Saturday's Musin'

We had about 7 inches of rain in the past 72 hours, with more promised this evening and tomorrow, and in the form of thunderstorms. Weather people got excited yesterday, but luckily little if any damage was done. Mostly it was flash floods. It looks like we are entering our summer weather pattern.

This is the first Saturday since soccer season began that I have had free, and didn't make any other plans. I want to get the kayaks out on the river, but the rain and storms have made it iffy. There is still standing water in the yard and it's enough to float a kayak, but not to do much else.

I went down to my favourite seafood shoppe and picked up crab legs and shrimp for lunch. I have become a fan of steaming both crab and shrimp as I find it almost fool proof in not overcooking them. Seems the flavour is more delicate when they are cooked that way, too.

Afterward, I decided I wanted to make a Key Lime Pie. I road my bicycle down to the grocery store to pick up the ingredients for such that was needed. The store is not exactly cosmopolitan so there were no Key limes to be had. So I decided to commit heresy and use Persian limes, the kind commonly found in all grocery stores. I committed even more egregious heresy by buying the bottled lime juice. So, technically, I am making a Persian Lime Pie.

Does that exonerate me from being excommunicated from the cooking guild?

Now that soccer is mostly over until August I may once again regain my loquaciousness.

Almost the same. Free today even though it's coatch-(can't do endash Michelle) pitch baseball, because of the rain, and free next Saturday (good, since next is gradauation, and he'll attend, which is really really good (graduation walk is only for HIM to realize graduating is ultracool)). Some house projects finished for remodeling, all grocery shopping done for the month, laundry for the week, one test for which I'll study, and all while cleaning the house. Menus left and wardrobe for the week left to get ironed. I got new brakes (Miata) today; I figured $500-$600 and it was $585 and change (close enough). Bought and ate scallops, mmmm, (really supposed to be a shrimp dish. It's a traditionally Spanish (truly... not pseudo Spanish- (again, no endash) Mexican) tapas. It's so easy and really every mouthful is oh my gosh delicious. I also decided to make a dessert. And chose my lace cookies which always turns out to be java almond brickle. I give. I'll call it that and be done. But this time.... it wouldn't fit, so I had to eat enough to close the container. And since school is over, I'll be back around. Almost the same. Almost. But yours is better. I am just glad I can focus on the "last half of busy" that I complained was too hard before (thanks guys for shoving), as I "only" have to remodel the house and sell it (I'd draw an incredibly wry smile if I knew how).

Did what every tried and true Kentuckian does on the first Friday and Saturday in May. When you can't go, then you watch the Oaks and the Derby on TV.
Having no Olympics this year, that was the prolonged TV viewing for 2009.

My mom has three children. Whom does she call when she is ultra-sick? Me. She knows I speak "medical", know the ins and outs of hospitals, and so she takes me along. Saturday, she called me to ask "if I could do a favor and come over to her house". I have to drive 35 minutes just to get there, so it's not really a favor, but a call for help. When I get there, she's not certain what she should do, but I am. She's the worst I've seen her bar none and I have to tell her, "I didn't drive from west Nashville just to look at you (I would've seen her the next day at church) get in the car! We're going to the ER". She's still in hospital. Her white count is high and it hasn't fallen yet. Ugh. She's thanked me a blue million times for bringing her and she certainly looks and feels better. Glad I made her get in the car. Love that silly lady! All I wanted to do was relax at the park and make a meatloaf. That was my weekend goal. At least I was free to do it. :)

Woke up to breakfast in bed this morning. Last night was homemade merguez sausages (lamb, curry, cumin, etc), and kale with cannellini beans. Oh, and we got called over to the neighbors for an impromptu concert on the new piano they got the kids. I taught the youngest the baseline to "Heart an Soul" (it's one of the very few songs I remember) and she spent the better part of the day getting it right. The kids are hilarious/smart and total hams, so it was pretty amusing. Your seafood sounds good, Michael. As does what I assume to be your summer off! Between boating, gardening and such, I bet you find an outlet for your energy... maybe you won't even require an insane amount of ibuprofen when you're finished. Thursday through Saturday was unbearable as usual. Our village promotes village-wide garage sales, and it seemed there was one at every sixth house. I've got nothing against garage sales, but imagine ten times the normal amount of traffic in your neighborhood, trucks pulling trailers making inexplicable U-turns, nobody obeying stop signs, and cars making stops for no good reason... I'm happy to see it end every year. Today is rainy and chilly, so I don't get to play outside, but here are two pics I took yesterday, and one I took a couple weeks ago. So good to see you! I am so glad to see you getting out and about, enjoying everyone and everything you're seeing and experiencing. Lovely. Spent Saturday with a friend who was visiting from Port Charlotte, Florida. She hasn't been since this time last year. The leaves were blazing and the weather was effervescent. We went to the Molasses and Music festival. Held at the Ag center. It also is the place the Metro Police horses are corralled. It's a place to see all the animals, plants, quilts, honey, geology, and insects of the area. There was an Appaloosa Leopard Mule; LF said he looked like a dalmation. We met, petted, got slobbered on by, and sat on the oldest and the newest police horse, Peace Keeper and Edge, respectively. These Walking horses are always donated to the police force. Rode on a wagon pulled by a mule team led by a skinner. Found out what a skinner was. eek! LF tried bobbing for apples above ground. Strings are tied to a tree with a skewer and apple is attached. No hands! It ended with fried pies, peach, cherry, and apple. There must've been two or three roaring wood fires. It smelled like autumn and felt like camping. Then we went to the zoo where the lorikeets whizzed past our heads, whooshing from one of the cage to the other. It was nice to see the lumbering giants after that. It was the first time in a long time that I came in cooler weather, so it was odd not to see them getting into their pool. Loads of walking, walking, and more walking. Much of it uphill. :) The conversation was great, the sights were wonderful, and the LF and I both collapsed on the couch at the end of a very long, physically tiring day. We didn't even eat dinner. We were on the couch in our jammies by 5:30PM. I thought I did well since I was just in the ER 3 1/2 weeks ago with my back. I did have to sit an awful lot all day long, but I made it! On Saturday mowed and mowed and mowed and mowed, with the pushmower -- the grass was so high that the rider wouldn't cut it. That's what can happen when there's a week of rain following a week of 90Â° days. The temps during this past week have hovered in the low fifties, a good thing because I don't like mowing in sultry heat.

The rain came back Saturday afternoon (the backyard was mowed inbetwixt dashes of precipitation) and continued in mist and downpours over Sunday. Still raining out, with the meteorologists stuck on repeat: rain expected today, tomorrow, and the next day and the next day and the next day....

Sunday was a sleepy day with naught more than naps and a bit of baking. A loaf of raisin bread, a batch of onion rolls for lunches, a batch of regular sandwich buns --- I've been making lazy-chicken-salad sandwiches, and those are tasty on the regular bun.

I've been mulling over and trying to figure out a sauce: a fruit/bourbon/BBQ for marinating and grilling seafood made by a friend who *never* shares recipes, sigh. It was fantastic coating skewered shrimp and scallops on the habachi. I could tastes the peach and a nip of the bourbon with just a background of BBQ flavor. D'ya suppose the BBQ sauce is made with peaches instead of tomatoes?

The calendar says May, the weather says April, the hibachi says NOW!
