What am I? Need help identifying this plant starting to flower...

Hello!

My husband and I bought our first house last summer and this strange plant has been growing in the front bed in a nice shady location. We're getting ready to do some big xeriscaping plans and i'm not sure whether this is something I need to fight, keep, or worry about. I came across poison hemlock...but it doesn't have the fern like leaves, nor are they very shiny. I also seem to remember pulling it out with my bare hands last summer (not very smart) and it smelled like anise! It had a mild case of PM and I dealt with some stubborn roots at the end of last summer.

-It's getting ready to flower again, and I recall that it produces white blooms for awhile.

-The stems are quite sturdy and dark purple/burgundy in color.

-The leaves are dull, smooth, and smell like anise when crushed.

I am stumped and I would appreciate any help! Thank you :)

-Lisa
