We visited our lake house today (long)

Neil and I were out riding around and we decided to see if

my gate opener button for our old lake house still worked.

As we approached the gate I noticed that there was a

beautiful new fence with copper tops on the posts. A new

sign and some new paving.

It was looking good.

We drove around the lake to our old house and everything

looked pretty much the same except the azaleas were much

larger.

I drove down the driveway and, (Whoa Nellie) the Oak leaf

Hydrangeas were towering over my head and in full bloom.

I walked up the walkway and rang the doorbell but no answer.

We walked around to the back of the house and was blown

away by my former gardens. Every one of the Hydrangeas were

in full bloom and they had grown so much. The ones by the

porch were mixed colors of purple, red, pink, lavender, and

blue. The blue ones in the woods were a cobalt blue and

took my breath away when I saw them.

The Monarda was glowing red and I saw hummers hovering

nearby. I had planted 3 Red Hot Poker plants a couple of

years before I left and they had multiplied and were in

full bloom across from the pond. My Burgundy leafed Red Bud

trees had grown so much and were so pretty.

The Hemlock trees we had planted now tower at least 30 feet

and I remembered how I used to agonize every summer if I

had watered them enough. Little Chelsea's marker is still

where we buried her in the flower garden by the garage.

The dogwood trees must have died but the 3 hydrangeas I

planted were growing and blooming, 2 were pink and 1 blue.

They were blue when I planted them. There were Coral Bells,

Indian Pinks, everything I had planted still there and

still blooming.

Our house looked the same as when we left it. Shoot, the

wreath and rug that I left for the new owners was still on

the front porch.

The yard and everything was well kept except I always had

flowers on both sides of the walkway leading to the front

door and the wrought iron planter on the front wall of the

house had flowers in it when I lived there. The walkway and

the planter was bare.

I remembered that last year the new owner had planted

Begonias by the walkway. I cringed when I saw them because

I knew the sun would fry them and leave an ugly mess. I

guess she gave up.

I'm glad I went back because when we

bought the house there wasn't anything growing in the yard

and now it is a lush, beautiful garden that would make any

one proud. It looks just the way I imagined it would look

and it was worth all the hard back breaking work and money

I put into it.

Boy! what great memories we have connected with that house.

It made me feel good to see that the owners are keeping

things pretty much the same. I know in my heart that they

surely love the house, the lake, and most of all, the

beautiful gardens.
