Neither plant has a label. I identified them by looking at photos online. Both are the bright pink phalaenopsis. Both had no buds when I got them over a year ago. One I cut down per information I saw online about getting it them to bloom. The other, I did not cut down. The one I didn't cut down is the one that keeps growing and growing and always has new buds. The other one has not bloomed. I've repotted both and changed the orchid bark on the non blooming plant recently. What is interesting to me is that I have read to get it to bloom to place it in a dark cool area. I have also read to place it in a cooler area in bright light. Both plants are in front of a window (kind of cold) and in bright light. Should I try moving it into a dark area for awhile? Interesting how the one that I didn't follow the directions on is the one that is blooming beautifully.

Thanks Kevin! Seeing as I repotted this Phal a month ago, is it too risky to transfer it into a really small pot? I have a feeling the plant would be disturbed even if I simply transplant (medium included) into a smaller pot. But I'm not the expert here. When I originally repotted, I ended up putting it back into the same pot (just with new medium), which, after reading your post, may be too big for the roots (it's a 4.5 inch diameter pot that's also 4.5 inches deep). See my link below for a photo (btw, I had just watered it moments before). Also, if I transfer, would I need to repot sooner than one year from now (assuming roots grow)? My gut says it's pretty risky to repot again so soon, but, then again, you point out the risk of keeping it in the big pot. Hmmmmm..... Thanks for the fertilizer tip. Unless I was misreading the posts, it seemed like the issue was not about obtaining a rebloom on hardpruned type II's but even any significant first bloom. In particular, both BorS and flowerfan, who live in warmer but rather mild zones, reported insignificant flowering on these vines that were hardpruned. And the OP as well, who should have had at least a initial bloom flush. As stated, I tend to hard prune most of my clems - at least those that need annual pruning. And while I sometimes don't get a rebloom on my hard pruned type II's, I always get a pretty impressive if slightly delayed initial bloom season from these vines. Why this procedure doesn't offer similar results to others in similar climates is a bit of mystery to me and I have no good answers. FWIW, my wholesale nursery cuts back their potted clematis on a fairly routine basis, just for management purposes (if you've ever seen an entire growing field of 1000's of tangled and intertwined clematis vines, you'd understand :-)). Almost without exception the type II's will rebloom and even some of the type I's - type III's are a given. So I'm not sure if establishment or maturity of the vine plays a large role. It must be climate and summer warmth that ripens the new growth rapidly but that just makes the previous results from several posters even more confusing.

Thank you for your comments. The reasons why I'm asking are: a) Remember Mom's leggy plant I air layered, pruned, and turned into 5 plants? Only the two original terminal braches bloomed (twice). The main trunk grew 7 branches but did not bloom at all this entire year. The two cental portions also branched but never bloomed. b) I have several 8 month olds that are finally developing lower branching. I need to prune the central branch but don't want to retard possible nearing blooms. Your responses tell me this is a very good time to prune. c) Because all (60 obesums / 14 arabicums) but Mom's 5 are seedlings, I am potting up every few months at age 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. I've decided to leave the older ones in 6" pots at least until they bloom. Of course, the arabicums will need to be up-potted in accordance to their growth. That I can see, there has been no adverse effect to the periodic repotting of these seedlings. My little adenium garden is in full sun and receives weekly, sometimes twice weekly watering, depending on sun intensity / dryness of soil. Also, I fertilize weekly at 1/4 strength, alternating between 20-20-20 and 6-18-6. Thanks again for your help.
