Native South Florida Orchids

Anyone know of legitimate sources of native south florida orchids. I want to grow them and native bromeliads on neighborhood trees to help repopulate the are and look nice. I'd like to get ahold of cyrtopodium punctata, ghost orchid, and some of the native vanillas (phaentha, the leafless vine varieties). I've had no luck, and i did find ghost orchid but pricey.

Also any advice for affixing them to trees outside? I've done it, but tricks would be nice. I have pond apple, mahogany, indian almond, mango, palms, jackfruit, avocado, etc., at my house.

Certainly legitimate (not wild collected) line bred and i've found it to be easy to grow and a delight.
Forget about the Ghost Orchid.

Check with some of the local O societies ,not only for sources but legal requirements . There are over 40 species and many come under CITES regs Will warn you that most are not nearly as impressive as the tropicals lol

another shrub i came upon browsing thur my pics: carissa macrocarpa, common name is natal plum. it has beautiful smell. normally it has thorns and can be grown as shrub/tree or hedge. but there are dwarf varieties that are also thornless - it should be fairly easy to find. it's drought resistant and grows in the sun. the leaves are very fleshy and should withstand the wind well. plus it bears edible fruit similar in taste to sweet cranberry. i think it's quite popular in the gardens. here's pic it untrimmed trailing from the balcony. not a dwarf :) Here is a link that might be useful: floridata on carissa

Go figure.....there are thousands of them here on our property and figured they were common all over Florida. Like I said I have no knowledge of Orchids:) I do like the lil devils though and I would have felt guilty cutting the tree if I knew they were in it. Luckily for me I did not know they were there till the magnolia fell. They are an odd plant...we have huge hickory trees and yet they are not in them at all. They also do not seem to like the water oaks. They do like the magnolias and the who knows how old huge live oaks they are loaded with both them and the resurrection ferns.

solstice98 and others: Here is another great web site- you can get a list of native species for any Florida county- just click on your county from the map: http://www.fnps.org/pages/plants/landscape_plants.php I will post this on the Florida Gardening site so it does not get lost here from the rest of the Florida gardeners. I just moved here recently and have been trying to transform the exotic garden I moved into to mostly native- so far I've been able to attract Green Anoles, Monarch Butterflies, and Zebra Longwing Butterflies- and I live in Miami!

I second Living Color Nursery, just went this weekend. Very nice setup. 21 acres. They also do a good job of labeling the plants. Also have a dedicated "Native" plant area. Flamingo Road Nursery is also really nice. Well designed, focus more on plants, palms and citrus. Not many trees.
