Are you kidding?!?!?!?!? Scooping litter pans daily has to be the dirtiest household chore around here followed closely by cleaing up hair ball vomit. Although i do hate to clean the fridge too but at least its not something i do or consider doing often.

LOL, defrosting doesn't faze me. And I presently live with a 24 CF "frostless" and and 8 CF "frostless". The big one is suffering from age, evidenced by frosting up its drainage tube which in turn will cause a niagra-sized sheet of ice up and down the back wall. When defrosting becomes a monthly chore instead of quarterly, I'll replace it.

My mum always made charts --enter what is put in, make circles for each package, and then cross off what is taken out; taped to the freezer door along with a pencil so there's no excuse for not updating immediately. I did this for ages -the hard part is writing up the first chart- but it doesn't work if DH ignores it. Sigh. At least he does write on the grocery list when the last of anything is used.

If #2 is in a household of careless males, it's definitely my number one candidate for yeeuck.

I'm lucky on the oven - have a great one that cleans itself with high heat. I do swipe immediately any spills, but that's not a big deal. Ah, I guess pulling out the refrig and the freezer to clean under them is my second yuck. First they have to be emptied both inside and off the top, then I have to ask someone to help move them -they're on sliders but those aren't all that good- then I have to get the tray out and clean it, then dust all the oily, grimy, dusty, cobwebby coils and motor parts, THEN the joy of scrubbing the floor. And just where all that black yukky stuff on the floor comes from is a mystery. Well, of course one feels very accomplished once everything is back to normal. It just doesn't *look* as though you spent any time cleaning.
'Hi honey, whatcha been doing?' "Oh, I just finished cleaning the floor under the fridge." 'Oh. Yeah?' And the dubiousness drips simply off his voice.

Disgusting but necessary job? Too many to count. Cleaning the cat box, Cleaning up thew hairballs the cats barf up, cleaning the toilet, cleaning the stuff stored on top of the kitchen cabinets that collect kitchen grease.....Shall I go on?

OK, here's a horrid one... Izzy is a great example of the Pudelpointer breed. Mostly, this is a good thing, as she doesn't shed, and doesn't need haircuts (I pluck her a couple times a year, and bathe her with minimal trouble). But one of the things that makes her a great example of her breed are her "furnishings" which is a hairy fringe on her muzzle, eyebrows, legs, and tail. Oh, and all around her "hoo-ha." Mostly, these are beautiful, but the ones around the base of her tail and her genital region... well they have a tendency to trap stuff I don't want trapped, if ya know what I mean, so I trim that stuff. This is a miserable job, as the dog tends to fight me on grooming in general... now imagine trying to flip her over, comb out her tender bits, and trim this area. She looks at me like I'm insane and avoids me for hours afterwards! Soooo, I confess it's been a while since she got her "special" haircut.

So a couple weeks ago, my parents came to town and stayed with me. Now my parents are not uptight, and nobody is ever going to give either of them a house-cleaning medal or anything, but I like to create the illusion, while they're here, that they raised me right, and I am the head of a respectably-run home. So I was a bit miffed when, in less than 60 seconds after their arrival, Izzy ran across my kitchen floor, stopped dead, sat, skidded, and left a streak. Seems she'd gotten some burrs in the region of her tender bits, and some fecal matter had gotten trapped in the process. Intervention was desperately required.

So I hugged my hellos, calmly cleaned the spot on the floor, grabbed a burr comb, a bucket of soapy water, a pair of scissors, and a roll of paper towels, and cheerily called Izzy out into the yard and excused myself to address the situation. I tried to be nonchalant about it, but my parents were having a pretty good laugh at my expense when I got back in the house.

And that is the most disgusting, but necessary thing I've had to do in a while. Though cleaning the yard in the springtime after a winter of dog poo accumulating under the snow is a close second.

I strongly dislike cleaning toilets, but I feel a little better about it since I started using a black light. I use it to get a better handle on where the mess really is... It's a little CSI-esque, but it's the only way I know of to ensure the facilities do actually get reasonably clean...

Hard to beat that dogusting story. We have been working all summer getting my freezer empty to defrost. We started out with tweleve pies but now we are down to two. DH doesn't usually like to help with cleaning chores but he is really pitching in on this one. I found some packages of peaches frozen 6 years ago down at the bottom but when I thawed them they were still quite tastey. I figure in another month I will be able to fit all the stuff in the large cooler and the refrigerator freezer. I am not at all organized but I figure once every eight years it probably should be done!

Well so far, I think Michelle gets the medal. I love that black light inspection. That is too good, and somehow I can see Michelle doing it. Very, very ingenious.

I forgot about my bi-weekly cat enemas for his megacolon. I don't find that disgusting, but prolly should. He used to run afterwards, so I couldn't get a handle on the results, but it ceased to be fun for him when I quit chasing him. Now, if it doesn't work, he actually comes looking me up for another treatment.

As for refrigerator tops, I read somewhere a long time ago, one can tell how good a housekeeper a person is, by just discretely looking at the top of their fridge. LOL. So, I do when I am in other peoples homes. Here is the zinger, I really don't care, but I think I want to prove that theory right or wrong. And, that is the one place in my house liable to be very clean.

As for clean homes, when my first husband got shipped off for his tour in Vietnam, we were living in Officer's housing on a military base. I was told there was no way on earth a person could clean their homes well enough to pass the inspection they give before they clear you from your obligations after living in one of those units. A friend of mine mentioned how hard it must've been living in military quarters because she imagined they'd be so "dirty". I nearly choked when she said that. They put on a white glove and ran their hands over the cooking vents and fans above the stove. LOL. If they did that to one of my stoves now, they'd call the board of health.

I'm lucky...DH went to military school and later served in Army for 2 years so is fussy about bathroom and keeps it tidy. He insisted my son do the same (they shared a bathroom) and my DIL is now grateful!

As to freezer. I do try and keep inventory of large items like roasts and steaks, homemade broths and sauces, but I always have little "undocumented" bags of chopped onions/garlic/peppers or mushrooms or nuts and herb butters dropping out of overcrowded door shelves.

I know the experts say you waste money buying service contracts but I pay about $100 per year to GE so I just call when I have that "ice in bottom of freezer" or sometimes a little leak from blocked drain problem...I call about twice a year and he cleans/checks it all out, relevels (important for proper door seal) and I think it's well worth it. The yearly price rises with age of appliance and I don't have service for other appliances but a freezer/refrigerator you can't do without or risk losing hundreds of dollars in food. When I lost one to lightning a few years ago the insurance co. mentioned sending appraiser (further delay for replacement check) until I faxed the GE serviceman's diagnosis and they accepted it without question.

Top of fridge/freezer is above eyelevel and I keep a wire rack of cereal. crackers, tacoshells, etc. up there...but it does get cleaned off now and then.

Nastiest job is cleaning all the gunk out of the saucers under my tropical plants when they go outside for the summer. I have over 100 trays and plates and they all need scrubbing before going in DW. Then I run the DW empty at least once to be sure it's clean!

If it is in the house it is a disgusting but necessary job. Give me the nice clean organic garden dirt outside everytime and i'm happy.

Did you guys really have to bring up the subject of defrosting freezers!!!!! I'd forgot i've got to do mine before winter too. YUK

The top of my frig is covered with potholders,kitchen towels and washcloths. It' not at my eye level but i clean it once in awhile.

Now i've a secret to confess that i tell very few people. So now the whole world will know.
My DD insisted that i get someone to come in and do some of my housework for me. So once a week a lady comes in and does things that are hard for me to do and also does the yucky bathroom and floors for me and other cleaning chores as they come up but i still do stuff in between times. No one can polish my furniture like i want it or my what-nots. Nobody but nobody messes around in my computer-craft room.LOL And dang it all i've got to do my freezer.

Vivkie, It's hardly a shameful secret that you have a cleaning service. I wish I had my cleaning woman back! However, when I retired & we moved to a smaller house, I thought that surely, it wouldn't be too hard to keep this place clean - HA! IMO, if you can afford to have anyone do the jobs you don't like to do - go for it.

My most disgusting jobs are outside, one is cleaning the hen-house in early fall. It looks like a haunted house, draped with dust-laden cobwebs, I keep thinking they really are a fire-hazard, but I do't have any flies around the chicken-house. Anyway, because of the extreme dryness I wear a dust-mask and a hat (maybe there are spiders living in some of those webs) and really old clothing. Once the job is done and fresh shaving are put into place, it makes me feel good that it's done.
An occasional disgusting job has to do with carrion, generally some dead catfish, probably dropped by an osprey, rotting at the edge of the pond, one can only hope disposal is all that's needed, at worst it includes washing a dog that had rolled in it.

Vickie, I have a household helper and no apologies here. She's a jewel who does most of my shopping for groceries and household needs since we no longer drive, plus drives us to doctor/dentist appts. She cleans like a maniac, and best of all she loves gardening and willingly helps me repot and move containers around, including those 100 tropicals which must come back inside this fall.

She's been with me since my son was small...about 37 years...neither of us can remember exactly. Through the years when we both worked I depended on her totally. Now that we're older and retired she is more necessary than ever, also that our son isn't worried about us. He and his wife have 3 children and full time jobs...I like having help so he doesn't feel required very often to pitch in. josh

Solution for that Top of the Fridge Ordeal. It really does collect a gunky oily mess, doesn't it!!

Roll out anything, a sheet of newspaper, plastic wrap, freezer paper, old place mats.....anything, from edge to edge. You can even tape it down in the back if you want to. Unless you have really tall people in your house, it won't be seen. Then, when you get the urge to clean, take it off. What's left is a breeze to wipe up.

I've even seen one with a bright colored tablecloth folded on top. I liked that one, I just don't have a spare cloth. I may even give up and buy a piece of cloth and cut it down to just the right size. Put fringe on the sides or something.

Agnes, that's what I do with the top of the kitchen cabinets, which, IMO, get even more coated with gunk than the top of the fridge. I lay down newspapers & then when I next go to clean up there, I can just throw the old newspapers out & lay down new ones.
