I really don't believe this.

I've been asked to be a pallbearer Thurs. PM for an old friend , my age, she just didn't wake up this morning. I just did this last week for another funeral. Of course I will but this is getting to be almost too much.

It is sort of incomprehensible isn't it, Gandle? I just found out today that the mother of a friend passed away over the weekend. She was elderly but in relatively good health. It's enough to make me want to throw open my windows and scream "Enough already!" Problem is, nobody seems to be listening.

I'm very sorry about your friend, Gandle. Take comfort in knowing that she's now in some very fine company.

Woo Hoo - how fantastic is that??? Yes - he will be spoiled rotten but woe to him in a family with nothing but girls. Sisters, girl cousins, although as he gets older the girls friends will be the subject of much interest. I can sympathize. My husbands fathers family had not given birth to a girl in over 80 years so the chances of me having a girl were not very good. I owned a cross stitch shop at the time and so I hand stitched the name "Joshua Paul" on perforated paper to construct birth announcements I had designed. That's how sure I was we were having a boy. Baby came in manner called precipitous birth, meaning I had no contractions, nothing but an odd feeling of pressure. Went to my regular appointment and the midwife almost jumped off the stool when she examined me - dilated to 9 with NO PAIN. They rushed me to the hospital where the doctor was delivery another baby. The baby was born about 15 min. later with my husband barely arriving on time for the birth. The nurse says "It's a girl!" I literally sprang up to a sitting position and screamed, "WHAT????????." The nurse pulled my husband off to the side and asked if there was a problem. "No problem," he said, "she just can't believe it's a GIRL". The birth announcements went out a little late because I had to re-stitch 35 pieces with the name "Sarah Kate". It's a funny story to tell and I still have the Joshua Paul announcements, who knows maybe some day my daughter will have a boy and agree to name him that so she can use them.

Heythere Steve! Welcome! Your concerns are valid, let me tell you what I know. "First off can't you all just say where you are instead of the zone this zone that..." The reason people are using zone numbers is so they can compare plants by climate across vast distances. The zones refer to low temperatures and allow people to estimate the potential of different plants being able to live through the winter in different places. You can find your zone here. By including your zone in your profile info, people will be able to formulate "fact-based" answers to questions you may have, and be able to relate any experiences you may share to their own situation. For example, those from Seattle who read your information can benefit from it but there may be people in other parts of the country where the climate is similar and your advice could apply to them also. But unless they know what zone you are in, they don't know if your advice applies to them. The zones also allow people to buy plants with reasonable expectation of whether or not they are suitable as perennials (coming back each year.) "...the big names of plants that nobody knows" Yeah, nobody really likes it, but here's what's going on... Let's imagine you live in Chicago want to discuss daisies. You assume we are discussing Bellis perennis (english daisy.) But I live in Miami and assume we are discussing Gerbera Jamesonii (gerber daisies.) These plants have vastly different requirements (in fact, your plant would die in my yard and mine in yours) and our discussion would be pointless at best, and counterproductive at worst. Nobody is trying to show-off or talk above those who don't know the words used. Just making sure the exact plant being discussed is specified in scientific terms. We still walk around our yards talking about the "daisies." One other cool thing about latin names; when you google a latin flower name instead of "daisy" on the IMAGES page, you get lots of pictures of the plant you wanted to see, not just a hodge-podge of everything including a cartoon character.

I love the magic Blue Dolphin. A whole group of believers waiting for the magic to arrive in the garden. I have fireflies now...already....and I was very surprised by them. I hope they are not the bugs nestled in the grass during the day that my two doxie girls are nosing around and catching. Lovely memories of plentiful fireflies of a summers eve and we'd catch them in a fruit jar. Leafwatcher, save the Dream Queen and move to Colorado where you have access to the real thing.....let us know if what you see looks the same. I got a real Surprise this week. (H. 'Surprise')

I have heard it said that, internet or no, people are much more likely to talk about a bad experience than a good one. One thing about internet retailers that is different from B&M stores is that they tend to be heavily automated so that they can move a lot of product with minimal labor. That helps keep prices down and is a good thing so long as the system works the way it should, as it did for you. Some companies seem to overlook the fact that things don't always go the way they are supposed to -- things are backordered, discontinued, damaged in shipping, etc. -- and do a lousy job of providing customer service in those situations, which creates a lot of bad blood very quickly. Glad it worked out for you.

Please accept my sympathies. I lost 3 long-time friends over the past year, and I know that there is always an achy place left behind when someone goes on. It's very difficult to be grateful for having had the opportunity to know someone, when that person is no longer within reach.

It is so kind of you to help by being a pallbearer; I'm am sure the family is grateful.

Can't imagine losing 2 friends in such a short period of time. That has to be pretty rough and I'm sorry you are facing it.

I am sorry for you to have to suffer such loss again. Hopefully you can find comfort in your friend's 'leaning on your arm' as she begins a new journey.

Gandle, this must be so difficult! I am at the age where I have outlived most of my friends and acquaintances, we all have moved to different locations, so the news filters through little by little.
My village does not do a lot of formal funerals, there will be an anouncement on the door to the Post Office and in the local weekly, most of the time inviting everyone to share a celebration of the Life of the Departed - pot-luck, everybody welcome. The event generally takes place at the town's park/hall or other public place, such as the Rodeo Grounds or at Boomer's Saloon. I think it's a lovely custom.

It's hard but you must be the one the families turn to...that should give you some comfort knowing that you can help with this last service to your friend. I think Lilo's village has the right idea...I avoid funerals and mourn in my own way but it's hard no matter the way in which we must say goodbye. josh
