Will we as a nation survive without our TV?

People are starting to really freak out about the possibility of no new TV in the new year. I guess I'll miss a couple of my favs - Supernatural and Law & Order, but my Netflix membership is up and running again. I'll be OK.

Part of me is really curious as to how low the networks are going to go with the anticipated flood of reality shows. From what I've heard, it's going to be bad. Could be kind of funny though.

We've managed to survive 7 years of that moronic, idiot, lord and emperor, immoral, unethical, poorly educated, fascist....

I'll stop.

What is no TV compared to enduring that?

I have Netflix, PBS, Joost, the internet, the Squeezebox and my iPod. Who needs TV? And no cable for the past 10 years.

But the best part, since I live in sunny Florida, an array of visiting friends to get me through the winter. I'll take them over TV any day.

Because of the nature of what I watch, I haven't really noticed the strike. And, yes, DVDs. I think even the first couple seasons of Project Runway are on DVD.

The letter I copied above, must not have been read too recently! I kept reading it and thinking--"I don't think ACORN is doing the Census since there are several controversies they are involved in that have called them in to a questionable status." Here's what I found: "The Census Director has sent a letter to the National Headquarters of ACORN notifying the group that the Census Bureau is severing all ties with the community organizing group for all work having to do with the 2010 census. "Over the last several months, through ongoing communication with our regional offices, it is clear that ACORN's affiliation with the 2010 Census promotion has caused sufficient concern in the general public, has indeed become a distraction from our mission, and may even become a discouragement to public cooperation, negatively impacting 2010 Census efforts," read a letter from Census Director Robert M. Groves to the president of ACORN. "Unfortunately, we no longer have confidence that our national partnership agreement is being effectively managed through your many local offices. For the reasons stated, we therefore have decided to terminate the partnership," the letter said. I have had Eczema, and it isn't fun. My worst itching came from allergic reactions to mosquitoes, but that was an obvious cause. My doctor said that food allergies are hard to identify, and that avoidance is the best way to find them. If I were you, I would go on a special diet of fruits and vegetables, and avoid those that are classic allergens. I could easily live on apples, oranges, grapefruit, and some other foods. I would try sweet potatoes, and some other foods that would give me the necessary nutrients for about 5 days, and I would eat those foods and no other. I would wash my sheets in a detergent that has no scent, and would rinse them about 3 times. I would avoid any dryer thing (those bother me, and cause itching.) I would try to allergy proof one room in the house and spend time there without animals. I would avoid candles and perfume - even scents in shampoo and other products. I know the itching you are describing, and it is very uncomfortable. It really is in another class besides itching because it feels like it is coming from your bones. You don't have shingles, do you? One cause of my eczema was HRT. I really wasn't allergic to it, but it was instrumental in drying my skin. I am allergic to eggs - all eggs even egg whites. I am allergic to whey, but not cheese. If I drink milk, I become a little uncomfortable sometimes, but if I eat a Stouffers meal, I become very sick. They are loaded with whey. My allergy shots have been great, but I have taken them for 25 years. I give them to myself once or twice a week, and can work outside whenever I want. I cannot mow the lawn, and must watch out for conditions where there is heavy dust. Do you take any medications at all? Have you been in touch with a regular doctor who can test you for something other than allergies, like a reaction to something the allergist might not think of (2nd opinion). My husband has bad allergies also, and got tired of the shots. He tried an allergist who relies on the blood test, and was told he had no allergies. My allergy shots work because I kept a log of what I ate, and when I felt bad. I was able to take that to the allergist, and he found what was in the air when I got sick. It took about 2 years to get it under control. I have had very bad reactions to medications, and the mosquito bites were serious. Good luck. Sammy

built-ins without the tv over the fireplace??

Oh that's so funny, we have the exact same floorplan. I was not open to putting the TV on the wall opposite the windows b/c then you'd have to put a couch in front of the windows and face away from the backyard, plus block the view. Definitely not putting a TV in front of the windows so that only leaves the fireplace wall. And the built-ins were already there and they take up every single inch of that wall -- no drywall at all. Our windows go all along the family room wall and then all along two of the three walls on the breakfast nook bump out (the third wall has a door to the pantry) and then it's all connected and open to the kitchen. With the way our built-ins are set up, there wouldn't be enough room for the tv on either side regardless. I like the room in the above link that has the TV in built-ins to the side of the fireplace and doors are covering it so you don't have to have it in view all the time. Another thought is raising the hearth of the fireplace. What gets me is the staggered look of the tv next to the fireplace, but not at the same level. Wouldn't want the TV super low so raising the fireplace would allow them to be more even. I don't know...just a thought. Overall, I'm ok with our TV being over the fireplace. If I were designing it, I would probably have done it differently. The mantle is higher than standard so our TV is higher too. I'd make the mantle lower if I could have. Then the TV could be a little lower as well.

And before that we endured 8 years of hypocracy and living large off of the previous administrations policies. Let's hope "all blow and no go'ary" doesn't make it in '08.

As far as TV, I only watch about 2-3 hours per week of the type of TV that is affected, so no big deal for me as long as sports, news and documentaries are still available. My wife on the other hand will really struggle without her weekly dose of Denny Crane.

I'm a total TV freak (watch probably 30-40 hours per week, big screen hd, DVR, home theater, 4 tv's in the house including the orchid room, etc...), just not necessarily into the sitcoms and dramas that are the usual network fare. I'm not into the movie thing, I never enjoyed going to a theater for some reason and very seldom will watch a movie on the tube. I own 1 DVD, it NL's Christmas Vacation and I watch it once a year. Gotta love Sparky and Eddie.

That's a LOT of TV, Bob!

I actually had to google what this was about. The TV I watch is commercial free on a DVD. When we actually watch 'live' TV, it's infomercials for entertainment.

Is joost open to the public, yet?

Not much I can say I guess. I'll still miss the two mentioned.

No cable here either. There are some things man was not meant to pay for. TV, water and sex are three of them.

The relationship alone, takes the "free" out of sex.

You can get Joost to send you an invite, if it's not open to the public yet. I think you just have to dig a page or two deep on their website to find the invite as opposed to "maybe" we'll send you an invite (that's what I did). Or I can send you an invite, I can't remember how that worked. There wasn't too much on there the last time I viewed something on Joost.

Dag! Just got a notice that Blockbuster is going up two bucks a month. Maybe it's time to reconsider Netflix even though I'd have less flexibility and fewer options. :(

Last summer, Netflix lowered my price by a $1 or 2 just out of the blue. Kind of nice. Maybe it's because I always rate the movies and answer their emails about when the DVD's arrived. I get really weird about things like that. I feel like someone is watching me and noticing if I don't do those things.

Depending on what plan you have, they also give you free movies to download to your PC. With my 3 at a time, I also get 17 hours/month of other stuff to view this way.

Joost is internet TV. It's maybe not quite ready for prime time, as it were, but they do have some interesting stuff available, depending on your interests. They've run new HBO shows before they were available on HBO.

I'm not quite ready to put a computer in the living room and I usually avoid my office, and computer when not working, so I don't watch too much TV/movies on the computer, yet.

Talking about HBO. Just watched two episodes of the wire. Not sure of the series number. Waiting for the good citizens of Baltimore to take out a class action. Must be millions to extracted from HBO. It cannot be all true....

Thought i would look up the murder rates of countries on google. Course i found a lot a guff from the gun lobby, but i did find some figures that might be solid. About .04 per 10000 for the USA. About .015 for Australia. Heaven alone knows for Baltimore.

Anyway, I love The Wire, the Sopranos. etc etc.

Yes, The Wire has to be just about the greatest series ever. I've been renting the DVD's and am now just finishing season 4. Most of the discs have 2-3 episodes (2-3 hours), but a couple have had 4. I didn't think I could watch one that long since my limit in front of the TV is around 2 hours. Wasn't a problem at all. The 4 hours were up before I knew it. Love, love, love that series.

Speaking of good series...I may have to dig around in the other threads to find who to blame for getting Heroes on my radar. I finally started watching it a couple weeks ago and am really enjoying it. Network TV. Who knew?

So, I should add The Wire to my Neflix queue?

If I add one more series, I'll be subscribing to Netflix for the rest of my life.

I watched the very first episode of Heroes when it first appeared. I thought it was the dumbest series ever, so I never watched another. Maybe it got better? I seem to form opinions quickly.

The Wire - Yes, yes, yes!!! I have no idea why this series didn't walk away with every award possible. In a way it kind of spoiled me. I'm having a hard time finding movies that live up to the same standards.
