I think I have it:-(

For years I needed an SUV to haul animals and everything else back and forth to the lake every week. I thought we'd move up there so I basically moved the small stuff, week by week, over 6 years. We sold the house this year, yep, had to move most everything out, altho we sold it furnished, still a lot of little things.

The SUV's were great for this, and for safety's sake on a very busy highway.

I need a car now to get around town, zip to my mom's 100 miles north about every month, but I don't need a gigantic gas guzzler weighing 5750 lbs to carry me back and forth to the office and Kroger!

I love Toyotas and have enjoyed this big Sequoia, but I drove a new Lexus GS 350 the other day, OMG, worse than orchid fever, this new sickness came over me, fell in LOVE with this sports beauty! It wouldn't get the gas mileage that a Camry would(but much better than Seq) and it's about 25K more $$$ than the Camry, but that all seems insignificant when I'm daydreaming about it;-)

Of course, Robert is against me trading. He says I'll lose a bundle, but my Sequoia only has 30K miles on it, in perfect condition and I know I'll never get as much for it as I would now.

What do you guys do when car fever comes on this strongly? I remember my dad would get it about every three years and that's all that would come out of his mouth until finally there was a new car in the garage.

Judy, do you know that Lexus is the lawyer's car of choice around here? All you have to do is look at a garage full of them to realize what business is upstairs. Do you really want to have the same taste as them?

Then again, I have this thing against Camrys.... and I can never kick a car love unless it's completely beyond my budget, so if you've been behind everything in Toyota/Lexus' line up and still dream of that one, then.....

Thankfully, I've only had good dealings with lawyers, so I don't mind;-)

Besides, they do their homework, just like I did when I shifted from Chevrolet to Toyota, main reason, less trips to service dept.

Happy Patriot's Day! April 19, 1775. Have any of you read, "April Morning" (Howard Fast, I think) I ruminated on the puzzler while moving more rounds of firewood, noting the advance of spring, clipping back some brambles, and watching the line of cars pass my house. I came to the realization that the minus the first letter the remaining letters read the same forward and backward. But I lacked the presence of mind to move the first letter to end! Guess the CIA won't be calling to put me on code cracking duty any time soon. :) And spring is advancing on the Compound. I've finished getting the rounds out of the woods just in time, the ferns are beginning to send up the fronds and I'm holding out hope that not too many of them have been trampled by zealous arborists! The ferns are probably my most favorite feature, so easy, so reliable, so hardy... and they make a perfect clubhouse for kitties and curs on very hot days. The little Trout Lilies are sending up mottled leaves and the wild LOV and some other darling spring ephemerals will be up soon. I concur with Deanne that we are in dire need of rain. It's been well over a week since the last soaking and it's amazing how quickly things dry out when there are brisk winds and plants are starting to put on lots of seasonal growth. The big tree that was taken down (the one I've moved piece by piece, lol) was largely rotten and had voluntarily shed a few big branches last year. I was unsure what to do with large pieces of pretty dead wood and then it hit me: soak them in the pond and then place them in and around the old tree as "reefs" for moss colonies and possibly housing units for salamanders! My goal is the clean up the surrounding woodland areas to a moderate degree, removing piles of brush that have been started and abandonned by the spousal mess-maker so the lay of the land and natural flora can be enjoyed with relative ease. I hope my idea works, I'll definitely be out there collecting spores and mixing up a potion of moss and butter milk to pour over the soaked wood. :) BIL came over for a walk about yesterday afternoon and casually remarked that Rex doesn't run off on me nearly as much as he does the helpmeet. Hehehe, no kidding. He wondered why. I spend lots more time on basic obedience with that fool dog than does the helpmeet. And interestingly, in general I'm much more engaged with the dog when we're outdoors. I talk to him, call him over to me frequently, put him through his paces, and give him a microscopic treat as a reward. I keep a ball at my side and periodically toss it for him and then call him back to my side, before releasing him and allowing him to carry it off to Sanitary Ridge to "guard" it. Last week we had what I'm chosing to regard as a minor success. I was in the woods, the dog was in the circle watching the road. I should have insisted he was closer to me but I wasn't paying full attention (bad me!). Anyway, a neighbor walked by with her Pug. Rex got up, grew the Mohawk and barked once. I told him to stay and he looked at me for a long moment before succumbing to temptation and trotting over for an unescorted "looky-see". I waved and called to her and began walking over to collect the dog. Now, he didn't do what I'd commanded, but he DID look to me when I called to him (this is huge), AND he didn't take off at a gallop barking wildly, either. He simply sniffed the Pug gently and sniffed her offered hand. And happily followed me back into the yard when we'd finished chatting. On her return trip he remained in a down/stay in the circle while I continued working some 40' away. And there is no more explosive barking when he's in the car and sees a dog on the side of the road. At least when he's in the car with me. ;) I would definitely throw in the towel if I didn't measure success in incremental units. And lastly, lovely to see some sign of life from Deanne. Good to know the assault on your stomach has abated and you've emerged none the worse for wear. I hear ya on the dry conditions and there is vole damage here, but the extent of it is still largely unknown. I'll be thinking of you next to your driveway when I'm uncovering the back gardens. What's new in the painting world these days? And I'm delighted that Doug is finding his new job acceptable and enjoys the people. That's a big plus! Doobie under the rose is the picture of relaxation. There is nothing I like more than working around the yard and having the pride come by for a visit every so often. Even when they're "bearing gifts". The Sweet Peas are so delicate and pretty in the jaunty blue and white vases. Something on that order will really look great next to a claw footed tub in the outdoor bath area. ;) I agree that a trellis is a perfect gift. And a clematis will be the perfect way to decorate it, Michelle. Oh and I found a garter snake (about 18" long) yesterday and picked him up just for you. I am really working hard to get over that insanely foolish fear of them since none of the native species are venomous. I confess, though, I'd be hard pressed to pick up one that's pushing garden hose diameter. ;) The helpmeet is watching "Wall E" and has remarked that he bears an uncanny resemblance to his wife in his dedication to "cleaning up". I can see I'll have to watch that one later on!

I didnt come back earlier to clarify my comments and respond, bcs I wasnÂt making myself that clear, I didn't think I could do it well enough to get you to understand me, and I honestly thought it was best just to let it die. But since this has been revived, IÂll try. IÂve come off looking like a completely different kind of snob than I am. HereÂs one thing in my own life that makes me think "who you know" influences you in ways one doesnÂt think about. I didnÂt join a sorority in collegeÂit never OCCURRED to me. Why not? Bcs I didnÂt know anyone whoÂd ever been part of one. However, kids I went to school with, didÂand in fact, assumed everyone would. Bcs in their circle, it was something the grownups around them had done. So in that way, I learned that the attitudes, jobs, leisure activites, interests, hobbies, etc., are influenced by who youÂre around as a kid. I think lots of people experience something like this, and that influences why they pick a certain neighborhoodÂthey want to influence what sort of circle their kids are surrounded by. My first point is that the people mentioned who pick their neighborhood according to the income level and perceived "type of people" who live there, are approaching neighborhoods as an* aggregate.* That fact that inside a crummy neighborhood there are great people is beside the point. They're picking a neighborhood, not individuals. When I was a kid, I lived in a town w/ 3 levels of housing: crummy, medium, and rich. It was a small townÂ1,500 peopleÂso I knew the people who lived in each type of housingÂI went to school w/ their kids, delivered their paper, heard about their activities outside their homes (clubs, work, arrests, manners or lack of, spending patterns, etc.) I was a kid, so I didnÂt know ALL the details, but I knew the broad strokes of many peoplesÂ lives. The actual people that I knew who lived in the crummy housing were often (not always, but often): - badly organized (as evidenced by their front lawns, side lawns, and garages, as well as by their work history, which I knew), - not particularly visionary in terms of where they wanted to go w/ (as evidenced by their choice of profession, attention to educationÂhigh school, training, or even collegeÂwhich was known to me, bcs the people were known to me) - not particularly reliable (as evidenced by their work history and spending patterns) - more likely to have unstable personal relationships or tempers (in fact, though I mentioned stealing, I probably shouldnÂt have--the biggest reason I wouldnÂt hire someone from the crummy housing in my hometown is that most of the ones I knew anything about were unreliable, sloppy, and inconsiderateÂtheyÂd leave the paint can on the lawn, or be more likely to spill it all over the grass, or something, bcs they donÂt think itÂs a problem. And yes, the workers from the crummy housing in my home town were the ones most likely to get arrested for pilfering or stealing or fighting or driving drunkÂwe read the arrest records and conviction records in the newspaper. The ones from the non-crummy housing didnÂt have these problems.) These things existed in the medium and rich housing as well, but not as often, and not as severe. Or not as publicly, so I didnÂt notice it. I had some really good friends in the crummy housing (who were also someof the things above, but my friends nonetheless), but there were plenty of kids from the crummy housing that I avoided. (and I avoided the rich kids, too, bcs they were mean) So while on an individual basis, I was happy to be friends w/ specific kids who lived in crummy housing, I wouldnÂt have chosen to surround myself with all the families in that income level. Which is what you do when you live in a neighborhood. So I felt early on thatÂespecially at the extreme lower endÂwhere you live can often be a reflection of what you are like. The housing is not what makes someone badly organized or not visionary about their own life; but it can be the RESULT of being badly organized, not reliable, or whatever. (not must, *can*--and if you're from a crummy neighborhood and having vision about your life, you're part of proving my point--are you going to STAY in that neighborhood?) When a person picks a neighborhood, they have to take it (at first) as a whole. ThatÂs how neighborhoods are experienced. And many of us could agree that it doesnÂt take that many unpleasant people to make a neighborhood tough to live in. In the very low end of housing, the chances of getting such people increases. It was only in the crummy housing of my hometown and my college town that I EVER heard anyone yell swear wordsÂat their own 4-year-old!!!--across the lawn (I sometimes swear in certain circles, but only once have I ever sworn in public, and IÂm still mortified by itÂscreaming the F word in front of little kids and tons of adults on a subway platform is not something I admire, and I donÂt need to apologize for it; and I donÂt want my kids to spent time in the home of an adult who would do that, I donÂt care how nice their kids are, and IÂd worry about how their kids would act, esp. since those particular kids, weÂd just met). If I know about a contractor who lives in crummy housing, and I know he does great work, IÂll hire him no matter where he livesÂthatÂs treating an individual like the specific individual. But if I DONÂT know anything about him, and he lives in crummy housing, IÂm gonna be real cautious. Because IÂll be afraid that the things that put him in crummy housing, could also make him a crummy contractor. ThatÂs treating an individual like a member of a group, trueÂbut itÂs only because I donÂt know anything about him. But if someone is buying a house and picks a neighborhood because they think a certain type of people is likely to live there, thatÂs treating a group like a group. They donÂt have time to consider all the individuals as individuals. And, theyÂre NOT EVALUATING individuals; theyÂre evaluating an aggregate experience. What happens for folks Carina talked about, who want to move into ever-richer neighborhoods, is that they take this idea and apply it at all levels. Unfort., I donÂt think it works in the middle. Once you get beyond the lower levels, it stops applying. In fact, the place IÂm REALLY a snob is at the top: you might get me to live in a poorer neighborhood than IÂd like (and IÂd be extra alert to which neighbors in that neighborhood I wanted to spend any time with). But you could NOT get me to live in Chappaqua, NY, or any other highly affluent neighborhood. I hear things that happen there that are worse than any "swearing on the lawn" or "ridiculing college graduates" or even "getting arrested for stealing your arch-enemy's battery to get even." Plus, my early prejudice is that while poor kids might be less visionary and harder to live around, rich kids are MEAN. Oh, IÂve liked *some* rich kids from my home town, now that theyÂre grown up (and IÂm grown up). As for the idea that where you live might send a message to your boss, I know this to be true at the higher levels. I have an uncle who got a job as a CFO of a national company here in NYC; when he moved here to take that job, he looked very carefully at which neighborhood he picked, because he knew his business peers would too. In the middle levels of housing, and of socio-economic standing, I donÂt think these things apply. (and so I shouldn't have expressed worry about a GC who lived in a lower-middle-class neighborhood; it's the lowest-income neighborhood that would worry me) But I can understand the logic of people who think they do. I don't agree w/ them, but I understand how they get there. THAT was what I was trying to say. That my experiences at the extreme edges leads me to understand what logic they're applying to the situation. Also, not wanting to live in a certain income level doesnÂt mean you have CONTEMPT for the folks in that neighborhoodÂit just means you want to live somewhere else. IÂve probably just dug myself in deeper and made you all think IÂm much more of a snob than I am. But I tried.

Catching up here. I’m so glad Rocky is better! What a scare you had. Faron, good to see your new car, and also nice to hear others are out trying and buying new ones. Must be in the air. I have had a touch of new car fever myself. Mine usually starts with noticing new models in the road, on-line searches and research, and trying to decide what I want next. I don’t ‘need’ a new car, but am trying to resolve whether I want to get a small SUV or crossover and trade in my sedan. Hard to figure out since DH has a 4WD king cab Tacoma truck and a couple of utility trailers anyway. So we don’t really need it for hauling anything except that I can cram a lot more plants and stuff in the back of an SUV than in a trunk. Plus I think they are cool. My car is so comfy and quiet on the road, and I want to make sure I get similar in whatever I get next.

I'm sorry for everyone who lost vegetation from the winter storms. Much of that will take years to replace and grow back to what it was. I'm in Chicago, and so we could very well have another blizzard before it's all over. People are buying up gardening stock... yet everyone has in the back of their minds we could be shoveling snow one more time this season. I'm frantically finishing up indoor projects in my new home, because I will be spending the next several months digging dirt and planting in my backyard. I love to garden, and my new yard is the perfect size. I'm having a new patio installed first. But in the meantime, I'm following where the sun hits around the yard during the day, and jotting down tentative plans. Tina Marie, I'm going to pick up a few Kimberly Queens later today for hanging baskets, even though they're more upright. I'm done with messy Boston ferns.

this might help: write down any minor repair or maintainance issue that the new car might need eventually and price out the repair including labor. just the costs of a tune up can be worse than sticker shock. good luck

I don't know..I've never had it..

My Cavalier is 9 years old and gets me where I need to go. That's all any automobile can do for you. It's not your life, it really doesn't make a statement (at least in my circle of friends). It's a big hunk of metal..

However, I do plan on trading in the next couple of years to get an environmentally responsible car--some hybrid or something.

I'm with Clint, a car gets me from point A to B, as long as it has A/C, a sunroof and decent radio (but even that's now irrelevant with my iPod),I'm happy. I bought an Accord coupe new 18 years ago, I'm still driving it.

I was thinking of finally buying one of those Honda convertibles, when I sell my house and move to Florida. Cause, I admit I've been drooling over them since they first came out, but then it occurred to me, that if I ever had to evacuate because of a hurricane, it would be difficult to squeeze me, the dog, two birds and the computer in that car.

No doubt, I'll buy another Accord.

Gosh - think about all the orchid goodies and gas you could buy by getting a less expen$ive model of Toyota or Subaru or whatever. I've kept my cars over the years 8 years, 9 years and nearly 11 years. Currently have a Subaru - and plan to drive it to 200K with luck.
I agree you probably don't need an SUV, but a reasonable vehicle that lasts a long time is a long term gift to your personal finances (think of insurance and excise tax costs!) compared to a volatile thrill (that you feel right now).

How'd I do with that?

We have one car (that is Yenderme) has a car. It is a two door Hyundi hatch. I hate driving and i hate wasting money on cars. My best friend is a car nut. There is something wrong with his mind. His idea of a fun time is to visit car salesrooms, talk to those con men and collect brochures.

Sorry Guys. The rest of the world has this vision of you all driving around in a great big yank tank. Paying a pittance for petrol and wasting resources. I can see from the posts above that the vision is not entirely true.

Went to a seminar many moons ago on managing money. The first thing the Guru started on was cars and what a waste of mney they are. His advice was to drive the cheapest car that your ego could stand.

paying a pittance, for sure, it was $1.93 per gallon earlier this morning at Sam's, YAY!
At least it'll be cheap while I drive the yank tank around to find something smaller;-)

$1.93 a gallon is a pittance. Sure some people. farmers, people with lots of kids, need bigger cars.
But do you really need a prestige car delivering 150KW of power to drive around stuck in traffic. I see from reading this morning's paper that Ozone Man might be running for President. That should be interesting.

Judy, I'm sorry we aren't any fun. If I could come up with a legit reason to buy a Honda J2000, I'd be ecstatic.

Um, gas for under $2 a gallon, I never notice Sam's prices, only Costco and K-Mart. I thought I was doing good getting it for $2.35 yesterday.

I've noticed in life, we all "wear" certain things. We won't discuss what my horses have been worth.

My mom can't stand the fact I'm driving such an old car. She wanted me to trade it in when it was less than 10 years old. Once again tonight over dinner we had a "discussion" about my car.

Mom-"while you're getting rid of all this junk, you may as well take your car to the scrap yard".

Me- "why, it runs fine".

Mom- "it's leaking oil".

Me- "so what, it spits out a little oil when I start it, no biggie".

Mom- "it's leaking some fluid from the back end".

Me- "no it's not, sometimes I back into the garage, other times I pull straight in".

Mom- "it's transmission fluid coming out".

Me- "no, transmission fluid comes out of the front end and it's pink".

Mom- "it could be the axles".

Me- "no, I replaced them about 6 years ago".

Mom-" you did a nice job painting the trim on the house".

How old do you have to be before your mother quits pissing you off?

Judy, i'll apologise. There must some one here who loves cars?

My father was a car nut. He used to belong to the Hudson car club. Enormous pre war gas gusslers. He had his running one and half a dozen wrecks from which he he salvaged parts.

I was just thinking today that car salesmen are lawyers and politicians without education. Of course, when the time comes to trade in the old wreck, i'll let the dragon woman do the talking.

We tend to keep our cars for about 100,000 miles. We would buy used, but most of the time there is a great incentive (like 0% financing or 0.5% or some ridiculous thing). At present, our oldest car is a 1999 Mazda 626. I love that car. It's ruby red, with mag wheels, and a stick shift, and I get 36 mpg hwy, 28 city. Love it. I'll be really sad when it comes time to get rid of it...although I was pretty tweaked when we last had the tires rotated and the idjit who used the pneumatic wrench (I swear it was a hammer) really scratched the wheels. bummer.

I'm afraid that the way we look for cars is by going first to consumer reports, looking at mpg, cost of repairs, and what we can afford. I seriously doubt we will ever have a car especially since dh's first new car (a Lazer) was hit by a drunk driver running a red light three days after he bought it. After that, a car is just a tool to him.

jag is what started this whole thing..
at the post office, there it sat, cutest-looking little european touring vehicle I've ever seen!

But, DH says jags are for tinkerers, not his thing..
(My dad would have loved it; he and my brother could drop a transmission on Sat. morning and have that navy blue GTO ready by evening for us to circle the DQ, having a brazier burger and a dilly bar, as we lapped the square and back to the DQ, over and over again;-)

I drove the Passat earlier, another fabulous car, and salesperson did a superb job demonstrating why I should choose VW. Of course, now I'll all confused. I wish I could find a good used one, I'd save over $10K on all the $40K range models.

At least, THANK GOODNESS, Robert is now for me getting something smaller; he saw it was a no-win situation. I'll need to take him around and see how small I can go. Saab place next door to others, Ki, we'll drive one of those, too. thanks, everyone!!

I've had two friends who got Passats and hated them. They pretty much agreed the engineering wasn't very good and to fix one little thing usually required taking half the car apart. $$ Ask around more about this one before buying.

Yeah..Passats are overpriced German U-boats..

I saw this car from China called a Chery M14 that won Best at the Geneva auto show. Should cost about 15K US and probably won't be sold here until 2008 or 2009, but it's a hottie!

The car lunatic will be here soon to collect all the car bits from the papers saved for him. While i'm typing this I'm looking at that monstrosity with the fold up roof. He'd love it.

Of course since he bought his RAV4 he has done nothing but complain about the price of petrol and car depreciation.
So if you buy that thing does the value drop thousands of dollars as soon as you drive it out of the showroom?

My daughter drives a Barina. I think that is rather cute though its probably called something else in the USA.

I know it's not the fanciest but, I got a Honda Element and really LOVE it. But those Toyota FJ Cruisers are really coowlll too!gb
