W.O.C. Photos!!

Hi all, well after taking the day off from work to go blow some of my mortgage on plants, i have also decided to post my photos of the displays on Shutterfly. WOW..um okay..a bit of a sensory overload!!! I'm going to have nightmares tonight about the phal-tree eating me alive!

Just joking! those are great pictures - it's almost like being there myself. Must be an awesome atmosphere! I can't even think about it - it's too depressing! haha :D

Whitecat, In keeping with the title of this thread, I killed my first three phals and most of an oncidium--then I received a phal as a gift, and for 3 years it refused to die, grew and bloomed despite neglect--then I decided I should learn more about orchids, and take better care of it...needless to say I nearly killed it, over fertilized I think, burned the roots right off, three pairs of leaves got all limp and wrinkled I kept it that way for about 6 months before I got the nerve to repot (from tight sphagnum moss to a bark mix) would you believe it perked right up, two months later the leaves are firm and upright, there are several new roots and two spikes that are about 6-8 inches long... Now I have 20 orchids scattered around my living room, half are phals, one phrag, three onc, 2 catts, a vanda, a paph a zygo and a tolumnia. I've rebloomed most of the phals and the phrag, most of the others I've had less than a year, so we'll have to wait and see. I'm putting together an order for some seedlings from Byrd's... nick

I don't know that there are seeds of Lee's luxurians or Stewart's luxurians. The form I am (trying to) grow is from seeds of the species, bought from someone in Australia, and if I lose this one there are plenty to re-start. I think one of the two chance seedlings was sold to you, remember how disappointed you were in the look? Well, it's been a long time. I am growing in Jiffy Mix now. I don't know how Lee's and Stewart's differ, probably don't have the thin leaves or maybe fewer of them and thicker.

Thank you, thank you, thank you all so much for your helpful suggestions! I hope I can cover all the questions/etc.! Here goes: Buehl - thanks for embedding the pics, I realized when I checked just now I forgot to put the IMG tags in *duh*. I will get it down! Your kitchen is gorgeous! The pic of your pantry along with Bmorepanic's suggestion has got me thinking about doing an angled pantry there instead...the only downside to having fridge and wall oven on the wall with the brick is that it makes the bane of our existence (backend of fp) even "bigger". IÂll have to get some cardboardÂ..the more I think about it, the more I like the ideaÂ. I've got dimensions at home, I'll post them tonight if I can; We do have a DR, so I see the banquette being snacks/homework/crafts/laptop. I'll check those dims when I get home as well; DH and I talked about prep zone - we are both right-handed, and constantly fight for prep area to the left of the sink! We tend to cook "mise en place" style, prepping to the left of the sink and then placing prep items by the cooktop, which is currently on the opposite wall next to the hallway door (no counter space to the rt of cktop) so I think the way we have that laid out should work for us; Thought about putting wall oven where cooktop is, and we even put up a cardboard template to try it out - cut off tons of light, though, and made kitchen feel cramped :( Unfortunately, even if we saved more $$, just what we're planning now really tops out what we want to spend on the kitchen. The budget is more about keeping the overall reno costs in line with what the house warrants more than actually $ (which is still a big concern!) Judydel, thanks for your ideas and pics, as well, love that layout! We currently have a peninsula that is perpendicular to the brick wall - giving us all of 30" to walk through - BIG bottleneck!! It's one of the reasons we're yanking it out - I don't want to yank out the fireplace, but we need to open that up some. I considered putting my cooktop there, though - b/c I love exactly the idea you state - being able to watch your kids while doing something in the kitchen part... Bmorepanic - great points: I'd love to have a drawer cabinet under the cooktop - but my cooktop is 36", and we are going with KM cabs, and can you believe they don't have a 39" drawer unit?? I called them directly, and the person I talked to said 36" was widest available. Maybe I should check again.... Great point on the fridge - I think we're covered b/c we can easily turn around, take one step, and get to the counter from there. We'll def be getting a full-depth cab over it as you suggested, though You're right on the "z" cabs as well- I think that's just what my software plugged in, it will just be a triangular cab, to ease the entry from the hallway We actually thought about vanity cabs for the banquette wall - will have to think about them for the fridge wall. GW has to be the only place on earth where a mark of true craftsmanship is seen as a liability. And get five score of enthusiastic folks to cheer the complaint along, each blithely free of understanding what they are actually looking at. You should be happy that they took the time to fill it in the best way possible. It is evidence exacting, fine craftsmanship. You see, the void or knot (or civil war bullet!) that used to be where the dutchman is would have only been exposed after the top was glued up and then surfaced. It was probably not visible before thicknessing, which happens after glue-up. The only way to fix this _without making the top thinner_ was to do what they did. It is magnificent craftsmanship, and is exactly the same approach taken by every fine cabinet or furniture shop in the past under the same circumstances. To remove/replace one board will necessitate repeating the thicknessing process, and the top will end up thinner. They can't cut the top apart and not subsequently resurface the whole thing. Then, who is to say that the next round of thicknessing won't expose another set of issues? Even the clearest board can have hidden inclusions lurking below the surface. You are dealing with solid wood, not glass or injection-molded plastic. Accept the limitations of the material, will you? You have to be willing to trust that an artisan of this caliber did not purposely insert a bad board just to hurt your feelings. Casey

You know, it is kind of weird. I am not a Phal. Person. I really like vandaceous varieties. However, the Thai growers really REALLY impressed me with the amazing array of colors, sizes, textures, & patterns! I am thinking about going back on Sunday for the "blow out sales" to see if I can get a good deal on a plant or two!

Snasxs, anything you see in the displays is for sale at the vendorÂs booth. I saw the Phrag. Kovachii & decided I had to have one, so I visited the booth where they had hundreds of plants ranging in sizes & prices (flasked, seedling, nearly blooming size, blooming size, & with blooms. All with outrageous prices to match the outrageous beauty of the flower.)

That Phal. Scherilli tree was amazing! everyone was snapping pictures left & right!

ARGH! The Vandas!!!!! If I ever took my firstborn to a place like that, he/she would be in serious danger of being traded off for some 'chids!

OMG, I am so incredibly jealous! Those displays really are amazing, and the repetition of plants, like the Phals, the blue Vandas and the Paphs, is just breathtaking. I can well see why your mortgage would be in danger.

Sensory overload! I heard mention of flamingos wandering freely, and a geyser erupting hourly - the list of vendors was mind-boggling! While I'm in an agony of envy of people who have gone, at least my spending has a cap (in the form of a small wad of cash forced on a pal).
Very much enjoyed the photos!

hello, Ray, thanks for taking time away from the orchids to post the pictures - they were awesome!! in a way, I am glad I am not able to go: I would not have been able to excercise any restraint..

Larissa - I love how you put that - "...suddenly *NEED* to have one of those beauties!" ....I only know too well what that feeling is like! I have also had lots of 'suddenly need to have' moments. I believe it is Ctna. Quest's Milennium, btw!

Ray, thank you for tearing yourself away from the orchids long enough to post the pix. Nice treat.

When I was brand new to orchids, the annual AOS meeting was held in Minneapolis. It was my first show, and I looked at exhibits and vendors' plants so hard and so long that I got disoriented and had to go eat lunch.

WOC must be 50 times more overwhelming. Wow.

Keep your food and water intake adequate so you'll have the energy necessary to make all those difficult buying decisions. :)

Larisa, I think you are talking about the photo of Dtps. Pride Of Ben Yu 'Ben Yu'. It is beautiful! Flowers like these have converted me into a phal lover!
