I'm new to the garden thing

Just wanted to introduce myself, I have never had a flower bed or well I have never tried to grow anything in my life I was never interested in it until this year.

My grandmother who always had flowers past away last May and it seems like ever since then I've have picked up the urge to want to grow flowers and veggies and things like that which I thought was strange. I did not want to go buy plants either I wanted to have seeds and wanted to watch them grow which I have done, I have tons and tons of little green sprigs all in my flower beds so if they actually bloom I will have tons of flowers. I also have tomatoes growing and several kinds of peppers....I'm actually kinda proud of myself....

Gardening is a lot of work but worth it.
Your grandmother's influence is taking hold.

I think seeing those seeds sprout is way up on the list of joys of gardening, possibly ahead of a hot shower soothing aching muscles.

Seriously, it sounds like you've gotten a good beginning. Borrow from the library or buy a used copy of "Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew to learn the easiest way to have good veggies. Plants have definite requirements for food and water, and what they like, weeds like better. MB explains how to have the most good plants with the fewest weeds. Another good basic book is Lasagna Gardening by Patricia Lanza, because she explains the simplicity of making good soil, which makes for healthy plants.

Meanwhile, keep us up to date on how everything is doing. In this forum, we do more chatting than gardening so we would love to hear more about you.

Fuji's are self-fertile and will fruit just fine without another pollinator. We have many isolated trees in town that are loaded each year. Sounds like you have a semi-dwarf like M7. The roots won't bother your house or your sidewalk. Take your pick on the sun, but the more, the better- you need at least 6 hours a day for it to fruit. Be forewarned that Fuji takes at least 5 years to start fruiting, even on dwarf rootstock. However, once it starts fruiting it is quite reliable. You are wise to get two trees, as the apples are outstanding and much better than in the store. It takes a long time to ripen, 180 days and will color up (if you can call it that) long before the flavor peaks. Be patient and leave them on the tree as long as you can. Warning: apple growing is addicitive, so start looking for more room around your yard for more trees. Applenut Southern California

Neighbors Honeysuckle is taking over.

I agree with the previous poster, "sowngrown". We've owned our home for a few short years, and initially thought the honeysuckle growing along the fence in the backyard was charming. HA!!! What a nightmare that stuff has turned out to be. It is our neighbor's honeysuckle...so we're in the same situation. The stuff has actually formed good-sized TRUNKS, which have grown through the chainlink fencing that separates our yard from our neighbor's yard. Repeated applications of RoundUp and removal of those horrible runners are the only things that have been effective. And the runners can be longer than 8 feet, btw. I started pulling one up in our backyard recently...and I kept pulling... and pulling. That runner actually ended in our neighbor's yard, and was at least 20 feet in length. I can't plant anything along our back fence at this point, because the honeysuckle has formed tightly packed root mats that I can't dig into. If I had to do it all over again, I'd pay for professional removal. Good Luck.

Mulches are materials that are layed onto the soils surface where over time the Soil Food Web will work on digesting them, but will not start and utilize all the available soil Nitrogen as they would if that same material were to be worked (tilled) into the soil. Tilled into soil raw organic matter can cause the Soil Food Web to get busy to digest that stuff and in doing that they will, temporarily, use most all of the available Nitrogen depriving growing plants of any.

A number of things: 1) No need to remove sod, so that will save a ton of work. The newspaper, mulch etc will kill the grass and the dead grass adds humus to the soil. 2) If planning to plant, do not use landscape fabric. Fabric is designed to be used under decks, patio stones and walkways where it will not be cut into for planting. Here's how to do it. Use a garden hose to outline the bed. A curvy line looks best, likely a lazy L or C shaped bed will look good. A square bed or rectangular bed with straight sides does not look as nice. Move the hose around and rearrange until you get the shape you like. Now spray paint along the hose and remove it. Use an edger to cut the grass along the paint line, wiggle back and forth to create a v-shaped line. Cut the grass inside the future bed very short. Save your newspapers for a month or get old ones from the corner stone (they cut off the date to return to supplier and throw out the rest). Arrange to have a truck load of composted manure and another load of wood chips delivered. On bed creating day, get a few friends, some beer and munchies then proceed: One or two people place four to five sheets of newspaper over an area of future bed, folding paper to match the curve of the edge. Another person follows with the hose and wets the newspaper. The rest shovel manure and then woodchips over the newspaper, wood chips should be about 2" deep. After all is done, drink beer, eat munchies. If you don't object to chemicals, a faster way is to spray the grass inside the spray paint line with Round up, wait two weeks, respray any grass that is still green, wait another week. Then, one day have the truck load of manure dumped on the bed, rake to shape. Next day, have the truck load of wood chips dumped on the bed, rake to shape. If any weeds pop up over the summer, pull them out when small. You can plant into the mix after about six weeks or wait until next year. While waiting, draw a plan of the bed on graph paper and plan what to plant where. If full sun with sandy, dry soil rethink using iris, they need moisture. Adding organic matter is good, but you cannot change the fundamental nature of your soil. So unless you want to spenda lot of time watering, research plants that like sunny, dry conditions and use them. Depending on the size of the bed, you could consider some small shrubs like Potentilia (under 3ft with yellow flowers all summer).

Welcome to the party! Where in Texas do you live? We're getting way into spring here & the larkspur & poppies that I let self-seed last year are getting tall & starting to put on buds.

And now is the time to be getting your summer vegetable garden in. Around here we need to have it in the ground by about April 1st.

if you are new to the garden you may want to check your seed packets (you probably saved them) and find out if your plants are annual or perennial or biennial.

If they are annual and most vegetables, they will bloom the first year, but don't be disappointed if they are perennial and or biennial and they don't bloom the first year..some of them take at least 2 years to bloom from seed..and biennials will die after they bloom, but they make tons of seeds so you can replant those and get blooms every 2 years from them. For blooms of those every year, plant seeds every year for a few years, and then you'll have them blooming every year..I have done that with mine, esp the hollyhocks bloom every year for me now, but some of mine still only bloom every other year..still need to get seeds to put in in the inbetween years for those..

Well I had a little help from my sister who has always loved growing flowers and so I have seeds there are easy to grow like cosmos,zinnas, and marigolds...and Andie I actually used to live about an hour from just on the other side of Athens but now I'm down by Houston and yes I started my seeds indoors around the first of Feb and we put them in the beds I guess about 2 weeks ago it never did get really really cold here only about a couple of weeks where it got to freezing....I have some pictures of my little green sprigs but just not sure how to post them

Green, Just throw out those flower seeds & scratch them into the dirt right now. They'll be popping up really fast. DH is currently finishing the new raised beds for our vegetable garden here & we'll be putting the tomatoes & peppers into it this weekend.

Spring has certainly sprung here. Our Azalea Tails start this weekend & yesterday when I was cruising about I noticed that the wisteria (pretty, but an absolute menace down here) was starting to bloom. The dogwoods are out in force and just look like they are white clouds floating in the woods.

well can't help you too much with Tx as I'm on the other side of the co and top..Michigan..but I'm sure you'll have fun..getting started is the first step, and then of course it is hard to stop..i'm an addict
