Whoops- didn't plant that! Spawned from the compost!

This is my second message today so sorry for that, but now that I've found this site (specifically this area), I just want to keep talking. :)

One of my favorite parts about composting (we started last year because somebody said that a lot of water is wasted washing veggie and fruit bits down the disposal) is what will accidentally begin to grow from it. It does make things a tad confusing, though- should I pull this weed, or is it some tasty vegtable? lol

Anyway... last year and this year we've grown potatos from old ones, flax seed (which was a big mystery plant last year because the flowers had no scent), pumpkin plants (which are taking up space in my herb pots on the deck), and some other pumkin-like plant that I can't identify. Teehe.

yeah, I have the same problem... tomatillos (and tomatoes) growing up everywhere, squashes of SEVERAL varieties. I used to let them grow, but I have so little room I don't anymore, I just throw them back in the compost. :o).

I have had cherry tomatoes in the same spot since 05. Although the fruit is smaller than the ones I start from seed every year they are the most tasty. I believe it grows for a reason (good or bad). Space is an issue with me.
Watermelons grow every year in my walkway. 5 boys having contests every year on the porch. The watermelons bloom beautiful flowers and green but I have never been given fruit from them. So if you have time and space let it grow and at the least it makes great conversation.

Bobbi, if they are actual pumpkins that's great. But, I want to add a note of caution to allowing cucurbit volunteers to run wild in gardens. Plants of the species Cucurbita pepo include most pumpkins, acorn squash, summer squash, and zucchini. And, they cross! One year the neighbor grew squash . . . pumpkins . . . something! The same tractor tills his garden and mine each Spring. A huge number of vines have shown up as volunteers. He allowed volunteers to produce fruit and mature into something that he then had no use for in the kitchen - so they weren't harvested. I believe that they are a yellow squash crossed with a pumpkin but look rather like a gourd. They'll make fruit even if the vines are in compacted soil and only make 12 inches or so of growth. This is about the 3rd or 4th year that they have been scattered around both gardens . . . . I'm witnessing the creation of a self-inflicted weed. Steve

A couple of years ago a few pieces of sedum fell between the rocks on the edges of my stream, they took root and have since spread to anywhere there is a trickle of water from the waterfalls - there's no dirt there, the liner extends several feet past the edge of the stream. I would have thought it would rot since it typically likes it dry. I like the way it softens the rocks.

I'm still having a love/not so much relationship with daylilies. A visit to the daylily forums always sucks me back in! This fall I am going to try spreading them out among the other garden plants to see if that works better. I want to do something different with that prominent, mostly daylily-filled bed. Angelonea: I'm not a huge fan of the flowers, and they cost a lot when they are not available in 6-pac. Some didn't thrive. But then, just a few of them grew really well and are still blooming after months of show. So, do I grow them again or forget it? I can't decide! Anigozanthos/Kangaroo Paw: 1st year they sit there. ok. Year #2 they throw up a few flower stalks. Not bad. Year #3 they put on an amazing show that lasts for months and thrills the hummingbirds. Fabulous/show stopping! They don't return for year 4. To make them work in the garden, I have to add some new plants every year. Sometimes I discover well after the fact that the tags have been switched. The cultivars I like are vastly outnumbered by the ones that hold no interest. Whether 'paws are in favor depends upon if I won that year's expensive gamble. Dahlias. Hmmm I haven't grown them since we lived in the snail/slug house. ;-) I have been thinking about planting a few here...those photos makes me want to even more.

I have a tuberosa that is looking healthy,but I want a bigger clump so I'm getting a second one.I'm going plant it next to the one in the ground and mix in lots of sand and a little compost.I had a tuberosa growing in sand years ago and it was thriving,but I moved it into more of a clay soil and it went downhill from there. I think the seeds would germinate better in Sandy soil also.You know you can grow a lot of natives you desire if you ammend the planting hole and a small surrounding area to meat the soil requirements of the particular plant.Just because the soil in your area is clay doesn't mean you can't grow plants that require sand or lots of organic matter or acidic or alkaline conditions.Just ammend the planting area.Oh and I just found out my variegated Solomon's seal isn't native.It's a Eurasian species, polygonatum odoratum.There are closely related native species like smooth Solomon's seal ,Solomon's plume and false Solomon's seal.I would like to grow some of these in rounded clumps as an alternative to hostas.Trying to go totally native and I'm learning a lot as I discover which plants in my yard are native and which are invaders.The native plants evolved with the native wildlife to give the fauna everything they need.Non-natives rob wildlife.Dug up my name's rocket,purple loosestrife and a dianthus and added them to the compost today.It's a great feeling plus I have a lot of just bought,beautiful natives to replace them and nourish the wildlife.

LOL, it's crazy. This is my first batch of compost, and I've got tomatoes and pumpkins coming up everywhere. I had added a lot of pumpkins/gourds and green tomatoes to the pile and guess they weren't cooked enough.

This year's plan: I'm going to make a soup out of the pumpkin innards and any green tomatoes I put in the pile. All going into the food processor until it's liquid. Then I'll pour it on the pile. That'll teach em.

I'm leaving a few things to grow to see what crazy things I get. just for fun.

Anything that springs up in the garden that I did not plant myself this year, I tear it up and use it as mulch.

I have tomatoes, several kinds of squash, and a very prolific watermelon growing from the compost I put on the vegetable patch. I thinned some, kept others, and only had to buy a couple of pepper plants this year! I'm actually thinking of doing my vegetable garden this way every year from now on, the surprises are kinda fun.

You know, I always transplant one wild tomato in a sunny spot where I have amended the soil into gardener's gold.

I always read that wild tomatoes are risky. "You don't know what you'll get or might not taste good" is what I always read.

What a load of bunk. Those wild tomato plants grow great and the fruit tastes as good as any of the plants I start from seed. Been this way for over 20 years. I'm still waiting for that "lousy" wild tomato plant to emerge!

Yet, like an idiot, I still grow most of my tomatoes from seed! I guess I just like growing plants from seed. LOL!!

The only thing that didn't grow in my compost pile attempts was the BMW my husband had towed and carefully placed in that spot behind the barn....
