Thirty years of living in Los Angeles and I remember those shakes well. Glad this once seems to have been relatively benign given the size.

news. I am so glad you and Missy are okay.

I remember the shakes! Some of them were pretty scary. There was one in the fifties that was pretty scary, and we lived in our first house, a small house with small rooms. The dresser was just a few feet away from the bed and on it stood the big, heavy mirror, as DH at the time didn't believe in putting holes into the walls.
At any rate, I was lucky that it didn't tip and from then on I don't ever have anything heavy and lethal around my bed!
The last big shake was about 150 miles north of here,I only felt the after-shock, happened to be in my water-bed at the time, don't recommend it.
I think fires are scarier, though

I've been in small shakes, and frankly, they aren't my scene. The Californian climate is great, but I prefer a higher probability of the ground staying firm beneath my feet.

I was surprised that this quake was reported as the strongest since, um...was it Northridge in 1999? Reason for my confusion is that I was in one of those "slow dance" earthquakes in 2002 or 2003 -- the one whose epicenter was near Big Bear. I thought *that* earthquake was about 5.4?

Anyway, it was an almost mesmerizing sensation. I felt like I was in a hammock slowly swinging back and forth.

I gotta tell ya, I'd happily trade all this Midwest humidity for a good, occasional 5.0 or 6.0 shake-me-up. Sweating sux! lol

Don, I'm glad you're OK & that the quake was a minor one. When I used to travel to Northern California on business I got used to the minor shakers. However, I don't think I want to experience a really big one.

I am glad that it was not a big one, but I would think you could do without little ones too.

The only experience I have with quakes is the April 18th 5.2 one in Illinois this year and I live a couple of hundred miles away from there, so felt it just briefly and it did not do any damage here.

I've lived in zones with daily shakes and tremors. You always freeze when it starts and try to make your mind up very quicky how bad it might be so you know where to duck if you need to. It doesn't feel like you'd expect it to in a hard or long one. It's because there is not point of reference standing still.

One of these days perhaps there'll be a more accurate way to forcast the 'big one'.

So glad it wasn't worse. We have tornadoes but usually fair warning that there's a possibility at least... even without the weather channel you can pretty much judge by just the general turbulence of the weather. I don't think I'd like living in real earthquake country where it just "happens" with absolutely no warning. The only earthquake I've experienced was in GA many years ago, very slight tremor I think on Halloween night or the night designated for trick-or-treating which sometimes was changed to a weekend night if the day fell on a weekday. Anyway, son was out annoying neighbors and DH was asleep and neither sensed anything. I was sitting reading and definitely felt it...a little scary but for some reason I didn't think about possible aftershocks or a larger one...which could of course have occurred. Suppose I felt more or less immune from a "big one" since so rare in GA. josh
