Now is the time to check Cymbidiums for virus.

Every year around this time I check all my Cymbidiums for virus. The new growths are developing and will show the tell tale Chlorophyll break. With Cattleyas the flowers are the easiest way to tell with their characteristic color break, this is not the case with the Cymbidiums.

I pick up every one, dechaf it, look for bugs and at the same time check for virus. The next time the plant gets a close look is in 6 to 9 months when it blooms. Since I grow in rock, I don't repot unless I want to split the plant or the plant has split the pot. If they are crowded, they get my sympathy but if they want a bigger pot they have to split the old one first.

I found a virused plant yesterday, and promptly gave it away. In my neighborhood this is done by placing an object on the curb. Usually within 12 hours, whether its an old sofa or a plant, it will be gone. Someone got themselves a virused Cymbidium, I hope they know what they are doing, probably not.
