De-thatching

Hello. I am on a corner lot oc cul-da-sac so lawn is pretty large. Listed as .40 acres.

I think I have an action plan to get this mess straightened up. It starts with de-thatching. Little did I know when I purchsed a manual thatch rake, just what I was in for! Wow! After about 2 rows I was done for. Filled up 2 large bags quickly.

There is hopefully a better way. About 4 yrs ago I bought one of those "power rake" blade attachments. But all I rmember it doing was basically killing my yard and making a mess. Is this what many of you all use?

Or is the pull behind a tractor rake method preferred? Any of them more effective than the other? Obviously shorter grass would make it a bit easier. Can I go ahead and chop it down? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
