Do you chop on your wood counter top?
Comments (12)I had edge grain rock maple BB in my last kitchen & I chose it again for my new kitchen, the main reason being the functionality of cutting on it. I use cutting boards for meat, but basically, I think they're a PITA & one more thing to clean. I oil my counters 1-2 times a year & I don't find that they look overly scarred or beat up; a serrated knife will chew up BB & I avoid those. I suspect that dark species of wood like walnut would tend to look faded & dry more than a light wood, but I'm guessing. IMO old cutting boards look particularily bad because of water damage caused by submerging or soaking them or putting them in the DW - all things that shouldn't be a problem with a counter top that's reasonably cared for. Of course, if you want a countertop that looks like fine furniture with an unblemished finish & exquisite grain, cutting on it would not be the way to go....See MoreKitchen with Lacanche Range and 18ft island
Comments (63)The other thing I noticed about the hood is that the filter baffles are high up in it. You should take out your hood filter periodically and clean it to prevent dangerous build up of combustible grease. Doing that task for ones at the sides of the range area where the front obstructs access by dropping low looks like it could require awkward, difficult and possibly painful contortions. Using a grill, wok and deep fryer mean that task needs to be done more often because those tasks generate more grease. The kitchen is spectacular and I could live with some of the downsides (for example, I don't mind doing some walking during cooking because my legs prefer it to long periods of standing still so I could live with having the short hike to the fridge. (I might want a basket or something to make carrying a variety of produce to the sink easier.) One can use portions of the range top that one isn't cooking on at the moment to hold items to make up for the lack of nearby heat tolerant counter. If one is using too much of the range top for that, one could put trivets or other cover on the wood to allow hot items to be there. The thing they describe as a pantry looks set up more as a mud room. The only point to the doors on the back of the fridge seems to be to allow loading in groceries unless there is some counter area that they didn't show....See MoreQuartzite Installation - ok or not?
Comments (26)This has all been said before, but I am very upset at that seam. Well, the veining matchup that is. The seam looks great, but when I worked for a fabrication shop we did not do 45 degree angles on granite. The edges are too thin and break. We would have done the 45 and went around each corner at least 3" or better yet 6" for a 90 degree seam. If this is not what you saw and what your ordered, I would make them redo it. 2 slabs is a lot of money for that stone, an exotic. Did they charge you for the entire slab or did they charge you by the square footage? That makes a lot of difference in the price you are charged and whether or not you "own" the remainder. If they charged by the square foot, the remnant belongs to the fabricator. If they charged you for the entire 2 slabs, then you own the remnants. With two slabs they should have been able to match the veining much better than we are seeing. I see people say you won't notice after you look at it for a while. Not so! It will anger you each and every time you wash dishes! I would also talk to them in person and not leave it up to emails....See MoreBacksplash behind open shelving? p.s. Is calcite OK behind sink?
Comments (60)@Beth, my tile store displays lots of Lunada Bay--I've been drooling over it for months (it was a serious contender for master bath until I gave in to a more sedate Porcelanosa). That herringbone is so alluring, I want to get a couple SF and frame it for my wall! Those colors remind me of tidepools in the late afternoon sun. Gorgeous. We're just starting to pack for the move so I think I'll plan to try out some large sample boards after I recover from the move. :) @Dixie, thanks for that visual. I'm not sure what my resistance to subway tile is all about (a resistance to ubiquitousness?). But if I went that route, I'd stack 'em vertically, as Beth has suggested. It's funny (kind of) to look back on all the things I thought I was SO sure I wanted over the past year only to change my mind shortly after!...See Moreeandhl
