St. Augustine over Septic Tank

I read with interest a couple posts here about the inability of grass to grow over the septic tank. Not to be confused with the drain field which has excellent native turf growing over it, the septic tank is made of concrete and is located approximately 2 feet below ground.

The lawn, a St. Augustine, is watered 2-3 times per week but is dead over the entire area of the septic tank below it. In fact, one need not imagine the coffin shape of the septic just by looking at the perfect square of dead earth.

Other posts mention the ground not being deep enough to retain water, but again this is about 2 feet of soil and is within the sprinkler system reach.

Could it be the gasses that may be permeating through the concrete? Or is the concrete affecting the soil in some way? One post mentioned higher temperature but I'm not detecting any noticeable difference in soil temp.

Thoughts?
