#1 is convenience*, #2 is what looks best within the constraints of #1.

* convenience means to me primarily a cut that doesn't require "product" and doesn't take more than 10 minutes to style.

I grow mine long, because it's easier for the most part to pull it back or wrap it up in a roll in an emergency for dress-up. You reminded me, I have a long swatch of it the hairdresser cut off for me to donate. It's still sitting up in a dresser drawer upstairs. This shall be the second time I've done this. This shall also likely be the last time I do it, as I'm starting to grey and the charity to whom I donate hair doesn't accept grey or dyed hair. That lets out a lot of potential donors, as I am likely in the minority in that I don't dye or tint my hair.

I guess I just wear it like this because it feels "right" on me. It's very, very thick, but the hair shafts themselves are very, very fine. It's a nice ritual at bedtime to brush it and let it down. I feel very nekkid without hair and I've tried it extremely short. It has a mind of its own and when shorter is high upkeep with gels and such or it sticks out like cotton tufting.

I can't honestly say I put any *value* on my hair - or my fingernails, which are a similar substance. When I was younger, I rather liked it's odd color (very dark brown but with scattered strands of auburn and red gold). It was kept long when I was a child (sit-on braids); very short in my 20's; mid-length during my 30's; very short in my 40's and then I let it grow -- a private rebellion against hairdressers that overcharged, didn't keep appointments, and often seemed to feel it was more important to talk to their buddies than to pay attention to doing my hair ~ in spite of hefty tips. Frankly, #2 was the straw that broke this camel's back. I actually prefer the ease of caring for short hair, and have been considering jumping into the haircare pool again... but, oh how I hate to wait and wait and wait for the stylist to finish her prior customer/s. Not mention trying to find one with the skill to do a suitable cut.

Actually, I find this one of the more irritating Biblical quotes. Nature's idea is to grow hair [not to cut it] until the age is reached when hair won't grow. And Nature certainly doesn't deal with attitudes such as "disgrace"... I suspect this was originally written by a very controlling and domineering male who didn't want the bother of caring for his own long hair, but but felt self-justified in declaring that women *should*, probably because in his experience "they always had" long hair.

maybe, but that was the part I related to. I glory in my long hair and feel naked without it. Just my interpretation. I'm not shamed, just "less dressed" ;)

I got rid of my long hair several years ago. It's just too hot here in the summer & I can't stand it on the back of my neck or some stray piece falling out of the barret or pony tail holder & falling into my face. Right now I've got a wash & go "do." I love it!

I love it. Like Andie - it's a wash & go. Haven't used a brush or comb or styling product in a year.

Short it is convenient. It never looks lovely but it seldom looks bad. Also it is much nicer for diving to have hair so short that it doesn't have to be cleared out from under your mask.

I used to always tell my hairdresser I didn't want to look like I'd just had my hair "done" but they never listened...plus I hated spending the time and dollars. My hair has been grey since my twenties and has enough natural curl that for years now I've cut it myself...the curl disguises any unevenness. Usually keep it very short but it varies...sometimes it's collar length in winter.

Do hair and nails grow faster in summer or maybe as you grow older? My fingernails especially seem to need constant filing and it's definitely getting harder to keep my toes trimmed! josh

Short and curly, I call mine wash an wear. Has lots of white mixed with the dark brown. I have to get perms ever so often. I've found that hairdressers who work out of their homes are the only ones who can do my lil ole ladys hair. Don't know why unless they're usually,almost lil ole ladys too.
I wore my hair sholder length till i was in my 40,s. Wore it in a beehive in the early 60,s and a pageboy before that.

meldy, you must be a long lost relative. both my DD,s have your coloring of hair and it is unique.I love to see them in the sunshine.

Vickie ~ it took me ages to learn to deliberately choose 'red-head' colors in clothing - after all, my hair was brown when *in* the store; but some colors just clash horribly when out in natural light.

Wash and wear hair. *That's* what I want. Know anyone who can cut wavy hair that way?

Short, short, short. It was already getting too long when I saw Di and Jan last week, and I've had a good two inches removed since then. I've colored it, too. Just because I'm older than DH doesn't mean that I have to look the part!

I used to wear it as long as it would grow. For me, that was about two inches below the shoulder before breakage would make it look scraggly. When I was slim, I thought it a glorious mane. But by the time I met DH, age, anti-depressants and inactivity had taken their toll, and my face was rounder than it had been in my youth. He convinced me that the hair was now just "hiding my face," and should be cut away to reveal what was behind it. He loves it and my self-esteem has taken a wonderful upturn from all the compliments he gives me.

That's my only problem with short hair - I have to get it cut about every three weeks as it really grows fast.

And Meldy, the secret to wash & go is to have a good person at the hairdressers who really knows how to cut hair. A bad cut with short hair is really awful.

I got fed up with having my hair cut. Even paying an arm and a leg doesn't insure one will receive a competent cut. I do a better job with my handy-dandy Robocut and me and DH have saved a fortune in haircut fees and tips. Seriously.

Though I do miss the head massage they give at the esthetician's school I used to frequent...

I was also thinking that hair is one body part that might have a little more staying power. Think of the early disappointment and/or need for expensive plastic surgery if, say, perky boobs were your glory, or made you feel really you.

I went for a haircut last weekend. Decided that I was going to get it ALL chopped off. I was thinking whatever was the equivalent of a flat top (or, in these parts, a "high-n-tight"), basically an inch on the top and that's it. Then, because of the impending interview, I relented and decided upon something short but professional in a girlie way. It would have been over 10 inches and I was going to donate it to Locks of Love. I walked into the salon and got my favorite girl right away. I was in the chair describing what I wanted, watching her face for signs of shock and horror, when all of a sudden the elderly lady in the next chair over shouts "NO!" We turned to look at her, she was half way out of the chair, and she said "if you cut off all her hair, I'm leaving here and never coming back! And you can bet I'll tell all my friends, too!" We were all stunned. I looked at my hair dresser, she looked at me and shrugged her shoulders. I got as far as saying "But, Ma'am" and she cut me off with "you have the most gorgeous hair...the color is like honey mixed with strawberry jam...you can't possibly want to cut it all off!" She then proceeds to tell my hair dresser to "trim off a couple inches, but not too short". So, that's what she did, under the watchful eye of this little old lady. When I was done, this lady just about had tears in her eyes and kept touching it and telling me how beautiful it was. I probably should have thought it was freaky (I kinda do now), but it was just the self confidence boost I needed. Nothing changed except for 3 inches in length, but I felt like a million bucks!

That biblical passage crosses my mind a lot, too, Rob. Especially when soldiers or one of my Project Managers ask me if I want one of their ball caps that promote their unit or equipment. I always tell them I don't need a hat, God gave me hair...

Long. Same hair style for almost 30 years. Parted in middle rolled back on each side,clipped, braided and then coiled into a bun. If it was never in style it never goes out. It has changed from blond to brown (dang pregnancies) and now is starting to grey. I was once on the front page of the local paper in a crowd scene. Everyone recogniized me even though my back was to the camara. But this summer I had some neck problems. And I am thinking maybe I ought whack it all off as it is very heavy.
