Other people get flowers from admirers

I have a mystery package of flooring on my back porch. Ed and I are the only one with keys to the gate, which stays locked day and night... except when it was unlocked on Monday of this week while both Ed and the handyman were there. When I talked with the handyman he wanted to let me know he'd left quarter round on the covered porch so that he could do trim work today. And I said, only quarter round? Yep that was all he'd left. So I emailed Ed the other day asking him if he had leftover from his new house and he said it wasn't his. Younger sis's husband often does things like this, but he'll announce in a proud way how he's done it (it's cute, not obnoxious). He hasn't called or said anything and when I called sis today, she knew nothing. Not like her hubby. So I have mystery flooring.

Any of you feel sorry that I have ceilings and floors left, drive up here and deposit it on my back porch after climbing over the gate with it under your arm (you'd have to be super strong)?! It's just killing me no one knows anything. So I'm just saying I have an admirer. :)

My father once bought my mother a vacuum cleaner for her birthday.

We all laid low til the dust settled...

(betcha, when all the dust settles at your house, that it turns out the handyman had forgotten he put that flooring there.)

I have had some pretty weird things given me by 'secret admirers'. Most of which were appreciated and you'd understand if you knew the stories behind them.

An envelope with four hundred dollars in it taped to my fridge, by an ex-husband. Just because he was moved to. Just so happened I was running very short that month, due to some car and appliance problems. It was a Godsend.

A head of cabbage.

An engine overhaul on my old Chrysler New Yorker.

A stuffed baby alligator. I was really put off by that one. Hideous.

Another of my ex husbands got me a twenty two rifle and a garbage can for Christmas. Actually I was thrilled with the rifle and don't remember what I ever did with it. He ran out and put a bunch of cans on a fence, thinking he'd end up showing me how to shoot. roflmao. I grew into adulthood with a twenty two tucked under my pits. I plinked every one of the cans. He said something like even a pig in a poke and went off in a huff. I think I gave him the garbage can when I kicked him out.

It doesn't always have to be flowers, LOL.

There's a lot in favor of being eccentric. I have a book somewhere that was written about eccentric people being happier and healthier. Some wild stories. Toomuch glass you are an artist though and that's why people want to know how you do it. Occassionally I have plants that are show stoppers. One day some women were on my lawn having their picture taken in frontof my crown imperials! Turned out that they used to live here. I wish I'd gotten their address cuz since then I've found a bunch of old orphan photos in the attic of the garage. So far no one's asked about my junk. Oh well. kathy

Gwynne, I don't know if I had RA's here last year or not, being that I was new to butterflies and didn't know one from another until later in the summer. I did have one here this year but haven't seen it here for a good month, maybe even two. I have what I think is false nettle coming up in places but didn't notice any eggs. Of course, I didn't go looking through all of the plants either. I've never seen a Mourning Cloak here either. I've never really had much luck with trying to attract any of those rotting-fruit butterflies, i.e. MC, QM, EC, HE...I saw the RA on it a few times. I have real good luck attracting blowflies and yellowjackets though. I get a lot of Tiger Swallowtails here too. I'd love to know where they're laying their eggs. We live next to a big woods, so it would be a real challenge to try to find where they're coming from. I also get pretty many Great Spangled Fritillaries, but I don't have as many as I did last year. Of course, I have lots of Monarchs. I have yet to see any Viceroys at all. There are lots of different butterflies that I'd like to be able to get at my place, but I guess that will be up to them. Barb, for looking and for your comments! Jim, for several years I've had the ground orchid, Bletilla striata, growing mostly in the shade with just a little dappled sunlight. I seem to remember that it took a couple of years for it to bloom after planting. So probably yours just needs to get established to bloom. The only 'problem' it seems to have is emerging so early in the year, about Feb. as I recall, that frosts tend to nip the tops of the foliage if I don't get out there and cover it. This doesn't leave it looking so good the rest of the year, but you probably won't have that problem in your zone, since it hasn't happened in the warmer winters we've had here the last couple of years. I did a little research just now and found that the variety pictured above is Spathoglottis plicata. I'm excited about it because several links say it blooms throughout the year while the beautiful Bletilla striata pictured below blooms only in the spring. However, since I divided the clump into about ten plants I'm pretty sure it won't bloom again this year and just might not bloom next year either. As mentioned above Spathoglottis plicata was purchased at Home Depot. I read online this morning that someone had gotten it at Lowes on 2007. I've never had this happen to me, but if it did I would be too busy verifying my information, because I'd want to be sure that I was correct in my identification. Perhaps some people feel it's a blow to their ego to be questioned because they consider themselves experts. One of my passions is acquiring antique Chinese porcelain, and it took me a good while to be fairly certainly that I hadn't bought a fake, never mind what dynasty it was from, eating humble pie all the way. Some of the people I interacted with were renowned experts in their field, and I wasn't about to question their knowledge. To react negatively in the way that you describe tells me that this person is more concerned about looking like an "expert" rather than definitely nailing down the correct name. The real expert won't let his personal feelings interfere with his quest of finding out the truth. That's really the only thing that should matter, but I suppose it's easy to get carried away when you're already invested in a rose being a certain one. It's a human failing, and most of us have probably fallen prey to it at one time or another. I'd rather not admit it, but I have, more than once.

Sylvia, good to see you. I bet he did too, and is wondering where is that flooring I bought for Mrs. so-so? I'll ask him again, when he's standing in front of me and the flooring.

Suzy, A head of cabbage. Oh my. I bet you made some good soup with that. I'll take anything as long as it's heartfelt, it's just the mystery that I am curious about. But mostly, I would like to have seen the person get it on the porch if the gate was locked. That would've been a sight.
