Black Rot solutions

Hey! I have these yummy concord grapes that are developing "Black Rot" on them I think. Today I removed all the infected leaves I could find and sprayed with copper soap that i was told is organic (and I hope it is). Is there aything else I ought to do or another way I should approach this that might be better or different ideas? Also, can this disease spread to non-grapes?

Black rot of grape is pretty picky about what it will infect and that is mostly the grapes. Control starts with good cleanup of infected leaves as well as fruit. Copper sprays applied before bloom might help.

There's a reason organic tree fruit is expensive. Many fruit trees are quite susceptible to a number of fungal and insect infestations, and orchardists spray a lot of chemicals to counteract that. There are organic chemicals available, which may be effective for your problem and may not be. Without spraying, the only way I am aware of to get fully organic fruit is to encase each baby fruit in its own mesh bag early in the springtime just after the fruit becomes visible on the tree. Even that's not foolproof. I'm sure you will also hear from others with more experience on this topic, which is a good thing as I am not currently familiar with all the varieties of chemical sprays being used. Proper timing of the sprays is also important as it's more about prevention than curing a problem once it's manifested.

Wow, what a mess someone left you with. There is a video on youtube of a grower shaving off all of the infected area of a canker down to clean wood and allowing the area to dry before painting over the bare wood with 50\50 white interior paint and water to seal it. I don't know if that's the ideal way to handle canker or not. Just relaying the video. I think your tree may also be a good candidate for cleaning off all of the side growth and leaving that one central leader, if it looks like it could produce viable growth. You would want to wait till late winter to do such major surgery. I don't think you can do wrong with regards to finding branch collars. Just whack those suckers off as best you can. The trunk will never be beautiful but I happen to like the gnarled look myself.

Thank you both for the info! I have never sprayed grapes before, this is new to me. I have 3 seedless grape vines climb on a big gazebo (photo1), and 1 seeded grape vine climb on a small gagezo(photo2), I can't reach a lot of the grapes on the big gazebo roof (15-16' tall), birds eat most of the seedless grapes on top, I shared seedless grapes which I could reach and seeded ones (birds won't eat those) with neighbors and their grandkids every year until last year the black rot showed up. The seeded grape vine has less damage than the seedless ones for some reason. I will spray all of them in the spring. The only way I can collect mummies is to cut the vines down. I am thinking about planting rambler roses to cover the top and keep the grapes within reach up to 8' tall. If I cut down the vines to the ground this fall, will I get any grapes next year? Thanks I just read the Smal Fruits and Grape Spray Guide, it listed sulfur for black rod. I have 40lb sulfur, I use sulfur mix with dish soap for Powdery Mildew and black spots on roses! :-) Have anyone tried with sulfur spray for black rot?

Black rot is the Achilles heel of organic growers. There are some new products out there like double nickel and regalia but they're ag use only as far as I know.

How in the heck did you get black rot in San Diego??? are you overhead watering? I am not saying it's impossible to get a fungus in the desert... I just thought that black rot was not common in most of the dry areas of California.

It's quite humid here. Maybe not so much as - say - Iowa, NYC, or Florida but it's been kinda humid in the mornings - misty.

On the other hand it mightnotbe black rot but that is sure what it looks like from looking through pix of grape diseases.

Thanks you guys and thanks for the link to the info on the disease. I didn't know about it at the time of blossom set so I didn't spray until it became apparanteafter friotset. The fruit looks ok.

Oh! :o) I am sitting here in Sacramento where in the summer the humidity USUALLY ranges from 10% to sometimes 30%. I guess it's hard to imagine So. Cal as humid. It's been more humid here than usual this year, so I'd better keep an eye out for that sort of thing too I guess. Thank you!

Call the Master Gardeners at your county's office of the Univ of CA Extension Service. They'll know if the disease is in your area.

The way I am growing my grapes on a fence, seems to open up the branches for more air....I was hoping it would help. I did see some show on that, where the growers were pruning for more air circulation, but that was I think in Napa or Sonoma, clower to the coast from me, but maybe doing something like that would help you too?

As the grapes start to ripen, there are a few grapes already drying up. Can I pick the grapes and let them ripen off the vine or will they all just rot like they did on the vine last year?
