HID set up and recommendation

I am currently looking at purchasing a MH 1000W light and I have a few questions.

I am planning on mounting this on a shelving unit, is this a common set up? Typically, what is the minimum distance from the tops of plants (cats and dens)?

The shelving unit is 4'x18", it is not in front of a window. I am looking for a light with a more compact reflection downward and it seems most HID reflector claim a much wider lighted area, 6'x6' etc. Is this too much wasted light for me?

Does anyone have product recommendation? Is 1000W too much intensity for a shelving unit where the maximum distance from the top of plant would be 18" or so. Do you have another recommendation?

How much heat will this light throw out and what is the best way to manage it? Also - what are the advantages of the digital ballast, are they recommended? Is MH good enough or do you recommend a switchable ballast?

I don't mind making the investment but I want to make sure I get the right type of lighting to fit my set up.

Thanks for your help?
