Do Any Of You Have Plans For Memorial Day?

I think we do. It will be the postponed Mother's Day / Birthday get together we were supposed to have. Amber got sick so we didn't have it. Now, providing they don't have her on jury duty she plans to have it. She will probably find out on Monday evening if she has to go for jury duty.

I hope the weather will be nice for it as they plan to cook out. It has rained so much it will probably rain that day.

I will drive to the small town where my husband is buried and put flowers on. I have to many trips coming up to celebrate a holiday. LOL

Sue: After reading your latest post about your husband never doing things for you on Vday or your birthday, I just had to post about what my then husband did one year. All the guys he worked with were talking about what they were getting their wives for Vday, and when he said "nothing", they started in on him. They embarrassed him so much that on Vday, he brought me a box of chocolate covered cherries. He went to work and very proudly told the guys. He should have just shut his mouth but he had to 'brag' that the candy did double-duty as it was also for my birthday on the 15th. They razzed him for a long time over his cheapness. It was the ONLY time though that he ever got me anything for either day. Ahem, do you think that might be part of the reason he's my ex? lol Shirley

Nowhere, the roads are full with cottagers. I was planning on buying a 1/2 bushel of roma tomatoes that are on sale this week. I buy a full bushel each year, and give a bunch to Mom. So I'm planning on a 1/2 bushel for this year. The sale started yesterday, and the store didn't have them. There was a sign on the door saying that there's an extreme shortage of them. We went this morning first thing to 2 stores, neither had any. I asked the manager at the second store and he checked, and they aren't expecting any in till Tuesday! There goes my Holiday Monday plans. It's extremely hot and muggy yesterday and today, and supposed to cool down to 20 degrees on Monday which is when I was wanting to make sauces and roasted tomato soup. Darn! I always give my step-father cartons of the soup for his birthday each year and he loves it.

I work New Year's Eve and day, double time pay. Yeah!! In fact, I went through about half the year's schedule for 2008 and signed up to work every holiday and will finish once my last week of leave is approved. New Year's eve we are having a little "party" at work, basically eating chili and finger foods. I've never gone out for New Year's Eve, ever. When I was growing up we always had whole crab on New Year's day and stayed up till midnight the night before watching Dick Clark. Is he even doing it his show this year?

I am THE planner of the family. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Birthdays, etc., all planned and hosted by me. I made a firm decision a few years ago though, one supported by my own mom, I have NOTHING to do with the mothers day plans. That is the one and only day that I simply pass the buck. I arrived at this decision on my second mothers day of being a mom. My family and I showed up at my parents house on Mother's day. Mom had spent all morning making a nice lunch for us, I had spent the better part of the day before making a nice dessert. My older brother had to be rushed to the ER due to a ruptured gallbladder. As we sat around eating dinner and waiting for updates from the ER I looked at my mom and said, "isn't this mothers day?!?!? Why did WE do all the planning and preparation?!?" So, to answer your question, I truly have no idea. It might be a Sunday like any other or we might be surprised with a gourmet meal....I just don't know. The only thing I know is, it is one of the only holiday get togethers that I DON'T (correction...WON'T) have to plan for or worry about. It will either be an awesome day planned entirely by my husband, dad and brother or it will be like any other Sunday.

I've never visited graves or the cemetary on this holiday, or any other time. I can pay honor to my loved ones any time and any place, but that's just me.

On the other hand, I've always wanted to join the bikers in Red River, NM where they show up by the dozens for Memorial Day weekend. Even at my age, I could still enjoy their company/enthusiam. :)

Waaaaay up here in Canada we don't have Memorial Day, we have Victoria Day, in honor of Queen Victoria back when we were under the rule of Britian. There are big parades and other events that commemorate her.When I lived in Victoria, on Vancouver Island, we took part in the day's celebrations as it was an all day and city wide party. Up here it's the first big camping weekend.
As I don't camp anymore, I will likely hang around home and sort stuff for the outdoor market Sunday - if the weather is good as it says it's supposed to be, I'll go marketing Sunday and don't have a whole heckofalot else planned.

The plan is to get the garage ready for a garage sale which we'll have at the end of the month. Then spend the week marking and organizing. I've been getting rid of my larger items on Craigslist... so this will be a smaller sale than what we usually have.

We always go south but since we are retired we can go anytime. Don't really know what we will do. It may depend on what the kids want to do..

We have a church picnic planned at the park my husbands works at. It's a small county park along the river...Very nice park and usually nice people that go there.

We will be going to the cemeteries to decorate...

And that is our Anniversary week end..well the 28th...but we were married on a Memorial weekend....43 years ago.

No plans, but I may hint around to my husband's brother's wife that we have no plans. Maybe they'll invite us over. They have the absolute BEST barbecues.

Granlan, that is the way we feel about my father who died in 1960. My husband died two years ago and it comforts me to visit his grave which is in his home town. It is in Lindsborg, Ks and is called Little Sweden. I visit places we went together and have lunch at the Ole Stuga. I also put flowers on his family's graves for his sister who lives out of state.

Sydneys graduation is friday night and then having a party for her the next day so that is our big plans...can't figure out why they are having grad. memorial weekend....stacy

Well, no camping, since it usually rains, thunders etc on that weekend, and the way things are going this year, we probably will have snow. Freeze warnings again tonight, and yes snow flurries a few days ago. No the trees and lilace are still wearing their winter coats--along with everyone else. 41, windy and cold again

I work on Saturday and Monday I will also work. Our town is have a "Home & Garden" event so we will be downtown with some of our roses talking with everyone who shows up!

I never thought I'd have my daughter's ashes in my home; that sure changes the way I deal with it all.
