The third partner, Bob Hamilton's special interest is Odontoglosums and their hybrids. At this time of the year, when they are in bloom, it is not safe to go there, a spectacular display. Awesome news. I'm a first-timer and I was sure I'd royally borked something. One thing I did that I also worried about was, when I was separating the seedlings that were growing together in the same peat pellet, I completely immersed the pellet in a bowl of water while gently washing away enough peat to be able to pull the roots apart with minimal damage. In hindsight I worried that the complete immersion like that might've been unwise.

Kate - I think I've had everything that can plague daylilies in the last year -except earwigs. You laid out the main list of plagues in your comment. But I'll add two more: deer and burrowing varmints. I was out spraying deer repellant by the light of the moon last night. And I'm trying to repair damage in my red bed by an unidentified burrowing animal that has dug tunnels straight through the middles of some of my biggest clumps and has also caused a cave-in. I actually saw a groundhog running in the neighbor's ditch two days ago. I guess this could be the culprit. I live in the city, so why am I getting all this wildlife? Debra

It's limited by light and air movement indoors, which affects the plant's tendency to back-bud naturally. Pruning the trunk and branch will force back-budding. What I would do is, move the plant outdoors into dappled or open shade as soon as night temps allow (above 55*F), or move the plant in and out to avoid temps lower than 55*. When you move it outdoors, or just before, prune both trunk and the branch. Also, adequate nutrition (particularly N) plays an important part in natural back-budding, so you should start fertilizing regularly. It's highly unlikely you'll find anything better than Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 as your 'go to' fertilizer for houseplants and likely anything else you might choose to grow, though hibiscus and tomatoes would need a slightly different nutritional supplementation strategy.
