Review and Photos: 2009 North NJ Orchid Show and Sale

This was my second year attending the Northern New Jersey Orchid Society Show and Sale at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. I am sad to say this year's show was a huge disappointment. Now, I'm tempted to say I felt this way because I've now been to much larger orchid shows (SEPOS show at Longwood Gardens) but I wasn't comparing the two. Instead, I was comparing this year's NJ show to last year's NJ show. Sadly, something went wrong this year.

To start, the orchid show displays were much smaller and there were less of them. There was also almost no one there. I planned to go to this show weeks and weeks ago and only found one measley link on the orchid society's webpage. So, they very poorly publicized the show this year. The seller's rooms were also very very small this year- half the size of last year. As such, I didn't find anything to purchase.

Interesting that the photos were mostly Phals. I'm often wondered what would be on display in the Northern parts of the USA.

Recovering from a pitiful small local orchid three day show. I haven't got any pictures and if i do get any they will be posted on the gallery.

I checked out your pics to see if we got any of the same shots. Surprisingly (or maybe not) we really didn't. One of the only things we both got a picture of was that white milt with the peach and pink spots. Also, that pale lavender pink phal that almost looked like a vanda flower. I was happy to see you got the name on that one. I was curious. Anyway, it's fun to see what different eyes pick up as photo worthy. I enjoyed the show too. It was my first time to Longwood Gardens. Did you see the seller's tent next to the big room? I went there first, because Andy's Orchids was in there. Literally no elbow room, but good to see some of these orchids in person. In the main room, I ended up looking specifically for the vendors I knew about already: Oak Hill, Parkside, and some others I can't think of off the top of my head. But I ended up spending all my money at Oak Hill and Andy's. I agree that some of the sellers were trying to take advantage of the people who didn't really know what they were doing and didn't really know what was a good price for what they were getting. But it was worse at the Philadelphia Flower Show (granted, it's not an orchid show) where all you could really get were phal hybrids, dend hybrids, paph hybrids, and catt hybrids. Nothing wrong with any of these, but not really my focus. And if you didn't comparison shop, you could easily end up paying way way too much. So I enjoyed the chance to see the more unusual stuff for sale, in person. Like multiple vendors offering Aerangis fastuosa and Angraecum didieri, for example. Excellent. I have to say, I was more than a little amused to see that I walked out with four orchids, only one in bloom with minute orange flowers, and all four able to fit into one little plastic bag, compared to the people walking out with huge flowering purchases spilling out over large bags. I almost felt I didn't really buy anything. My wallet could tell you differently, though. (Ha.) Thanks for sharing your album!

Hi Bob, Hmmm... I don't remember seeing you... but I was pretty busy looking at the orchids! hahaha. I really enjoyed the Fest. I started growing orchids a year and a half ago and have gone this season to all the shows I could find in the area. I think this was my favorite so far simply because it seemed like both Parkside Orchids and the vendors in the tent were selling orchids at much more reasonable prices. My husband and I also enjoyed the Longwood Gardens show earlier this year. I'm sure we'll run into each other at some show in the future! I don't know of any other shows in the NY/NJ/PA area until next year. Do you know of any others? Thanks! Deb

Let me preface this by saying the picture quality below is really, really bad. Unfortunately, they're all I've got with me! I should also say that I know I'm slightly late to the party. We started dismantling yesterday and I couldn't bear the thought of taking everything down w/o getting some pics first. We actually had two trees, one real and one artificial. The real tree was so dried out by yesterday it was...well, let's just say it wasn't ready for it's close up. Anyway... Here's the street-facing artificial tree (as you can see we can't fit a star/angel/ribbon on top). At first I was upset about that, but the starlessness has kind of grown on me. And here's a gratuitous shot of my favorite flowers in the world - tulips. I was absolutely delighted to see them back in the grocery store right before we hosted our family Christmas Party on the day after Christmas. So, I splurged and paid supermarket prices for them - and they were worth it! This is the flower arrangement a very sweet friend of the family brought me. I love it. I've been in denial about getting rid of it because it's so damn pretty. And a close up of our mantel. Pretty self explanatory. Thanks for indulging me :)

maackia - agreed, in spite of our climate limitations compared to say, northern California or the PNW LOL - I feel lucky to be in an area where there is a lot of advanced horticulture going on. You have to get better and better at looking for it though. The nursery scene here is a shadow of its former self. Styer's in the late 1990s, had an online list which blew my mind for its selection. (my brother moved to the Philly area in the mid 1990s for his first post college job, so that's when I started making trips up there) When Urban Outfitters took them over, the focus moved to frou frou housewares and annuals. They still have the odd interesting perennials or shrubs but it's no longer a destination for me. I'll sometimes go there if I happen to be in the area. The once celebrated and huge Waterloo nursery went under...a result of foolishly expanding just before the housing bubble burst. But for example I finally joined the Philly chapter of the ARS because they are the only chapter, to my knowledge, that is promoting and producing grafted plants. Which is a good idea. All rhododendron plants produced by the Hachmann nursery in Germany, for example, are grafted these days. Yes, Longwood is like 'horticultural Disney'. But as I've posted elsewhere, this is actually a good thing in terms of getting the general public impressed by or interested in plants. I'm amazed when I see large families visiting...the admission must get steep even with the kids discount. And the amusing to me phenomena of how many young couples are there. I joked on another forum that many a "Sow Philly" Italian fathers must have told their sons: "third or fourth date, if you really like a girl, take her to Longwood." Chanticleer in the place for people who already love gardens and plants. I actually know a couple in the Bay Area who say it is the most charming garden they've ever visited! And that is saying something.
