PLEASE STAY SAFE!

We're hearing some very unsettling news from our friends down South. One friend, in N.O., has been asked to be part of the emergency team and stay behind. Officials are fearing really bad things behind the storm. We're begging him to send his family up here for some "late summer sight-seeing."

Other friends from down South have made some very unsettling observations in the last few days. One went to a sporting goods store for emergency supplies and counted 15 people buying AR-15s while he waited for assistance. He said he noticed every store he went to had sold out of its entire ammo supply. I hope I'm hearing only very skewed things.

My heart goes out to everyone down there... so many are still dealing with PTSD from Katrina, so I know this is going to be a difficult period.

Wanda and all others in the path of Gustav (& Hannah, for that matter!): please be safe. You're in my thoughts...

I think everyone is taking this one seriously & following the "it's better to be safe than sorry" train of thought. Every last living hotel room here & in Longview have already been booked & we're making plans for shelters in case of the worst. I just checked the NOAA site & they're predicting the most likely scenario for it to be a category 1 or 2 storm, which, I guess is good news. But anything can happen to it when it's over open waters in the Gulf.

Everone is ok. They are heading out to my neices house with chain saws and trucks to try and gain access to the trailer and save what belongings they are able to get to. The roof peeled off the room they were in and collapsed into the back half of the house and they got the kids out thank god and were able to get next door until the storm abated. They made it to Moms house last night after trying several routes and some of the grandsons came to help clear trees and debris this morning but decided to go first out there and see if they can get in to save some of Brandy's and the kids belongings. Baton Rouge is a mess. They had to drive thru parking lots and over medians to avoid downed trees and cut some and pull them out of the way to get to my Mothers so I imagine it will take them most of the day to make their way to Brandy's house and get some of her things out since she lives out in the country which means even more trees. God must have been watching over them. Thank you all for your prayers. They will be out of power for a long time. Poles ripped out of the ground all over the place. I was able to send money before the storm hit to buy extra gas for the generators and provisions so thank goodness for that too. All the stores and gas stations have no power or gas for that matter. My other sister in Mississipi lost her greenhouse and Mom and Laura lost most of their plants but they can be replaced so all is good.

'garlic lowers the ph level of the products' I'm confused ... isn't lowering the pH level what we want? Lower the pH, raise the acidity? Or do I have it backwards. I make my refrigerator garlic dills a quart or two at a time and they last two months at the most. I've used the same process for green tomato wedges. When I can no longer get pickling cukes or green tomatoes ... I make frequent visits to my rather distant deli. (They're fermented in the closed jar at room temp for seven days -- flipped daily -- and then refrigerated.) On the subject of creating a seal: when I used to do open kettle, I rarely had a jar that didn't "ping" and go concave as it cooled. When I BWB, I know that air is driven out, but is the seal created as the jar cools (and pings) or earlier in the processing? My sweet pickles are mostly freezer pickles. Guess I'd better check that out too. And then there are my Limed Pickles I didn't do any canning last year because I couldn't get decent cukes or tomatoes. Looks like I won't do much this year because all the recipes I like are now considered risky. I'd say better safe than sorry ... but with the reports I keep hearing about commericial food processing and the lack of funds available for inspection or testing, you have to wonder is anything truly "safe". Guess we just have to do risk assessment and make a determination of our risk tolerance. Which is tough when someone else could be the one who suffers.

Hi I'm getting terrific gusts and frequent downpours and I'm over 600 milea away lol. This right after the record setting downpours of Fay. interesting how the level of Okeechobee was at historic lows due to the record drought. and now is setting at 10 year averages.in less than a week!! The decision to lower the water level will come today. Gustav is going to have terrific unexpected effect and Hanna at the very least is going to drop a lot of water. I know for a fact that my soil can handle 20 inches of rain in 24 hours. i only got 8 in 3 hours from Fay while areas north got up to 30 inches. Noted that the engineers are saying that they doubtful the levees in N.Orleans can tolerate a direct impact .I pray they don't experience a repeat of Katrina Here they are fairly confident the Lake O can handle up to 19 feet of course depending on the strength and duration of the winds. all that would be required is around 10 inches in 24 hours in the right spot. Imagine 75 square miles of water coming at you all at once?? Good luck to all those in the path of G Gee there;s still 3 more months of season lol gary

Our GC had a wonderful exercise for us. His assignment even before we met was to have DH & me write out our top 20 items/ideas for the house (in order of importance). We did this seperarately w/o knowing each other's top 20. We then brought this list to GC on our first meeting. This enabled him to get the big picture. We also took these lists to the architect. Along with this list, was a photo of what we desired & a layout we thought we liked. As the process has developed, all of our smaller, nitpicky items have come out. GC has appreciated the thought process that I've put into it all. He said it has made everything move smoothly. In the end, I will have less daily choices to make. Although I did SO much research prior to all of our meetings, I have welcomed GC's ideas & knowledge, as well. Afterall, we are hiring him for his skills, knowledge, & expertise. He has been doing this 30+ years & I have only just recently begun this process. I definitely would not go into this seeming like a total know-it-all or you will make GC's life quite unpleasant. Also, in all honesty, about 90% of our desires for our home, GC had already planned for, so I would really be looking for the best GC you can find.

Thanks for all your positive thoughts.

Jaz, This tracker has been very helpful. I have checked it quite often.

So far, things are going well.
We decided to stay home when it was predicted to go more west.

Lots of rain and 50-60 mph winds at this point.
A couple of limbs down.
No interruption of power.

Please continue to keep all those in the path of this storm in your thoughts and prayers.

I'm glad that the storm was less powerful than they feared. It's starting to rain here now & we're looking at about 10" in the next three days. Sort of a PITA for us, but nothing serious.

So glad Gustav has gone down to Tropical Storm status! And that y'all are doing okay.

Keeping my eye on Hannah... if she curves just a bit, we in the mid-Atlantic may see her up close.
