Thanks Much! My Dad in World War 1, three brothers in World War 11, one brother in Vietnam, six brothers total in the Armed Service. One brother was a Marine who served in the Pacific area. Thank God they all came home! I am proud to be an American!

Thanks for the quotes. Seems we all get touched by the current unrest of each of our times. We can hope for the day when they are no longer required. I brought up a post on the gallery side I did last year of military in my family. Do you have some to add? Also a new poster has asked for a plant ID in the gallery.

Most of these tips, I do them on a daily basis. I love the banana peels tip for the roses too! I'm going to start on it. Here's my tips. Find something to laugh each day. It'd turn your white hair back to dark & erase wrinkles from your face ;o) Most of all, it'd add years to your life! Flue & cold season is around. If, unfortunately, you get it, stop taking daily vitamins except for vitamins C. Daily vitamins & minerals will strengthen your cold or flue. On the other hand, during the illness, take at least 1000 mg of vitamin C to ease the symptoms. Reduce the dosage to daily recommended dosage as you get over it. Sweet corn here is from Florida and it was not bad at 20 cents an ear. I put an ear in the microwave. It was 95f here yesterday, 91F the day before and we had a three day yard sale thursday, Friday and Saturday, so no cooking then either. I didn't cook one darned thing this weekend except pancakes for Bud and Makayla, who spent the weekend. Other than that we ate ice cream and cold sandwiches and the kids ran through the sprinkler while I planted artichokes and tomatoes and took a break every five minutes to stand in the sprinkler! I have two flats of tomatoes at the farm, that's 96 plants, a mix of Rutgers and Bonny Best. Here in my raised beds at the house I've limited myself to two of each variety I planted except the white tomatoes. I planted two Cherokee Purple, although they never do particularly well. Also two Pineapple, two Big Rainbow, two Golden Jubilee, two SunGold, two Mortgage lifter and a dozen of the as yet unidentified "white" tomato. Mother saved seeds from last year, I bought a container of tomato plants from the 4H kids last year that were simply labelled "white". They were one of the best tomatoes I've ever eaten, so this year I have a dozen plants, LOL. I think they may be White Queen or something similar, a beefsteak type tomato. I started two dozen artichokes inside about March, no one I know in Michigan has ever grown artichokes successfully so of course I have to try. I don't have air conditioning and the pool isn't quite clean yet, so it was way too hot to cook, even outside. Too hot to eat too. Annie

Here is the recipe you requested, Shaun. A friend from work gave the recipe to me. Pineapple Coconut Self Frosting Cake 1 8.75-oz can crushed pineapple in syrup 1/3 cup shortening 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 egg 1 1/4 cup all purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup flaked coconut 1/3 cup brown sugar 1/3 cup pecans 3 tablespoon margarine or butter (melted) Thoroughly drain pineapple, reserving 1/2 cup of the syrup. Beat together shortening, sugar and vanilla. When creamy, beat in egg. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with reserved syrup, beating after each addition. Spread 1/2 of batter in greased and floured 8" round or square cake pan. Try to evenly layer with crushed pineapple. Cover with remaining batter. In small bowl, combine coconut, brown sugar, pecans, and butter. Try to sprinkle evenly over batter. Bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes. Nice to serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Granlan, that is the way we feel about my father who died in 1960. My husband died two years ago and it comforts me to visit his grave which is in his home town. It is in Lindsborg, Ks and is called Little Sweden. I visit places we went together and have lunch at the Ole Stuga. I also put flowers on his family's graves for his sister who lives out of state.

Thanks for the quotes. No matter what happens in the world the American flag has been displayed at our house every single memorial day. I'm grateful for the Americans, including the president, that came to our rescue in Europe in WW11. There is no telling what this world would be like if the NATZIES had conquered the world.
Now we have other radical elements to fight.

There is nothing wrong with an enjoyable extended weekend with spring doing its last hurrahs and summer looming around the corner. I do hope, however, that we never ever come to call days like this a bank holiday. It was the common people who let their own blood for this day. Farmers who put down their hoes, paperboys who traded in their caps for helmets, fathers, brothers and sons and also daughters, wives and sisters.

I made my rounds to the cemetery plots to lay flowers and revive memories and more than a few of my family gravestones were adorned with the flags of veterans. My father's footstone records service in three wars from foxholes in Europe to the DMZ in Vietnam and many points between. My Uncle, his brother, who died in Normandy. A cousin who served in Vietnam, and died shortly after his return, a broken man. Two 2nd great grandfathers, both of whom were prisoners of war in the War between the States. A grandfather who served in Europe in WWI. I can go all the way back to the first line of my family to have come to this country.....Quakers who took up weapons against their own beliefs to fight in the Revolution. A great Uncle who survived the Spanish American War and volunteered to serve in the Phillipine Rebellion and died there, but his stone sits on an empty grave in the local cemetery.

Yes, it's a day in our family we always remember respectfully.
