Hi,

A friend took in a litter of feral kittens, after 5 months of taming them, one is sickly, turns out FELV +, is eventually euthanized. Another is sickly too, though at this point the other 4 are negative for FELV. The others are being treated holistically (she wasn't specific) and her vet has Interferon on order. She has also found limited info on Immunoregulin? and LCTI? She asked if I'd had any experience with these. I haven't, and today I didn't have time to do any research.

How 'bout you? Any experience? If you prefer to answer by e-mail, please do so, I should get it.

Thanks for any insight you might have. Most of the FELV kitties we get here are too far gone for alot of chemo. Good nutrition, TLC, antibiotics and steriods when necessary..... ANYTHING that might help the next one we get is always a plus.

Hi Sarah.

Like lots of things in medicine how a patient responds to a particular drug is unique to them. Advil may work for you but Celebrex is my best friend!

I've used Immunoregulan since about 1992. Once the dilution of the drug is made it is cheaper than dirt to dispense and very easy to use. There's two ways to use it for the kitties, IV or by mouth. We were very disappointed with the results of the IV application.

We haven't kept statistics but approximately 75% of the cats who got the Interferon by mouth survived and did well for 2 to 5 years. One cat, a handsome grey fellow, lived for 14 years FeLV + !

There was a very detailed article in the early 1990 in JAVMA about the protocol for it. I can e mail you the details of which Immunoregulan we have used and how we did things. Pretty much we did what was in that journal except we'd tell the people using it that the recommendation is to stop the use after X number of weeks. The kitties that lived the longest never stopped using the Roferon but were down to using it once or twice weekly forever.

If you can't find that journal issue lemme know and I'll e mail you later. I don't have the exact dosing particulars in my brain cell.

how about Nepeta (catmint)? Cultural Notes: Nepeta is one of those plants that thrives on neglect. Too much fertilizer will only make it grow lots of flimsy foliage. A lean soil and somewhat dry growing conditions will encourage both flowers and scent. Many of the newer varieties of nepeta are sterile, producing no viable seeds. This is a plus if you donÂt like the weedy, self-seeding habit of older nepeta varieties, but it means you will need to either buy plants or make plants from divisions or cuttings. Maintenance: Most Nepetas will rebloom if sheared back after their initial flowering. Some wonÂt provide much of a second show, but their foliage will be refreshed and tidied by the shearing. Division is not a requirement, but if youÂd like more plants, Nepeta responds well to division in the spring.

This is how I've come to do it: Dirtys must be scraped well with a rubber spatula over the trash and then well rinsed in the disposer side and then stacked next to the clean side of the sink. The disposer side always is in use for rinsing and I don't like dirty plates rinsed over ones that are already rinsed and wating for a wash. I keep both sides clear because I like to put my dishpan in the clean non disposer side. Also I like not to have to cleanser the clean side as often. We have a porcelain sink and it's so much work to keep white. However, I can see when it's clean. A perfect situation would be a three well sink! My old boyfriend had a dish drainer on the sink at all times. I prefer just to pull out the clean racks of the dishwasher and use that. I think he didn't like to put things away because he kept using the same 6 items out of the drainer over and over. I bet he is doing it that way still. No one in the house is able to get the items rinsed and directly into the dishwasher so we end up with the pile beside the sink. The exception is my china, crystal and sterling. I use it all the time and everyone knows to just leave it on the table and let me do the rinsing and stacking, etc. I put cheap washcloths between the plates and have never chipped one yet. If you have a set of silver flatware, please enjoy it. Regular use keeps away the tarnish and the pieces get more luster with each use. Just remember, no lemon dishsoap!

Howdie everyone. To my defense I am a very inquisitive person. I am now and have always been the one asking How Why When ect...I am not one to simply kick the tires and call it a day. No way...I am the one taking the car to the drag strip to test it LOL! Even as a child I was the one taking things apart to find out how they work and some may call me nosey...I am ok with that. I ask the questions no one wants to ask and I notice things other people don't. Having said that I knew I had a bad gut feeling about Ilya's client. I will not go into details about them but lets just say I know enough to know that any transaction with these people will not be easy. So my realtor gave us the facts and covered every possible scenario and in the end Ed said our best option was to go with our plan of countering with $81,000. It showed that we were willing to be flexable but on the same token it shows that were also need to walk away with the funds to buy our next home. He reminded us of our homes true value as well as how much we need to move on. We simpy cannot go as low as $75. So we made the counter offer and asked for a response by Friday. BUT...... WE also got another offer!!!! No it wasn't either of the 2 who claimed they were going to write offers. Nope it was the young couple who came thru Monday evening!! They were approved for $80,000 and offered $80,000!! They have been out and about looking for some time now so they are ready to settle when they came upon our home. So Frank and I are going to see what Ilya's reaction will be. We do not want to cut ties with him because you just never know. But we are most likely going to just accept the second offer since it will give us the extra funds to buy the fence (it always comes down to the fence with me LOL-I guess having lived in a row home for over 20 years I really want my own defined space LOL!!) Now Ed knows this second couples realtor really well and said he feels the 2 of them will be able to make this work out for both them and us as well. Sadly Ed told us since this whole transaction will be with FHA it is not likely any settlement will happen quickly. It may take up to 45 days so I wont be in my new house for July 4th. The good news is Frank and I have vacations scheduled for the last week of July and the first week of August!! We pick those weeks every year. So there ya have it. 2 offers is so much better than one!! Cheers! Susie

Oops. I was thinkin' of Interferon (Roferon) rather than the Immunoregulan. Sorry.

I've used the Interferon for the FeLV + kitties with fairly good success. I've only used the Immunoregulan for Parvo puppies.

We've used it in the puppies who were the most critical with near zero WBCs. So far, only one has not responded, and she was a 2 month old Rott. :-(

We did use it once for a Doberman who was on chemotherapy and her WBC plummeted. Within a very short time the WBC was back up. :-)

I don't know if you do chemotherapies but you can probably contact the Veterinary Cancer Society 619.474.8929 and ask them for information about immuno-therapies.

Thanks again for the info. Currently our patients needing chemo get referred to U of MN. Unfortunately the distance makes that less than ideal for our clients when their pets need them to be close (I used to work in the ICU at U of MN CVM, nothing is like being close to home). Hoping we can change this in the future.

We refer our patients to either one of two oncologists who are located about 45 minutes to an hour away from us (each in a different direction) or if they want to make the trip then to Columbus and The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine.

They get their initial evaluation and either continue having their treatments with the oncologist or I do it if the people rather not travel so much. I review all the bloodwork and patient's condition with the oncologist as well as the protocol to follow prior to giving the medications. The oncologists in Ohio are *wonderful*! I don't do the radiation therapy or radioactive tx. for feline hyperthyroidism.

The Veterinary Cancer Society would have the information you want about all the Immunoregulan and other protocols or the folks at the Veterinary Internal Medicine Board. I've e mailed the Internal Medicine people quite a few times as well as my friends at the Vet. Cancer Society.

Then they'll come up with something new and better tomorrow!
