Advice for Kentucky Bluegrass
Comments (18)Well. at the risk of seeming fickle, I have decided to go with the Midnight II, Moonlight and Bedazzled mix used by Turf Toes. Essentially, I was able to convince my wife that going darker was better. She just wants me to move on it and get our lawn back to something other than dirt. At some point, I will post pictures of the renovation. Bestlawn & others, I appreciate all the advice you have given, and I gained not only from this string, but others you have posted in Gardenweb. I have read many - many of them. I used an older list Bestlawn published of a bunch of suppliers, and visited many of their web sites and/or called them (though not all of them). The only two I could find who have all three varieties in sod quality is Steyer farm and Williams Lawn Seed. Steyer called me back but did not have the price in hand - he will Monday, but it only comes in minimum 50lbs. WLS did not have the price Friday but will Monday as well, I do not know about the minimum quantity. Rose Agriseed no longer caries Bedazzled. By the way, they also do not carry Brilliant nor Serene. Also, their Galaxy is not sod quality. I did not want to go with their Galaxy mix as it has Prosperity and I do not want to replace Bedazzled with something darker. My next challenge is finding the mix in sod quality, without having to purchase a large quantity. I probably only need 15 to 20 lbs. I know I could go with non-sod quality from a place such as summitseed.com, but I understand that it may introduce a lot more weeds than sod quality. If I have to, I will go ahead and buy the larger quantity and then try to sell what I do not use. Any idea how long seed is good for, assuming it is kept fairly dry and cool? No matter what, I am purchasing tomorrow 5/16/08. Thank you all again. David...See MorePerennial Ryegrass Getting In My Kentucky Bluegrass
Comments (5)Hard to say, identifying grasses from pics is never easy, and yours aren't the best. There are plenty of websites that can help you with IDing grasses and weeds. Anyway here are the basics of the three cool season grasses (there are some other characteristics that aren't as obvious such as ligule shape and form, rolled or folded leaves in sheath, etc). Tall fescue: Pointed tip, prominent veins, no obvious midrib. Edges are serated, but in turf types it isn't as prominent as in wild types. Perennial rye: Fused speed boat tip, veins visible, dorsal midrib, front side dull, back side shiny. KBG: Boat shaped (canoe) tip, no obvious veins, dorsal midrib, leafs are smooth and soft. Poa triv and poa annua have the characteristics of KBG, but can be highly variable in appearance....See MoreCan I overseed with kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue?
Comments (2)It won't cause any issues but the chances of establishing KBG via overseeding into a mature stand of TTTF are slim. KBG takes a long time to germinate (up to 3 weeks) and it will have a hard time competing for sunlight and resources against the mature fescue. You will also trample all over it when you have to mow by week 2 - the fescue will greatly enjoy all the water and starter fertilizer too. Personally I think it can only be done in one way: apply a double dose of Primo Maxx to the turf one week before seeding, then at seeding time scalp it - cut it as low as your mower will go. Between the PGR and the shock of the low cut that may stunt its growth long enough to establish the KBG....See MoreWhen does kentucky bluegrass become agressive
Comments (5)yard: If I had a boarder I'd charge him rent, even if he does keep my KBG at bay. :) Wrong again manure breath. It derives from the European farming method where they broke up the field with grassy strips called alleys or "boarders" (because the alley was taking up space and food normally allocated for cash crops, like a boarder in the home.) Lol. Good catch daniel. I've corrected it. dchall., I can't say if that would happen everywhere with KBG. I figured, what the heck, I'll try it. If it didn't work, or I didn't like the look, at worse, all I needed to do was replant the strip. Sometimes the local experts know of which they speak. :)...See Moregrass1950
