I'm Dreaming of Moss Beach,CA

When it gets hot here in the valley, We head on to the coast. Half Moon Bay and Moss Beach. The beach is about 20 miles south of SF and about 30 miles north of us. Moss beach is secluded and craggy but that's how we like it.

A bonus of Moss Beach is that for some reason, fresh kelp is deposited on the beach all the time. When I had my compost pile we would fill a few garbage bags and bring it home. It is amazing how quickly kelp is composted.

What beautiful scenery; is it usually/always cooler there?

What do I dream about when it gets hot? Clear blue skies and crisp, cold days; even snow on the ground would be a plus. This summer's weather has really been a downer for me; I don't think of myself as a complainer, but I'll really be glad when we won't need the A/C, anymore. However, I'm truly grateful for it and consider it a necessity-- and a blessing, too.

mwheel, yes it is usually cooler on the coast, but it is also more foggy than the valley. I prefer to live here and visit the "fog" when the heat gets bad.

Hi neohippie, I think you visited one of my threads with photos of my raised beds. I'm not sure which one, but you can look at the attached link to get an idea of what I'm talking about. I just got back into gardening last year. The wife and I had spent a few summers in Colorado escaping the Texas heat. We decided to stay home last summer and our daughter said she wanted me to start growing some of those great tomatoes I used to grow. For years as we moved around, I was a sometimes container gardener and a sometimes raised bed gardener. I went back to raised bed gardening because it is so easy to get a crop in the ground without a lot of soil prep. and without a lot of highly technical know how. I live about sixty miles north of Dallas. We have a hard red clay soil base. I put my first two beds in at the end of a draught last year. The ground was so hard that we couldn't even drill into the clay with a large tractor mounted drill. I built the first two beds in less than a day, added dirt mixed with composted manure, sphagnum peat moss, sand (for looseness) and some commercial 10-10-10 fertilizer. I didn't do anything to the base soil other than turn it over with a shovel and pick to mix in the new dirt. I filled the new beds almost to the top knowing that it would settle a lot. I planted my plants the next day. My family and friends enjoyed tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash all summer. I don't know what part of Central Texas you live in, but in North Texas; we do have a spring and fall growing season. My garden just hangs on without dieing during the hottest part of the summer and then recovers at summers end and produces until the first frost. I think they have to replant for the fall season in the Houston area because the heat and humidity is so intense. I think you can at least get a fall crop planted if you want to. It is set to go off every night for ten minutes and I only have it turned on when we're not getting rain. From what you're saying, could this be a lot of my problem? Ding, we have a winner! It certainly isn't all of the issue, but it's causing some of it. Watering like that encourages weeds to sprout because seeds like to be damped down daily. This year, try playing it more by ear. Water the grass for an hour or so (set out a tuna can to measure the actual amount of watering) only when it starts to wilt. That'll discourage weeds and encourage good strong roots on the grass. What would happen if I spray all the dandelions down with vinegar? Would I have a kazillion brown spots in my lawn? Forever? Temporarily, yes. What happens over the long term depends on the lawn. Fescue and ryegrass don't spread very much, so the hole should be reseeded. Kentucky bluegrass can spread about the size of a baseball per season so it takes care of its own small holes (it goes faster if well-fed). Right now I must have a thousand small brown dead holes in the lawn. The old dead stuff will drop off and disappear in a week or three, and the bluegrass will fill it in by the end of May with no trouble.

Its a little young to plant in ground. You might be better off having a potted backup,a second coco. Its in full sun...but they need a lot of warmth..warm soils. The NBC has for years thrived on that asphalt and concrete AND brick wall all boosting temps for a warmer growing season..maybe near all year. SO much room for experiment...even putting black plastic around it..mesh maybe,too absorb warmth. Here in 10a bay area? 10f too cold at night in winter..and that's just average. Mid 30's for a week or two per winter take them out even if no frost.

Boy do I love those gallery walls. I'm learning to paint tropical landscapes and seascapes even though I'm not fond of painting this type of art (because I'm not good at it yet). It would look cool to do a wall of it though in different techniques and tones. Right now my sky, water and tree's are in the advances stage while my bushes and sea grapes look amateur. I can see a wall of it down the road. Thanks for sharing and inspiring!

Beautiful beaches. Envy, no no, not supposed to do that, but I do wish we had a kelp beach nearby.

My mind and body sort of slow down in direct relation to the heat; but when I do manage to bestir myself sufficiently, I dream of cool breezes on the mountaintop ~ while sitting on the porch of my dream-house, or swimming at the beach when the water temperature is only 75*, or having the A/C set to 70* ~ DH loves the heat so the house A/C is usually set to 80 or 83 which is not nearly cool enough to suit me, lol. I've also been known to dream of being slim enough to guilt-free gulp triple-scoop ice cream cones of fudge-chocolate or raspberry sherbet or even old-fashioned butter pecan (the creamy kinds that have a zillion calories in every bite).

don, we really are twins. I too miss Monterey, took over your watch '72-'77. I don't even have to be hot to dream and then visit Half Moon and Monterey; they're always in the forefront of my mind.

We,ve been visiting Monterey for the past 40 years or so. And it is one place that does not change much. Yes, some of the shops and restaurants have changed, there is at least one farm that has moved from cows to alpaca, there are some new condos,the artist colony is still there and there are some galleries left.
On the whole they have kept the developers at bay, and the view from the scenic route is as spectacular as ever.
I think this is one place we can go "home again".

meldy, I know what you mean about the ice cream, I've managed to thru a quart of prailines(sp) and cream in a week. It was worth the calories.
