New to the PNW - Where to Start?
Comments (21)emilykemily- I like to plant flowers so that there is a succession of bloom starting in early spring. For example, right now. late winter- Helleborus orientalis blooming, in shades of purple and pink, and it self-sows. Pulmonaria starting to bloom, variegated foliage, colors from white, pink, rose, cobalt blue/pink, purple/orange, needs some shade and light summer water P. 'Excalibur' Early daffodils starting Muscari Snowdrops- Galium Spring- Daffodils Species tulips- tougher than hybrid tulips, smaller blooms Muscari Hyacinths Pulmonaria Anemone nemarosa- delightful patches of low foliage and myriad blooms, goes dormant in the dry season Hardy geraniums, G. Sanguinum makes clumps that look like bouquets, some trail, low water usage Bleeding hearts Perennial forget-me-nots, Brunnera, can self sow a little, need some shade, medium water usage. Biennials, which do great here since they grow during the rainy season and bloom before things dry out for summer- Lunaria- silver dollar plant, purple or white flowers, heart-shaped leaves, makes lovely dried arrangements, self-sows Forget-me-nots, blue/pink flowers, look great initially, but can sow invasively and have to be pulled out, I tolerate them but they look bad at end of season Columbines- can be grown from seed, self-sow, cute grey-green foliage, tall double I have looks like fairyland when blooming in beds, a chore to cut all the flower spikes off later when dry. Daphne odora, where drainage is very good, shade Irises- succession of bloom from dwarf to tall bearded to Siberian and Japanese Summer- Hardy Fuchsias- tougher ones have small flowers, like 'David' F. 'Edith' with some surrounding Columbine foliage Hardy geraniums G. 'Anne Thompson' Roses- check out rose forum, rosesant forum Phygelius, Cape Fuchsia, tall almost shrubby, tubular flowers that hummingbirds like Runner beans- have red flowers that hummingbirds like, do better than regular pole beans in our cooler summers, eat when not too big as they get fibrous Heucheras- many with lovely foliage, some with nice red flowers, low to average water usage. Hypericum frondosum, kalmianum- yellow flowers, low water usage, nice fall color, shrubby Hebes- check for hardiness, smaller leaves usually, nice rounded mounding plants Hebe pinguifolia 'Sutherlandii' Daphne "Summer Ice", long bloom, nice round shrub, low water, good drainage Heathers- some bloom in winter, various seasons, low mounds, low water usage Thyme- great on slopes, low water usage, flowers, culinary Variegated Marjoram- " Oregano- " Dwarf Greek Oregano is low, some can 2-3' Rosemary- " 3-5' Dahlias- can succeed left in the ground but do better lifted. Malvaceae- edible leaves, Rose of Sharon, Hollyhocks, Hardy hibiscus, etc. Sarcococca hookeriana 'Humillis'- very fragrant flowers, I don't quite remember when it blooms Favorite ground covers- Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, esp Massachusetts Symphytum grandiflorum- Ground cover comfrey, good in dry shade, banks, under trees in orchard, tougher than grass and weeds Geranium macrorrhizum- dry shade, banks Epimedium- choice for shade Vinca- major can be very invasive, taller; minor is low, variegated forms not as invasive and can light up dry shade, low water usage. Ceanothus gloriosa 'Point Reyes'- low, spreading, low water usage, blooms Campanula poscharskyana- trailing, heart-shaped leaves, blue flowers, fills in well in shade Well, just a smattering of things that have done well for me. I use tunnels to set out tomatoes, squash and cucumber early, and grow peppers in pots. It's not warm enough for melons, basically, though some try. I've seen large Moon and Stars watermelons at Fort Vancouver. Beans usually do very well, and greens like collards and kale, which can overwinter as well as turnips for early spring greens, if planted by July 15....See MoreFailed Drug Test Question
Comments (13)We routinely give drug tests where I work. We give the kind where it is an onsite test that gives just a positive or negative but that's it and we give the type where it lists the levels of a particular drug. The higher the level usually means the more of a drug taken (both legally and illegally). When we do the tests, we always tell people to write down any prescriptions and non-prescriptions taken in the last 30 days. Not long ago we had a supplier that sent us bad tests. We were getting false positives on every one tested with a certain batch of kits. This could certainly be the case. The only way we figured it out was we sent it to the lab that will give us the level of drugs. (Don't worry - no one was fired.) With that being said, could it be that they didn't want to hire your friend and just gave that as a excuse? Also, your friend may want to ask if they could know what the levels were or if it was an on-site test....See MoreWhere to start? total newbie
Comments (3)First thing I would do is get one of those plastic stand up sinks from Home Depot or Lowes and hook it up to the plumbing. I hooked mine up each evening and detached it in the am for the construction. It was inexpensive and I still use it in my garden. The next thing is to read through the "New to Kitchens" thread that is usually on the first page of the forum. There is a huge amount of information there and it will tell you how to go about posting a layout so the folks here can help optimize your space. After that, the sky is the limit. There are people of all sorts on "kitchens", new to the process, professionals, experienced remodelers, and some talented amateurs with great vision and good listening skills....See MoreTotal kitchen remodel - where to start?
Comments (7)3) I've heard that it's a good idea to buy all one brand of appliances so the stainless steel matches. After reading lots of reviews, I'm leaning toward Whirlpool Gold. Any experiences? I'm especially concerned about the wall oven as Whirlpool is not known for ovens. No! No! No! NNNNOOOO! The same brand generally uses different factories to produce different appliances. The sheet metal will come from different suppliers. Even if the same factory with the same supplier produces two appliances in the suite you are considering it is probably a different batch therefore slightly different. The reason some people buy a suite of appliance from one brand is for a rebate. In general you are buying some good appliances and some bad appliances. One brand does not make the best appliance in each category therefore not much of a bargain. Some buy a suite of appliances to match handles, dumb reason IMO to buy from same brand. You can buy DW with integrated handle and cooktops don't have handles. It it best to buy each appliance on it's own merit; just take care you are not buying an appliance with such a unique handle or style it clashes with the rest. My recommendations A) Frigidaire SS 27" Double Oven FFET2725LS $1343 +$166 for 30" http://compare.ebay.com/like/360395237582?var=lv These are better than Whirlpool Gold and as good as any in the mid-priced category. The reason they are cheaper is Frigidaire's brutally efficient factory not cheap parts. The next signifciantly better oven is Electrolux at twice the price. B) Samsung RF263AERS 26 cu. ft. French Door $1452.55 http://www.wdcappliances.com/ProductsDetail.php?SKU=RF263AERS&cse=4 Samsung four-five years in a row JD Powers #1 French Door. C) Bosch evolution 300 series dlx $619 http://www.abesofmaine.com/item.do?item=BOSHE43P25UC&id=BOSHE43P25UC&l=FROOGLE Whirlpool Gold is a nice DW that uses a food grinder. This makes it loud. Before enzyme based detergents, you needed a food grinder.Almost all modern DW detergents are enzyme based and work well with DWers with filters. Bosch is a quiet DW with filter. Bosch has been at the top of Consumer Reports rankings and near the top of JD. JD ranks Miele #1 but that outside your price range.CR says you need to spend $500 to get a DW that does its basic function well. I say $600. That leaves room in the budget for a premium cooktop. D) BlueStar RBCT365BSS $1800-$2200 You have to get this local. It depends on local dealer. If your local dealer has a price match policy then abesofmain.com has it for $1800 with free shipping in it's area. Below is a vid about BS burner. Total $5214.55-$5780.55 What are you doing for range hood(Ventilation)? 4) For the amount of money I'd spend on a cooktop and double wall oven, I could get a really nice range. I bake and cook a LOT so the double oven is appealing, I think I may be romanticizing the idea of a double wall oven. Thoughts? Is it worth it? If you like baking in your toaster oven and think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread then you may find yourself only using one oven and the toaster oven. If you find the the toaster oven bakes uneven and dries out food you will probably turn on both ovens. I would get the double ovens. BTW Did I mention I think it is a bad idea to get all appliaces from one brand? I know someone will post they got all their appliances from one brand and they just LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! Still a bad idea IMO. You should get the best appliance for your money not just appliances that are much better than the old appliances they replaced. BTW II I will leave questions 1 and 2 to someone else. Here is a link that might be useful: BS Link...See More- 10 years agolast modified: 9 years ago
