to stay there. A small sacrifice would be in order, a goat maybe, at least a chicken.

Sometimes OG giveth, sometimes OG taketh, I'm glad things are well with you.

I agree with TERPGUY, never use Orchids Limited a price guide. They are very, very expensive. Most of their plants are 3x's the price of other vendors.

What does it mean for it to be in a bag? Does this refer to the way they have it potted up?

Bag orchids are what we refer to when the orchid comes from Lowes and are in a pot and then put in a plastic bag. They are cheaply priced orchids. Sometimes they are young and sometimes they are mature and in sheath. I buy vanda bag orchids whenever I get a chance. It takes a few years to bloom them but they only cost around $13 for the vandas.
Catts. may be even cheaper depending on the size. The trick is to buy them not to long after they arrive. These orchids do not get watered as they are in a closed plastic bag.

Interesting. I've never seen anything like that up here. Lowes recently starting invading, so maybe I'll try to check it out. Any idea why they put them in the plastic bags? Are they better than the HD orchids, which seem to rarely (if ever) come with a tag?

Baggie babies have been sold mostly by chain stores forever. I remember buying mostly species in bags in Sears back in the late 1960s.

Here at our Lowes, we have lots of bagged hybrids -- Onc intergenerics, Cattleyas, Vanda -- and some species, B. nodosa, Angraecum sesquipidale, Encyclias, etc., for the low price of about $12

They usually aren't available here in Albany, N.Y. I did see a couple when a new Lowes just opened. I go to Myrtel Beach, S.C. twice a year in May and Sept. You wouldn't expect to find them in the tourist area and yet two of the 4 stores carries them. Like I said the trick is to find them before they have been in the stores for a month or two. In May I hit the jack pot, both Lowes had a good supply of vanda bag orchids. I think between the two stores I bought maybe 12. I soaked them two or three times a day in my cooler while away and then put them in the greenhouse with spanish moss around them once home. They are all doing great. My first vanda bag orchid just bloomed this year. I figure if I buy at least a couple each year then I'll have a couple of new ones blooming each year.
